Attendite ne justitiam vestram faciatis coram hominibus,“Pay attention, lest you perform your justice before men,ut videamini ab eis:in order to be seen by them;alioquin mercedem non habebitis apud Patrem vestrum qui in cælis est.otherwise you shall not have a reward with your Father, who is in heaven.

Cum ergo facis eleemosynam,Therefore, noli tuba canere ante te,when you give alms, sicut hypocritæ faciunt in synagogis,do not choose to sound a trumpet before you,et in vicis,as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the towns,ut honorificentur ab hominibus.so that they may be honored by men.Amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you, receperunt mercedem suam.they have received their reward.

Te autem faciente eleemosynam,But when you give alms, nesciat sinistra tua quid faciat dextera tua:do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

ut sit eleemosyna tua in abscondito,so that your almsgiving may be in secret,et Pater tuus, and your Father, qui videt in abscondito, who sees in secret, reddet tibi.will repay you.

Et cum oratis,And when you pray, non eritis sicut hypocritæ qui amant in synagogisyou should not be like the hypocrites,et in angulis platearum stantes orare, who love standing in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets to pray,ut videantur ab hominibus:so that they may be seen by men.amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you, receperunt mercedem suam.they have received their reward.

Tu autem cum oraveris,But you, when you pray, intra in cubiculum tuum, et clauso ostio, enter into your room, and having shut the door, ora Patrem tuum in abscondito:pray to your Father in secret,et Pater tuus, and your Father, qui videt in abscondito, who sees in secret, reddet tibi.will repay you.

Orantes autem,And when praying, nolite multum loqui,do not choose many words, sicut ethnici,as the pagans do.putant enim quod in multiloquio suo exaudiantur. For they think that by their excess of words they might be heeded.

Nolite ergo assimilari eis:Therefore, scit enim Pater vester,do not choose to imitate them.quid opus sit vobis,For your Father knows what your needs may be,antequam petatis eum.even before you ask him.

Sic ergo vos orabitis:Therefore, you shall pray in this way:Pater noster,Our Father, qui es in cælis, who is in heaven:sanctificetur nomen tuum.May your name be kept holy.

Adveniat regnum tuum;May your kingdom come.fiat voluntas tua,May your will be done, sicut in cæloas in heaven,et in terra.so also on earth.

Panem nostrum supersubstantialem da nobis hodie,Give us this day our life-sustaining bread.

et dimitte nobis debita nostra,And forgive us our debts, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris.as we also forgive our debtors.

Et ne nos inducas in tentationem,And lead us not into temptation.sed libera nos a malo. But free us from evil.Amen.Amen.

Si enim dimiseritis hominibus peccata eorum:For if you will forgive men their sins, dimittet et vobis Pater vester cælestis delicta vestra.your heavenly Father also will forgive you your offenses.

Si autem non dimiseritis hominibus:But if you will not forgive men,nec Pater vester dimittet vobis peccata vestra.neither will your Father forgive you your sins.

Cum autem jejunatis,And when you fast, nolite fieri sicut hypocritæ,do not choose to become gloomy, tristes.like the hypocrites.Exterminant enim facies suas,For they alter their faces,ut appareant hominibus jejunantes.so that their fasting may be apparent to men.Amen dico vobis,Amen I say to you, quia receperunt mercedem suam.that they have received their reward.

Tu autem,But as for you,cum jejunas, when you fast, unge caput tuum, anoint your headet faciem tuam lava, and wash your face,

ne videaris hominibus jejunans,so that your fasting will not be apparent to men,sed Patri tuo,but to your Father, qui est in abscondito:who is in secret.et Pater tuus,And your Father, qui videt in abscondito, who sees in secret, reddet tibi.will repay you.

Nolite thesaurizare vobis thesauros in terra:Do not choose to store up for yourselves treasures on earth:ubi ærugo, where rustet tinea demolitur:and moth consume,et ubi fures effodiunt, and where thieves break inet furantur.and steal.

Thesaurizate autem vobis thesauros in cælo,Instead, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven:ubi neque ærugo, neque tinea demolitur, where neither rust nor moth consumes,et ubi fures non effodiunt, nec furantur.and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Ubi enim est thesaurus tuus,For where your treasure is,ibi est et cor tuum.there also is your heart.

Lucerna corporis tui est oculus tuus. The lamp of your body is your eye.Si oculus tuus fuerit simplex,If your eye is wholesome, totum corpus tuum lucidum erit.your entire body will be filled with light.

Si autem oculus tuus fuerit nequam,But if your eye has been corrupted, totum corpus tuum tenebrosum erit.your entire body will be darkened.Si ergo lumen, quod in te est, tenebræ sunt:If then the light that is in you is darkness, ipsæ tenebræ quantæ erunt?how great will that darkness be!

Nemo potest duobus dominis servire:No one is able to serve two masters.aut enim unum odio habebit,For either he will have hatred for the one,et alterum diliget:and love the other, aut unum sustinebit,or he will persevere with the one,et alterum contemnet.and despise the other.Non potestis Deo servire et mammonæ.You cannot serve God and wealth.

Ideo dico vobis,And so I say to you,ne solliciti sitis animæ vestræ quid manducetis,do not be anxious about your life, as to what you will eat, neque corpori vestro quid induamini.nor about your body, as to what you will wear.Nonne anima plus est quam esca,Is not life more than food,et corpus plus quam vestimentum?and the body more than clothing?

Respicite volatilia cæli,Consider the birds of the air, quoniam non serunt, how they neither sow, neque metunt, nor reap, neque congregant in horrea:nor gather into barns,et Pater vester cælestis pascit illa.and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.Nonne vos magis pluris estis illis? Are you not of much greater value than they are?

Quis autem vestrum cogitans potest adjicere ad staturam suam cubitum unum? And which of you, by thinking, is able to add one cubit to his stature?

Et de vestimento quid solliciti estis? And as for clothing, why are you anxious?Considerate lilia agri quomodo crescunt:Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow;non laborant, neque nent.they neither work nor weave.

Dico autem vobis,But I say to you, quoniam nec Salomon in omni gloria sua coopertus est sicut unum ex istis.that not even Solomon, in all his glory, was arrayed like one of these.

Si autem fœnum agri,So if God so clothes the grass of the field, quod hodie est, which is here today,et cras in clibanum mittitur, and cast into the oven tomorrow,Deus sic vestit, how much more will he care for you, quanto magis vos modicæ fidei?O little in faith?

Nolite ergo solliciti esse, dicentes:Therefore, do not choose to be anxious,Quid manducabimus, saying: ‘What shall we eat,aut quid bibemus, and what shall we drink, aut quo operiemur?and with what shall we be clothed?’

hæc enim omnia gentes inquirunt. For the Gentiles seek all these things.Scit enim Pater vester, quia his omnibus indigetis.Yet your Father knows that you need all these things.

Quærite ergo primum regnum Dei,Therefore,et justitiam ejus:seek first the kingdom of God and his justice,et hæc omnia adjicientur vobis.and all these things shall be added to you as well.

Nolite ergo solliciti esse in crastinum. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow;Crastinus enim dies sollicitus erit sibi ipsi:for the future day will be anxious for itself.sufficit diei malitia sua.Sufficient for the day is its evil.”
