Verba Nehemiæ filii Helchiæ.The words of Nehemiah, the son of Hacaliah.Et factum est in mense Casleu,And it happened that, in the month of Chislev, anno vigesimo,in the twentieth year,et ego eram in Susis castro.I was in the capital city of Susa.

Et venit Hanani,And Hanani, unus de fratribus meis, one of my brothers, ipse et viri ex Juda:arrived,et interrogavi eos de Judæis qui remanserant,he and some men of Judah.et supererant de captivitate,And I questioned them about the Jews who had remained and were left behind from the captivity,et Jerusalem.and about Jerusalem.

Et dixerunt mihi:And they said to me:Qui remanserunt, et relicti sunt de captivitate ibi in provincia,“Those who have remained and have been left behind from the captivity,in afflictione magna sunt, et in opprobrio:there in the province, are in great affliction and in disgrace.et murus Jerusalem dissipatus est,And the wall of Jerusalem has been broken apart,et portæ ejus combustæ sunt igni.and its gates have been burned with fire.”

Cumque audissem verba hujuscemodi,And when I had heard this manner of words, sedi,I sat down,et flevi, and I weptet luxi diebus multis:and mourned for many days.jejunabam,I fastedet orabam ante faciem Dei cæli:and prayed before the face of the God of heaven.

et dixi:And I said:Quæso,“I beg you,Domine Deus cæli fortis,O Lord, magneGod of heaven, atque terribilis, strong, qui custodis pactumgreat,et misericordiam cum his qui te diligunt, and terrible,et custodiunt mandata tua:who keeps covenant and mercy with those who love you and who keep your commandments:

fiant aures tuæ auscultantes, may your ears be attentive,et oculi tui aperti, and may your eyes be open,ut audias orationem servi tui,so that you may hear the prayer of your servant, quam ego oro coram te hodie nocte et die pro filiis Israël servis tuis:which I am praying before you today, night and day, for the sons of Israel,et confiteor pro peccatis filiorum Israël,your servants. And I am confessing the sins of the sons of Israel, quibus peccaverunt tibi:which they have sinned against you.ego et domus patris mei peccavimus,We have sinned, I and my father’s house.

vanitate seducti sumus,We have been seduced by vanity.et non custodivimus mandatum tuum, et cæremonias,And we have not kept your commandments and ceremonies and judgments,et judicia quæ præcepisti Moysi famulo tuo.which you have instructed to your servant Moses.

Memento verbi quod mandasti Moysi servo tuo,Remember the word which you commanded to your servant Moses, dicens:saying:Cum transgressi fueritis,‘When you will have transgressed, ego dispergam vos in populos:I will disperse you among the nations.

et si revertamini ad me,But if you will return to me,et custodiatis præcepta mea,and keep my precepts,et faciatis ea:and do them, etiamsi abducti fueritis ad extrema cæli,even if you will have been led away to the furthest reaches of the heavens, inde congregabo vos,I will gather you from there,et reducam in locum quem elegi ut habitaret nomen meum ibi.and I will lead you back to the place that I have chosen so that my name would dwell there.’

Et ipsi servi tui,And these same are your servantset populus tuus, and your people, quos redemisti in fortitudine tua magna, whom you have redeemed by your great strengthet in manu tua valida.and by your powerful hand.

Obsecro,I beg you,Domine,O Lord, sit auris tua attendens ad orationem servi tui,may your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant,et ad orationem servorum tuorum, and to the prayer of your servants who are willing to fear your name.qui volunt timere nomen tuum:And so,et dirige servum tuum hodie, guide your servant today,et da ei misericordiam ante virum hunc.and grant to him mercy before this man.”Ego enim eram pincerna regis. For I was the cupbearer of the king.
