In die autem illo,Now on that day, lectum est in volumine Moysi, they read from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people.audiente populo:And in it,et inventum est scriptum in eo,there was found written that the Ammonites and the Moabites must not enter the church of God,quod non debeant introire Ammonites et Moabites in ecclesiam Dei usque in æternum:even for all time,

eo quod non occurrerint filiis Israël cum panebecause they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water,et aqua, and they hired Balaam against them,et conduxerint adversum eos Balaam ad maledicendum eis:to curse them.et convertit Deus noster maledictionem in benedictionem. But our God turned the curse into a blessing.

Factum est autem,Now it happened that, cum audissent legem, when they had heard the law, separaverunt omnem alienigenam ab Israël.they separated every foreigner from Israel.

Et super hoc erat Eliasib sacerdos,And Eliashib, the priest, was over this task;qui fuerat præpositus in gazophylacio domus Dei nostri, et proximus Tobiæ.he had been given charge of the treasury of the house of our God, and he was a close relative of Tobiah.

Fecit ergo sibi gazophylacium grande,Then he made for himself a large storeroom,et ibi erant ante eum reponentes munera, and in that place, there was laid before him gifts,et thus, and frankincense,et vasa, and vessels,et decimam frumenti, and the tithes of grain, wine, vini, and oil,et olei, partes Levitarum, the portions of the Levites,et cantorum, and of the singing men,et janitorum, and of the gatekeepers,et primitias sacerdotales.and the first-fruits of the priests.

In omnibus autem his non fui in Jerusalem,But during all this, I was not in Jerusalem, quia anno trigesimo secundo Artaxerxis regis Babylonis veni ad regem, because in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, the king of Babylon, I went to the king,et in fine dierum rogavi regem.and at the end of some days, I petitioned the king.

Et veni in Jerusalem,And I went to Jerusalem,et intellexi malum quod fecerat Eliasib Tobiæ,and I understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah,ut faceret ei thesaurum in vestibulis domus Dei.such that he would make him a storeroom in the vestibules of the house of God.

Et malum mihi visum est valde. And it seemed to me very evil.Et projeci vasa domus Tobiæ foras de gazophylacio:And I cast the vessels of the house of Tobiah outside of the storeroom.

præcepique et emundaverunt gazophylacia:And I gave instructions, and they cleansed again the storeroom. And I brought back,et retuli ibi vasa domus Dei,into that place, the vessels of the house of God,sacrificium, et thus.the sacrifice, and the frankincense.

Et cognovi quod partes Levitarum non fuissent datæ,And I realized that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them,et fugisset unusquisque in regionem suam de Levitis, and that each one had fled into his own region, from the Levites,et cantoribus, and from the singing men,et de his qui ministrabant:and from those who were ministering.

et egi causam adversus magistratus,And I brought the case before the magistrates,et dixi:and I said,Quare dereliquimus domum Dei?“Why have we forsaken the house of God?”et congregavi eos,And I gathered them together,et feci stare in stationibus suis.and I caused them to stand at their stations.

Et omnis Juda apportabat decimam frumenti,And all of Judah brought the tithes of the grain, and the wine, vini, et olei, in horrea.and the oil into the storehouses.

Et constituimus super horrea Selemiam sacerdotem,And we appointed over the storehouses, Shelemiah, the priest,et Sadoc scribam, and Zadok, the scribe,et Phadaiam de Levitis, and Pedaiah from the Levites,et juxta eos Hanan filium Zachur, and next to them Hanan, the son of Zaccur, filium Mathaniæ:the son of Mattaniah.quoniam fideles comprobati sunt,For they had proven to be faithful.et ipsis creditæ sunt partes fratrum suorum. And so the portions of their brothers were entrusted to them.

Memento mei,Remember me,Deus meus,O my God,pro hoc, because of this,et ne deleas miserationes meas quas feci in domo Dei mei,and may you not wipe away my acts of compassion,et in cæremoniis ejus.which I have done for the house of my God and for his ceremonies.

In diebus illis vidi in Juda calcantes torcularia in sabbato,In those days, I saw, in Judah, portantes acervos, some who were treading the presses on the Sabbath,et onerantes super asinos vinum, and who were carrying sheaves, and placing on donkeys burdens of wine,et uvas, and of grapes,et ficus, and of figs,et omne onus, and all manner of burdens,et inferentes in Jerusalem, die sabbati.and who were bringing these into Jerusalem on the day of the Sabbath.Et contestatus sum ut in die qua vendere liceret, venderent. And I contended with them, so that they would sell on a day when it was permitted to sell.

Et Tyrii habitaverunt in ea,And some Tyrians dwelt within, inferentes pisces, who were bringing fishet omnia venalia:and all kinds of items for sale.et vendebant in sabbatis filiis Juda in Jerusalem. And they were selling on the Sabbaths to the sons of Judah in Jerusalem.

Et objurgavi optimates Juda,And I put the nobles of Judah under oath,et dixi eis:and I said to them:Quæ est hæc res mala quam vos facitis,“What is this evil thing that you are doing,et profanatis diem sabbati?profaning the Sabbath day?

numquid non hæc fecerunt patres nostri,Did not our fathers do these things,et adduxit Deus noster super nos omne malum hoc,and so our God brought all this evil upon uset super civitatem hanc?and upon this city?et vos additis iracundiam super Israël violando sabbatum. And you are adding more wrath upon Israel by violating the Sabbath!”

Factum est autem,And it happened that, cum quievissent portæ Jerusalem in die sabbati, when the gates of Jerusalem had rested on the day of the Sabbath, dixi:I spoke,et clauserunt januas, and they closed the gates.et præcepi ut non aperirent eas usque post sabbatum:And I instructed that they should not open them until after the Sabbath.et de pueris meis constitui super portas,And I appointed some of my servants over the gates,ut nullus inferret onus in die sabbati.so that no one would carry in a burden on the day of the Sabbath.

Et manserunt negotiatores, et vendentes universa venalia, foris Jerusalem semel et bis.And so the merchants and those who sold all kinds of items remained just outside of Jerusalem, once and again.

Et contestatus sum eos,And I contended with them,et dixi eis:and I said to them:Quare manetis ex adverso muri? si secundo hoc feceritis,“Why are you remaining just beyond the wall? If you do this again, manum mittam in vos.I will send hands upon you.”Itaque ex tempore illo non venerunt in sabbato. And so, from that time, they no longer came on the Sabbath.

Dixi quoque Levitis ut mundarentur,I also spoke to the Levites, so that they would be cleansed,et venirent ad custodiendas portas, et sanctificandam diem sabbati:and would arrive to guard the gates and to sanctify the day of the Sabbath.et pro hoc ergo memento mei,Because of this also, O my God,Deus meus, et parce mihi secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum.remember me and spare me, in accord with the multitude of your mercies.

SedBut also in those days,et in diebus illis vidi Judæos ducentes uxores Azotidas,I saw some Jews taking wives from the Ashdodites,Ammonitidas, and the Ammonites,et Moabitidas.and the Moabites.

Et filii eorum ex media parte loquebantur azotice,And their sons spoke partly in the speech of Ashdod,et nesciebant loqui judaice, and they did not know how to speak the Jewish language,et loquebantur juxta linguam populi et populi.and they were speaking according to the language of one people or another.

Et objurgavi eos,And I put them under oath,et maledixi.and I cursed them.Et cecidi ex eis viros,And I struck some of their men,et decalvavi eos,and I shaved off their hair,et adjuravi in Deo ut non darent filias suas filiis eorum, and I made them swear to God that they would not give their daughters to their sons,et non acciperent de filiabus eorum filiis suisnor take their daughters for their sons,et sibimetipsis, nor for themselves, dicens:saying:

Numquid non in hujuscemodi re peccavit Salomon rex Israël?“Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin in this kind of thing?et certe in gentibus multis non erat rex similis ei,And certainly, among many nations, there was no king similar to him,et dilectus Deo suo erat, and he was beloved of his God,et posuit eum Deus regem super omnem Israël:and God set him as king over all of Israel.et ipsum ergo duxerunt ad peccatum mulieres alienigenæ.And yet foreign women led even him into sin!

NumquidSo how could we disobey and do all this great evil,et nos inobedientes faciemus omne malum grande hoc ut prævaricemur in Deo nostro,so that we would transgress against our God,et ducamus uxores peregrinas?and take foreign wives?”

De filiis autem Jojada filii Eliasib sacerdotis magni,Now one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the high priest, gener erat Sanaballat Horonites, was a son-in-law to Sanballat, a Horonite, quem fugavi a me.and I made him flee from me.

Recordare,O Lord, my God,Domine Deus meus, adversum eos qui polluunt sacerdotium, jusque sacerdotale et Leviticum.remember against those who defile the priesthood and the law of the priests and the Levites!

Igitur mundavi eos ab omnibus alienigenis,And so I cleansed them from all foreigners,et constitui ordines sacerdotum et Levitarum, and I established the orders of the priests and the Levites, unumquemque in ministerio suo:each one in his ministry.

et in oblatione lignorum in temporibus constitutis, et in primitivis: memento mei, Deus meus, in bonum. Amen.O my God, remember me also, for good, because of the offering of wood, at the appointed times, and because of the first-fruits. Amen.
