Factum est autem,Now it happened that, cum audisset Sanaballat quod ædificaremus murum, when Sanballat had heard that we were building the wall, iratus est valde:he was very angry.et motus nimis subsannavit Judæos,And having been moved exceedingly, he ridiculed the Jews.

et dixit coram fratribus suis,And he said,et frequentia Samaritanorum:before his brothersQuid Judæi faciunt imbecilles?and a crowd of the Samaritans:num dimittent eos gentes?“What are the foolish Jews doing?num sacrificabunt,Can it be that the Gentiles will allow them?et complebunt in una die? Will they sacrificenumquid ædificare poterunt lapides de acervis pulveris, and finish in one day?qui combusti sunt?Do they have the ability to make stones out of piles of dust that have been burned up?”

Sed et Tobias Ammanites,Then too, Tobiah, an Ammonite, proximus ejus, his assistant, ait:said:Ædificent: si ascenderit vulpes,“Let them build. When the fox climbs, transiliet murum eorum lapideum.he will leap over their stone wall.”

Audi,Listen,Deus noster,O our God,quia facti sumus despectui:for we have become an object of contempt.converte opprobrium super caput eorum,Turn their reproach upon their own head,et da eos in despectionem in terra captivitatis.and grant that they may be despised in a land of captivity.

Ne operias iniquitatem eorum,May you not conceal their iniquity,et peccatum eorum coram facie tua non deleatur, and may their sin not be wiped away, before your face, quia irriserunt ædificantes.for they have ridiculed those who are building.

Itaque ædificavimus murum,And so we built the wall,et conjunximus totum usque ad partem dimidiam:and we joined it together, even to the unfinished portion.et provocatum est cor populi ad operandum. And the heart of the people was stirred up for the work.

Factum est autem,Now it happened that, cum audisset Sanaballat, when Sanballat, and Tobiah,et Tobias, and the Arabs,et Arabes, and the Ammonites,et Ammanitæ, et Azotii, quod obducta esset cicatrix muri Jerusalem, and the Ashdodites had heard that the walls of Jerusalem had been closed,et quod cœpissent interrupta concludi, and that the breaches had begun to be repaired, irati sunt nimis.they were exceedingly angry.

Et congregati sunt omnes pariter ut venirent,And they all gathered together,et pugnarent contra Jerusalem,so that they might go forth and fight against Jerusalem,et molirentur insidias.and so that they might prepare ambushes.

Et oravimus Deum nostrum,And we prayed to our God,et posuimus custodes super murum die ac nocte contra eos.and we stationed guards upon the wall, day and night, against them.

Dixit autem Judas:Then Judah said:Debilitata est fortitudo portantis,“The strength of those who carry has diminished,et humus nimia est,and the amount of material is very great,et nos non poterimus ædificare murum.and so we will not be able to build the wall.”

Et dixerunt hostes nostri: Nesciant,And our enemies said: “Let them neither know,et ignorent donec veniamus in medium eorum, nor realize, until we arrive in their midst,et interficiamus eos, et cessare faciamus opus.and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”

Factum est autem venientibus Judæis qui habitabant juxta eos,Now it happened that, on ten occasions, some Jews arrived who were living near them,et dicentibus nobis per decem vices, ex omnibus locis quibus venerant ad nos, from all the places from which they came to us, and they told us this.

statui in loco post murum per circuitum populum in ordinem cum gladiis suis,So I stationed the people in order, in places behind the wall, all around it,et lanceis, with their swords,et arcubus.and lances, and bows.

Et perspexi atque surrexi:And I gazed around,et aio ad optimates et magistratus, and I rose up.et ad reliquam partem vulgi:And I said to the nobles,Nolite timere a facie eorum:and to the magistrates,Domini magni et terribilis mementote, and to the rest of the common people:et pugnate pro fratribus vestris,“Do not be afraid before their face.filiis vestris,Remember the great and terrible Lord,et filiabus vestris, and fight on behalf of your brothers,et uxoribus vestris, your sons and your daughters,et domibus vestris.and your wives and your households.”

Factum est autem,Then it happened that, cum audissent inimici nostri nuntiatum esse nobis, when our enemies had heard that it had been reported to us,dissipavit Deus consilium eorum.God defeated their counsel.Et reversi sumus omnes ad muros,And we all returned to the walls, unusquisque ad opus suum.each one to his own work.

Et factum est a die illa,And it happened that, media pars juvenum eorum faciebat opus, from that day,et media parata erat ad bellum:half of their young men were doing the work,et lanceæ,and half were prepared for war with lances,et scuta, and shields,et arcus, and bows,et loricæ,and armor.et principes post eos in omni domo Juda. And the leaders were behind them in all the house of Judah.

Ædificantium in muro,As for those building the wall,et portantium onera, and carrying the burdens,et imponentium:and setting things in place:una manu sua faciebat opus, one of his hands was doing the work,et altera tenebat gladium:and the other was holding a sword.

ædificentium enim unusquisque gladio erat accinctus renes. For each one of the builders was girded with a sword at the waist.Et ædificabant,And they were building,et clangebant buccina juxta me.and they were sounding a trumpet beside me.

Et dixi ad optimates,And I said to the nobles,et ad magistratus, and to the magistrates,et ad reliquam partem vulgi:and to the rest of the common people:Opus grande est et latum,“The work is great and wide,et nos separati sumus in muro procul alter ab altero:and we are separated on the wall far from one another.

in loco quocumque audieritis clangorem tubæ,At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, illuc concurrite ad nos:rush to that place for us.Deus noster pugnabit pro nobis. Our God will fight on our behalf.

Et nos ipsi faciamus opus,And so let us accomplish the work.et media pars nostrum teneat lanceas ab ascensu auroræ donec egrediantur astra. And let one half part of us hold spears, from the ascent of dawn until the stars come out.”

In tempore quoque illo dixi populo:Also at that time, I said to the people:Unusquisque cum puero suo maneat in medio Jerusalem,“Let each one with his servant remain in the midst of Jerusalem.et sint nobis vices per noctem et diem ad operandum. And let us take turns, throughout the night and day, in doing the work.”

Ego autem et fratres mei,But Iet pueri mei,and my brothers,et custodes, and my servants, qui erant post me,and the guards who were behind me,non deponebamus vestimenta nostra:we did not take off our clothes;unusquisque tantum nudabatur ad baptismum.each one only removed his clothes to wash.
