Factum est autem,Now it happened that, cum audisset Sanaballat, when Sanballat, and Tobiah,et Tobias, and Geshem,et Gossem Arabs,an Arab, and our other enemies,et ceteri inimici nostri, had heard that I had built the wall, quod ædificassem ego murum, and that there was no interruption remaining in it,et non esset in ipso residua interruptio (usque ad tempus autem illud valvas non posueram in portis),(even though, at that time, I had not set up the double doors at the gates,)
miserunt SanaballatSanballat and Geshem sent to me,et Gossem ad me,saying:dicentes:“Come,Veni, and let us strike a pact together in the villages,et percutiamus fœdus pariter in viculis in campo Ono.on the plain of Ono.”Ipsi autem cogitabant ut facerent mihi malum. But they were thinking that they would do me harm.
Misi ergo ad eos nuntios,Therefore, dicens:I sent messengers to them,Opus grande ego facio, saying:et non possum descendere,“I am doing a great work,ne forte negligatur cum venero, and I cannot descend,et descendero ad vos.lest perhaps it may be neglected when I go out and descend to you.”
Miserunt autem ad me secundum verbum hoc per quatuor vices:Then they sent to me, with this same word, four times.et respondi eis juxta sermonem priorem. And I responded to them with the same word as before.
Et misit ad me Sanaballat juxta verbum prius quinta vice puerum suum,And Sanballat sent his servant to me a fifth time, with the former word,et epistolam habebat in manu sua scriptam hoc modo:and he had a letter in his hand written in this manner:
In gentibus auditum est,“It has been heard among the Gentiles,et Gossem dixit, and Geshem has said it,quod tu et Judæi cogitetis rebellare, that you and the Jews are planning to rebel,et propterea ædifices murum, and because of this,et levare te velis super eos regem:you are building the wall and thinking to raise yourself as a king over them.propter quam causamFor this reason,
et prophetas posueris, you also have stationed prophets, qui prædicent de te in Jerusalem, who preach about you in Jerusalem, dicentes: Rex in Judæa est.saying: ‘There is a king in Judea!’Auditurus est rex verba hæc:But the king will hear about these words.idcirco nunc veni,Therefore, come now,ut ineamus consilium pariter.so that we may go to counsel together.”
Et misi ad eos,And I sent to them, dicens:saying:Non est factum secundum verba hæc,“There has been nothing done according to these words,quæ tu loqueris:which you have spoken.de corde enim tuo tu componis hæc.For you are inventing these things from your own heart.”
Omnes enim hi terrebant nos,For all these men wished to frighten us,cogitantes quod cessarent manus nostræ ab opere, thinking that our hands would cease from the work,et quiesceremus:and that we would cease.quam ob causam magis confortavi manus meas. For this reason, I strengthened my hands all the more.
Et ingressus sum domum Semaiæ filii Dalaiæ filii Metabeel secreto. And I entered into the house of Shemaiah, the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel,Qui ait:in secret.Tractemus nobiscum in domo Dei in medio templi,And he said: “Let us consult together in the house of God,et claudamus portas ædis:in the midst of the temple.quia venturi sunt ut interficiant te,And let us close the doors of the temple. For they will come to kill you,et nocte venturi sunt ad occidendum te.and they will arrive in the night to put you to death.”
Et dixi:And I said:Num quisquam similis mei fugit?“How could anyone like me flee?et quis ut ego ingredietur templum,And who like me should enter the temple,et vivet?so that he may live?non ingrediar.I will not enter.”
Et intellexi quod Deus non misisset eum,And I understood that God had not sent him,sed quasi vaticinans locutus esset ad me,but he had spoken to me as if he were prophesying,et Tobias et Sanaballat conduxissent eum.and that Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
Acceperat enim pretium,For he had accepted money,ut territus facerem,so that I would be afraid,et peccarem, and would sin,et haberent malum quod exprobrarent mihi.and so that they would have some evil with which to rebuke me.
Memento mei,Remember me,Domine,O Lord, pro Tobia et Sanaballat, because of Tobiah and Sanballat, juxta opera eorum talia:because of their works of this kind. Then, sed et Noadiæ prophetæ,too, Noadiah, a prophetess,et ceterorum prophetarum, and the rest of the prophets, qui terrebant me.would have made me afraid.
Completus est autem murus vigesimo quinto die mensis Elul,Now the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth day of the month of Elul, quinquaginta duobus diebus.in fifty-two days.
Factum est ergo cum audissent omnes inimici nostri,Then it happened that, when all our enemies had heard of it,ut timerent universæ gentes quæ erant in circuitu nostro, all the nations that were around us were afraid,et conciderent intra semetipsos, and they were downcast within themselves.et scirent quod a Deo factum esset opus hoc.For they knew that this work had been accomplished by God.
Sed et in diebus illis multæ optimatum Judæorum epistolæ mittebantur ad Tobiam,But also, in those days, many letters were being sent by the nobles of the Jews to Tobiah,et a Tobia veniebant ad eos.and were arriving from Tobiah to them.
Multi enim erant in Judæa habentes juramentum ejus,For there were many in Judea who had sworn an oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah, quia gener erat Secheniæ filii Area, the son of Arah, and because Jehohanan, his son,et Johanan filius ejus acceperat filiam Mosollam filii Barachiæ:had married the daughter of Meshullam, the son of Berechiah.
sed et laudabant eum coram me,Moreover, they praised him before me,et verba mea nuntiabant ei:and they reported my words to him.et Tobias mittebat epistolas ut terreret me.And Tobiah sent letters, so that he might make me afraid.
