Consurrexit autem Satan contra Israël,Now Satan rose up against Israel,et concitavit David ut numeraret Israël.and he incited David so that he would number Israel.

Dixitque David ad Joab et ad principes populi:And David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people:Ite,“Go,et numerate Israël a Bersabee usque Dan:and number Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan.et afferte mihi numerum ut sciam. And bring me the number, so that I may know it.”

Responditque Joab:And Joab responded:Augeat Dominus populum suum centuplum quam sunt:“May the Lord increase his people a hundred times more than they are.nonne,But,domine mi rex,my lord the king, omnes servi tui sunt?are they not all your servants?quare hoc quærit dominus meus,Why would my lord seek this thing, quod in peccatum reputetur Israëli?which may be imputed as a sin to Israel?”

Sed sermo regis magis prævaluit:But the word of the king prevailed instead.egressusque est Joab,And Joab went away,et circuivit universum Israël:and he traveled around, through all of Israel.et reversus est Jerusalem,And he returned to Jerusalem.

deditque David numerum eorum quos circuierat:And he gave to David the number of those whom he had surveyed.et inventus est omnis numerus Israël,And the entire number of Israel was found to be one million and one hundred thousand men who could draw the sword;mille millia et centum millia virorum educentium gladium:but from Judah,de Juda autem quadringenta septuaginta millia bellatorum.there were four hundred and seventy thousand men of war.

Nam Levi et Benjamin non numeravit:But Levi and Benjamin he did not number.eo quod Joab invitus exsequeretur regis imperium. For Joab executed the orders of the king unwillingly.

Displicuit autem Deo quod jussum erat:Then God was displeased with what had been ordered,et percussit Israël.and so he struck Israel.

Dixitque David ad Deum:And David said to God:Peccavi nimis ut hoc facerem:“I have sinned exceedingly in doing this.obsecro, aufer iniquitatem servi tui,I beg you take away the iniquity of your servant.quia insipienter egi.For I have acted unwisely.”

Et locutus est Dominus ad Gad videntem Davidis,And the Lord spoke to Gad, the seer of David, dicens:saying:

Vade, et loquere ad David,“Go, and speak to David,et dic ei:and tell him:Hæc dicit Dominus: Trium tibi optionem do:Thus says the Lord: I give to you the option of three things.unum, quod volueris, elige,Choose the one that you will want,et faciam tibi.and I will do it to you.”

Cumque venisset Gad ad David, dixit ei:And when Gad had gone to David, he said to him:Hæc dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord:Elige, quod volueris:Choose what you will want:

aut tribus annis famem;Either three years of famine, aut tribus mensibus te fugere hostes tuos,or three months for you to flee from your enemies,et gladium eorum non posse evadere;unable to escape from their sword, aut tribus diebus gladium Domini,or three days for the sword of the Lord and a pestilence to turn within the land,et pestilentiam versari in terra, with the Angel of the Lord killing in every part of Israel.et angelum Domini interficere in universis finibus Israël:Now therefore, nunc igitur vide quid respondeam ei qui misit me.see what I should respond to him who sent me.”

Et dixit David ad Gad:And David said to Gad:Ex omni parte me angustiæ premunt:“There are difficulties pressing upon me from every side.sed melius mihi est ut incidam in manus Domini,But it is better for me to fall into the hands of the Lord, quia multæ sunt miserationes ejus, for his mercies are many, quam in manus hominum.than into the hands of men.”

Misit ergo Dominus pestilentiam in Israël:Therefore, the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel.et ceciderunt de Israël septuaginta millia virorum. And there fell from Israel seventy thousand men.

Misit quoque angelum in Jerusalem ut percuteret eam:Also, he sent an Angel to Jerusalem, so that he might strike it.cumque percuteretur,And while he was striking, vidit Dominus, et misertus est super magnitudine mali:the Lord saw and took pity over the magnitude of the harm.et imperavit angelo qui percutiebat:And he commanded the Angel who was striking:Sufficit,“It is enough.jam cesset manus tua.Now let your hand cease.”Porro angelus Domini stabat juxta aream Ornan Jebusæi.And the Angel of the Lord was standing beside the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Levansque David oculos suos,And David, vidit angelum Domini stantem inter cælumlifting up his eyes,et terram, saw the Angel of the Lord,et evaginatum gladium in manu ejus, standing between heaven and earth with a drawn sword in his hand,et versum contra Jerusalem:turned toward Jerusalem.et ceciderunt tam ipse quam majores natu,And both he and those greater by birth, vestiti ciliciis, being clothed in haircloth, proni in terram.fell prone upon the ground.

Dixitque David ad Deum:And David said to God:Nonne ego sum, qui jussi ut numeraretur populus?“Am I not the one who ordered that the people be numbered?ego, qui peccavi? It is I who sinned;ego, qui malum feci?it is I who did evil.iste grex,This flock, quid commeruit? Domine Deus meus, what does it deserve?vertatur,O Lord my God,obsecro, manus tua in me, et in domum patris mei:I beg you to let your hand be turned against me and against the house of my father.populus autem tuus non percutiatur. But let not your people be struck down.”

Angelus autem Domini præcepit Gad ut diceret Davidi ut ascenderet,Then the Angel of the Lord instructed Gad to tell David that he should ascendexstrueretque altare Domino Deo in area Ornan Jebusæi.and build an altar to the Lord God on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Ascendit ergo David juxta sermonem Gad,Therefore, David ascended, in accord with the word of Gad,quem locutus ei fuerat ex nomine Domini.which he had spoken to him in the name of the Lord.

Porro Ornan cum suspexisset et vidisset angelum,Now when Ornan had looked up and seen the Angel, quatuorque filii ejus cum eo,he and his four sons hid themselves.absconderunt se:For at that time, nam eo tempore terebat in area triticum.he was threshing wheat upon the floor.

Igitur cum veniret David ad Ornan,Then, as David was approaching Ornan, conspexit eum Ornan, et processit ei obviam de area,Ornan saw him, and he went out from the threshing floor to meet him.et adoravit eum pronus in terram. And he reverenced him prone on the ground.

Dixitque ei David:And David said to him:Da mihi locum areæ tuæ,“Give this place of your threshing floor to me,ut ædificem in ea altare Domino:so that I may build an altar to the Lord upon it.ita ut quantum valet argenti accipias,And you shall accept from me as much money as it is worth,et cesset plaga a populo.so that the plague may cease from the people.”

Dixit autem Ornan ad David:But Ornan said to David:Tolle,“Take it,et faciat dominus meus rex quodcumque ei placet:and may my lord the king do whatever pleases him.sedMoreover,et boves do in holocaustum,I give the oxen also as a holocaust,et tribulas in ligna, and the plow for wood,et triticum in sacrificium:and the wheat for a sacrifice.omnia libens præbebo.I will offer all freely.”

Dixitque ei rex David:And king David said to him:Nequaquam ita fiet,“By no means shall it be so.sed argentum dabo quantum valet:Instead, I will give money to you, as much as it is worth.neque enim tibi auferre debeo,For I must not take it from you,et sic offerre Domino holocausta gratuita.and thereby offer to the Lord holocausts that cost nothing.”

Dedit ergo David Ornan pro loco siclos auri justissimi ponderis sexcentos. Therefore, David gave Ornan, for the place, the very just weight of six hundred shekels of gold.

Et ædificavit ibi altare Domino,And he built an altar to the Lord there.obtulitque holocausta et pacifica,And he offered holocausts and peace offerings,et invocavit Dominum;and he called upon the Lord.et exaudivit eum in igne de cælo super altare holocausti. And he heeded him by sending fire from heaven upon the altar of the holocaust.

Præcepitque Dominus angelo,And the Lord instructed the Angel,et convertit gladium suum in vaginam.and he turned his sword back into its sheath.

Protinus ergo David,Then, videns quod exaudisset eum Dominus in area Ornan Jebusæi,seeing that the Lord had heeded him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, immolavit ibi victimas.David immediately immolated victims there.

Tabernaculum autem Domini,But the tabernacle of the Lord, quod fecerat Moyses in deserto, which Moses had made in the desert,et altare holocaustorum, and the altar of holocausts,ea tempestate erat in excelso Gabaon.were at that time on the high place of Gibeon.

Et non prævaluit David ire ad altare ut ibi obsecraret Deum:And David was unable to go to the altar, so that he might pray to God there.nimio enim fuerat in timore perterritus,For he had been struck with an exceedingly great fear, videns gladium angeli Domini.seeing the sword of the Angel of the Lord.
