Profectus est autem Roboam in Sichem:Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem.illuc enim cunctus Israël convenerat ut constituerent eum regem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.

Quod cum audisset Jeroboam filius Nabat,But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, qui erat in Ægypto (fugerat quippe illuc ante Salomonem),(indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it,statim reversus est.he promptly returned.

Vocaveruntque eum,And they summoned him,et venit cum universo Israël:and he arrived with all of Israel.et locuti sunt ad Roboam,And they spoke to Rehoboam, dicentes:saying:

Pater tuus durissimo jugo nos pressit:“Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke.tu leviora impera patre tuo,You should govern us more lightly than your father, qui nobis imposuit gravem servitutem, who imposed on us a heavy servitude,et paululum de onere subleva, and so lift up some of the burden,ut serviamus tibi.so that we may serve you.”

Qui ait:But he said,Post tres dies revertimini ad me.“Return to me after three days.”Cumque abiisset populus,And when the people had gone away,

iniit consilium cum senibus qui steterant coram patre ejus Salomone dum adhuc viveret,he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, dicens: Quid datis consilii ut respondeam populo?“What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”

Qui dixerunt ei:And they said to him,Si placueris populo huic,“If you please this people,et leniveris eos verbis clementibus, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, servient tibi omni tempore.they will be your servants for all days.”

At ille reliquit consilium senum,But he set aside the counsel of the elders,et cum juvenibus tractare cœpit, and he began to have discussion with the youth, qui cum eo nutriti fuerant, who had been raised with himet erant in comitatu illius.and who were among his companions.

Dixitque ad eos:And he said to them:Quid vobis videtur?“How does it seem to you?vel respondere quid debeo populo huic,Or how should I respond to this people, qui dixit mihi:who have said to me,Subleva jugum quod imposuit nobis pater tuus?‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’”

At illi responderunt ut juvenes,But they responded like youths,et nutriti cum eo in deliciis, having been raised with him in luxury, atque dixerunt:and they said:Sic loqueris populo qui dixit tibi:“So shall you speak to the people, who said to you,Pater tuus aggravavit jugum nostrum, tu subleva:‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’et sic respondebis ei:and so shall you respond to them:Minimus digitus meus grossior est lumbis patris mei.‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.

Pater meus imposuit vobis grave jugum,My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you,et ego majus pondus apponam;and I will place more weight upon it.pater meus cecidit vos flagellis,My father cut you with whips; truly, ego vero cædam vos scorpionibus.I will beat you with scorpions.’”

Venit ergo Jeroboam et universus populus ad Roboam die tertio,Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, sicut præceperat eis.just as he had instructed them.

Responditque rex dura,And the king responded harshly, derelicto consilio seniorum:abandoning the counsel of the elders.

locutusque est juxta juvenum voluntatem:And he spoke according to the will of the youths:Pater meus grave vobis imposuit jugum,“My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, quod ego gravius faciam;which I will make heavier.pater meus cecidit vos flagellis,My father cut you with whips; truly, ego vero cædam vos scorpionibus.I will beat you with scorpions.”

Et non acquievit populi precibus: erat enim voluntatis Dei ut compleretur sermo ejus quem locutus fuerat per manum Ahiæ Silonitis ad Jeroboam filium Nabat. And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.

Populus autem universus rege duriora dicente,Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, sic locutus est ad eum:spoke to him in this way:Non est nobis pars in David,“There is no portion for us in David, neque hæreditas in filio Isai.and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse.Revertere in tabernacula tua,Return to your dwellings, O Israel.Israël;Then you,tu autem pasce domum tuam David.O David, shall pasture your own house.”Et abiit Israël in tabernacula sua.And Israel went away to their dwellings.

Super filios autem Israël qui habitabant in civitatibus Juda, regnavit Roboam. But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.

Misitque rex Roboam Aduram,And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, qui præerat tributis, who was in charge of the tributes.et lapidaverunt eum filii Israël,And the sons of Israel stoned him,et mortuus est:and he died.porro rex Roboam currum festinavit ascendere,And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot,et fugit in Jerusalem.and he fled to Jerusalem.

Recessitque Israël a domo David,And Israel withdrew from the house of David, usque ad diem hanc.even to this day.
