Cumque roboratum fuisset regnum Roboam et confortatum,And when the kingdom of Rehoboam had been strengthened and fortified, dereliquit legem Domini,he abandoned the law of the Lord,et omnis Israël cum eo.and all of Israel with him.
Anno autem quinto regni Roboam,Then, in the fifth year of the reign of Rehoboam, ascendit Sesac rex Ægypti in Jerusalem (quia peccaverant Domino)Shishak, the king of Egypt, ascended against Jerusalem (for they had sinned against the Lord)
cum mille ducentis curribus, with one thousand two hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen.et sexaginta millibus equitum:And the common people could not be numbered who had arrived with him from Egypt, nec erat numerus vulgi quod venerat cum eo ex Ægypto, namely,Libyes scilicet, the Libyans,et Troglodytæ,and the Troglodytes,et Æthiopes.and the Ethiopians.
Cepitque civitates munitissimas in Juda,And he seized the most fortified cities in Judah,et venit usque in Jerusalem.and he went even to Jerusalem.
Semeias autem propheta ingressus est ad Roboam,Then Shemaiah, the prophet, entered to Rehoboam,et principes Juda qui congregati fuerant in Jerusalem, fugientes Sesac:and to the leaders of Judah who had gathered together in Jerusalem while fleeing from Shishak, dixitque ad eos:and he said to them:Hæc dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord:Vos reliquistis me,You have abandoned me,et ego reliqui vos in manu Sesac.and so I have abandoned you into the hand of Shishak.”
Consternatique principes Israël et rex,And the leaders of Israel, and the king, dixerunt:being in consternation,Justus est Dominus.said, “The Lord is just.”
Cumque vidisset Dominus quod humiliati essent,And when the Lord had seen that they were humbled, factus est sermo Domini ad Semeiam, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, dicens:saying:Quia humiliati sunt,“Because they have been humbled, non disperdam eos,I will not disperse them.daboque eis pauxillum auxilii,And I will give to them a little help,et non stillabit furor meus super Jerusalem per manum Sesac.and my fury will not rain down upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.
Verumtamen servient ei,Yet truly, they shall serve him,ut sciant distantiam servitutis meæ,so that they may know the difference between my servitude,et servitutis regni terrarum.and the servitude of a kingdom of the lands.”
Recessit itaque Sesac rex Ægypti ab Jerusalem,And so Shishak, the king of Egypt, withdrew from Jerusalem, sublatis thesauris domus Domini et domus regis:taking up the treasures of the house of the Lord and of the house of the king.omniaque secum tulit, et clypeos aureos quos fecerat Salomon:And he took away everything with him, even the gold shields that Solomon had made.
pro quibus fecit rex æneos,In place of these, the king made bronze ones,et tradidit illos principibus scutariorum, and he delivered them to the leaders of the shield bearers, qui custodiebant vestibulum palatii.who were guarding the vestibule of the palace.
Cumque introiret rex domum Domini,And when the king would enter into the house of the Lord, veniebant scutarii et tollebant eos,the shield bearers would arrive and take them, iterumque referebant eos ad armamentarium suum.and they would carry them back to their armory.
Verumtamen quia humiliati sunt,Yet truly, because they were humbled, aversa est ab eis ira Domini, the wrath of the Lord turned away from them, nec deleti sunt penitus:and so they were not utterly destroyed.siquidem et in Juda inventa sunt opera bona. And indeed, good works were also found in Judah.
Confortatus est ergo rex Roboam in Jerusalem,Therefore, atque regnavit:king Rehoboam was strengthened in Jerusalem, quadraginta autemand he reigned.et unius anni erat cum regnare cœpisset,He was forty-one years old when he had begun to reign,et decemand he reigned for seventeen years in Jerusalem,et septem annis regnavit in Jerusalem, the city that the Lord chose out of all the tribes of Israel, urbe quam elegit Dominus ut confirmaret nomen suum ibi,so that he might confirm his name there.de cunctis tribubus Israël:Now the name of his mother was Naamah, nomen autem matris ejus Naama Ammanitis.an Ammonite.
Fecit autem malum,But he did evil,et non præparavit cor suum ut quæreret Dominum.and he did not prepare his heart so as to seek the Lord.
Opera vero Roboam prima et novissima scripta sunt in libris Semeiæ prophetæ, et Addo videntis, et diligenter exposita: pugnaveruntque adversum se Roboam et Jeroboam cunctis diebus.Truly, the works of Rehoboam, the first and the last, have been written in the books of Shemaiah, the prophet, and of Iddo, the seer, and diligently set forth. And Rehoboam and Jeroboam fought against one another during all their days.
Et dormivit Roboam cum patribus suis,And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, sepultusque est in civitate David:and he was buried in the City of David.et regnavit Abia filius ejus pro eo.And his son, Abijah, reigned in his place.
