Viginti annorum erat Achaz cum regnare cœpisset,Ahaz was twenty years old when he had begun to reign,et sedecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem.and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem.Non fecit rectum in conspectu Domini sicut David pater ejus,He did not do what is right in the sight of the Lord, as his father David did.
sed ambulavit in viis regum Israël,Instead, he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel.insuper et statuas fudit Baalim. Moreover, he also cast statues for the Baals.
Ipse est qui adolevit incensum in valle Benennom,It is he who burned incense in the Valley of the son of Hinnom.et lustravit filios suos in igne juxta ritum gentium quas interfecit Dominus in adventu filiorum Israël.And he purified his sons by fire, in accord with the ritual of the nations that the Lord put to death at the advent of the sons of Israel.
Sacrificabat quoque,Also,et thymiama succendebat in excelsis,he was sacrificing and burning incense in the high places,et in collibus, and on the hills,et sub omni ligno frondoso.and under every leafy tree.
Tradiditque eum Dominus Deus ejus in manu regis Syriæ,And so the Lord, his God, delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria, qui percussit eum, magnamque prædam cepit de ejus imperio, who struck him and took great plunder from his kingdom.et adduxit in Damascum:And he carried it away to Damascus.manibus quoque regis Israël traditus est,Also, he was delivered into the hands of the king of Israel,et percussus plaga grandi.and he struck him with great affliction.
Occiditque Phacee filius Romeliæ,And Pekah, the son of Remaliah, killed,de Juda centum viginti millia in die uno,on one day, one hundred twenty thousand, omnes viros bellatores:all of them men of war from Judah,eo quod reliquissent Dominum Deum patrum suorum.because they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers.
Eodem tempore occidit Zechri,In the same time, Zichri, vir potens ex Ephraim,a powerful man of Ephraim,Maasiam filium regis, killed Maaseiah, the son of the king,et Ezricam ducem domus ejus, and Azrikam, the governor of his house,Elcanam quoque secundum a rege.and also Elkanah, who was second to the king.
Ceperuntque filii Israël de fratribus suis ducenta millia mulierum,And the sons of Israel seized, from their brothers, two hundred thousand women, puerorum, et puellarum, boys, and girls,et infinitam prædam:and immense plunder.pertuleruntque eam in Samariam. And they took it away to Samaria.
Ea tempestate erat ibi propheta Domini,At that time, there was a prophet of the Lord there, nomine Oded:named Oded.qui egressus obviam exercitui venienti in Samariam,And going out to meet the army arriving in Samaria, he said to them:dixit eis:“Behold, the Lord,Ecce iratus Dominus Deus patrum vestrorum contra Juda, the God of your fathers, having become angry against Judah, tradidit eos in manibus vestris, has delivered them into your hands.et occidistis eos atrociter,But you have killed them by atrocities, ita ut ad cælum pertingeret vestra crudelitas.so that your cruelty has reached up to heaven.
Insuper filios Juda et Jerusalem vultis vobis subjicere in servos et ancillas:Moreover, you wanted to subjugate the sons of Judah and Jerusalem as your men and women servants, quod nequaquam facto opus est:which is a work that should never be done.peccastis enim super hoc Domino Deo vestro. And so you sinned in this matter against the Lord your God.
Sed audite consilium meum,But listen to my counsel,et reducite captivos quos adduxistis de fratribus vestris, and release the captives, whom you have brought from your brothers.quia magnus furor Domini imminet vobis. For a great fury of the Lord is hanging over you.”
Steterunt itaque viri de principibus filiorum Ephraim,And so, some of the leaders of the sons of Ephraim,Azarias filius Johanan,Azariah, the son of Johanan,Barachias filius Mosollamoth,Berechiah, the son of Meshillemoth,Ezechias filius Sellum,Jehizkiah, the son of Shallum,et Amasa filius Adali, and Amasa, the son of Hadlai, contra eos qui veniebant de prælio, stood up against those who were arriving from the battle.
et dixerunt eis:And they said to them:Non introducetis huc captivos,“You shall not lead back captives to here,ne peccemus Domino. Quare vultis adjicere super peccata nostra, lest we sin against the Lord. Why are you willing to add to our sins,et vetera cumulare delicta?and to build upon our old offenses?grande quippe peccatum est,For indeed, the sin is great,et ira furoris Domini imminet super Israël.and the furious anger of the Lord is hanging over Israel.”
Dimiseruntque viri bellatores prædam,And the warriors released the spoilset universa quæ ceperant, and all that they had seized, coram principibus,in the sight of the leaderset omni multitudine.and the entire multitude.
Steteruntque viri quos supra memoravimus,And the men, whom we mentioned above,et apprehendentes captivos, rose up and took the captives.omnesque qui nudi erant,All those who were naked, vestierunt de spoliis:they clothed from the spoils.cumque vestissent eos,And when they had clothed them,et calceassent, and had given them shoes,et refecissent cibo ac potu, and had refreshed them with food and drink, unxissentque propter laborem, et adhibuissent eis curam:and had anointed them because of the hardship, and had cared for them, quicumque ambulare non poterant, et erant imbecillo corpore, whoever was not able to walk and whoever was feeble in body, imposuerunt eos jumentis, they set them upon beasts of burden,et adduxerunt Jericho civitatem palmarum ad fratres eorum, and they led them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brothers, ipsique reversi sunt in Samariam.and they themselves returned to Samaria.
Tempore illo misit rex Achaz ad regem Assyriorum,In that time, king Ahaz sent to the king of the Assyrians, postulans auxilium.requesting assistance.
Veneruntque Idumæi,And the Edomites arrivedet percusserunt multos ex Juda, and struck down many of Judah,et ceperunt prædam magnam.and they seized great plunder.
Philisthiim quoque diffusi sunt per urbes campestres,Also, the Philistines spread out among the cities of the plains,et ad meridiem Juda:and to the south of Judah.ceperuntque Bethsames,And they seized Beth-shemesh,et Ajalon, and Aijalon,et Gaderoth, and Gederoth,Socho quoque, and also Soco,et Thamnan, and Timnah,et Gamzo, and Gimzo, cum viculis suis, with their villages,et habitaverunt in eis.and they lived in them.
Humiliaverat enim Dominus Judam propter Achaz regem Juda,For the Lord had humbled Judah because of Ahaz, the king of Judah,eo quod nudasset eum auxilio, since he had stripped it of help,et contemptui habuisset Dominum.and had shown contempt for the Lord.
Adduxitque contra eum Thelgathphalnasar regem Assyriorum,And he led against him Tilgath-pilneser,quithe king of the Assyrians,et afflixit eum,who also afflicted him and laid waste to him,et nullo resistente vastavit.without resistance.
Igitur Achaz,And so Ahaz, spoliata domo Domini, despoiling the house of the Lord,et domo regum ac principum, and the house of the kings and the leaders, dedit regi Assyriorum munera, gave gifts to the king of the Assyrians,et tamen nihil ei profuit.and yet it profited him nothing.
Insuper et tempore angustiæ suæ auxit contemptum in Dominum,Moreover, in the time of his anguish, he also added to his contempt against the Lord.ipse per se rex Achaz,King Ahaz himself, by himself,
immolavit diis Damasci victimas percussoribus suis, immolated victims to the gods of Damascus, those who had struck him.et dixit:And he said:Dii regum Syriæ auxiliantur eis,“The gods of the kings of Syria assist them, quos ego placabo hostiis, and so I will please them with victims,et aderunt mihi:and they will help me.”cum e contrario ipsi fuerint ruinæ ei, et universo Israël.But to the contrary, they had been the ruin of him and of all Israel.
Direptis itaque Achaz omnibus vasis domus Dei,And so, Ahaz, having despoiled and broken apart all the vessels of the house of God,atque confractis, clausit januas templi Dei,closed up the doors of the temple of God,et fecit sibi altaria in universis angulis Jerusalem.and made for himself altars in all the corners of Jerusalem.
In omnibus quoque urbibus Juda exstruxit aras ad cremandum thus,Also, he constructed altars in all the cities of Judah, in order to burn frankincense, atque ad iracundiam provocavit Dominum Deum patrum suorum.and so he provoked the Lord, the God of his fathers, to wrath.
Reliqua autem sermonum ejus,But the rest of his words,et omnium operum suorum priorum et novissimorum, and all his works, the first and the last, scripta sunt in libro regum Juda et Israël.have been written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
Dormivitque Achaz cum patribus suis,And Ahaz slept with his fathers.et sepelierunt eum in civitate Jerusalem:And they buried him in the city of Jerusalem.neque enim receperunt eum in sepulchra regum Israël.And they did not allow him to be in the sepulchers of the kings of Israel.Regnavitque Ezechias filius ejus pro eo.And his son, Hezekiah, reigned in his place.
