Similiter et mulieres subditæ sint viris suis:Similarly also, wives should be subject to their husbands, so that,ut etsi qui non credunt verbo, even if some do not believe the Word, per mulierem conversationem sine verbo lucrifiant:they may benefit without the Word, through the behavior of these wives,
considerantes in timore castam conversationem vestram.as they consider with fear your chaste behavior.
Quarum non sit extrinsecus capillatura,For you, there should be no unnecessary adornment of the hair, aut circumdatio auri,or surrounding with gold, aut indumenti vestimentorum cultus:or the wearing of ornate clothing.
sed qui absconditus est cordis homo,Instead,in incorruptibilitate quieti, you should be a hidden person of the heart,et modesti spiritus, with the incorruptibility of a quiet and meek spirit, qui est in conspectu Dei locuples.rich in the sight of God.
Sic enim aliquandoFor in this way,et sanctæ mulieres,in past times also, sperantes in Deo,holy women adorned themselves, ornabant se,hoping in God,subjectæ propriis viris.being subject to their own husbands.
Sicut Sara obediebat Abrahæ,For so Sarah obeyed Abraham, dominum eum vocans:calling him lord.cujus estis filiæ benefacientes,You are her daughters,et non pertimentes ullam perturbationem.well-behaved and unafraid of any disturbance.
Viri similiter cohabitantes secundum scientiam,Similarly, quasi infirmiori vasculo muliebri impartientes honorem, you husbands should live with them in accord with knowledge, tamquam et cohæredibus gratiæ vitæ:bestowing honor on the female as the weaker vessel and as co-heirs of the life of grace,ut non impediantur orationes vestræ.so that your prayers may not be hindered.
In fine autem omnes unanimes,And finally, may you all be of one mind:compatientes fraternitatis amatores, compassionate, loving brotherhood, misericordes, modesti, merciful, meek, humiles:humble,
non reddentes malum pro malo, not repaying evil with evil, nec maledictum pro maledicto, nor slander with slander, but,sed e contrario benedicentes:to the contrary, repaying with blessings.quia in hoc vocati estis,For to this you have been called,ut benedictionem hæreditate possideatis.so that you may possess the inheritance of a blessing.
Qui enim vult vitam diligere,For whoever wants to love lifeet dies videre bonos, and to see good days should restrain his tongue from evil,coërceat linguam suam a malo, and his lips,et labia ejus ne loquantur dolum.so that they utter no deceit.
Declinet a malo,Let him turn away from evil,et faciat bonum:and do good.inquirat pacem,Let him seek peace,et sequatur eam:and pursue it.
quia oculi Domini super justos,For the eyes of the Lord are upon the just,et aures ejus in preces eorum:and his ears are with their prayers, vultus autem Domini super facientes mala.but the countenance of the Lord is upon those who do evil.
Et quis est qui vobis noceat,And who is it who can harm you,si boni æmulatores fueritis?if you are zealous in what is good?
Sed et si quid patimini propter justitiam, beati. And yet, even when you suffer something for the sake of justice,Timorem autem eorum ne timueritis, you are blessed. So then, do not be afraid with their fear,et non conturbemini.and do not be disturbed.
Dominum autem Christum sanctificate in cordibus vestris,But sanctify Christ the Lord in your hearts, parati semper ad satisfactionem omni poscenti vos rationem de ea, quæ in vobis est, spe.being always ready to give an explanation to all who ask you the reason for that hope which is in you.
Sed cum modestia,But do so with meeknesset timore, and fear, conscientiam habentes bonam:having a good conscience,ut in eo,so that, quod detrahunt vobis,in whatever matter they may slander you, confundantur, they shall be confounded, qui calumniantur vestram bonam in Christo conversationem.since they falsely accuse your good behavior in Christ.
Melius est enim benefacientes (si voluntas Dei velit) pati,For it is better to suffer for doing good, if it is the will of God,quam malefacientes.than for doing evil.
Quia et Christus semel pro peccatis nostris mortuus est,For Christ also died once for our sins, the Just One on behalf of the unjust, justus pro injustis,so that he might offer us to God,ut nos offerret Deo,having died, certainly, mortificatus quidem carne, vivificatus autem spiritu.in the flesh, but having been enlivened by the Spirit.
In quo et his,And in the Spirit, qui in carcere erant,he preached to those who were in prison, spiritibus veniens prædicavit:going to those souls
qui increduli fuerant aliquando, who had been unbelieving in past times, quando exspectabant Dei patientiam in diebus Noë,while they waited for the patience of God, as in the days of Noah, cum fabricaretur arca:when the ark was being built.in qua pauci,In that ark,id est octo animæ,a few, that is,salvæ factæ sunt per aquam.eight souls, were saved by water.
Quod et vos nunc similis formæ salvos fecit baptisma:And now you also are saved, in a similar manner, by baptism, non carnis depositio sordium, not by the testimony of sordid flesh, sed conscientiæ bonæ interrogatio in Deum per resurrectionem Jesu Christi.but by the examination of a good conscience in God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Qui est in dextera Dei,He is at the right hand of God,deglutiens mortem ut vitæ æternæ hæredes efficeremur:devouring death, profectus in cælum subjectis sibi angelis,so that we may be made heirs to eternal life.et potestatibus,And since he has journeyed to heaven,et virtutibus.the Angels and powers and virtues are subject to him.
