Seniores ergo, qui in vobis sunt,Therefore, I beg the elders who are among you, obsecro, consenior et testis Christi passionum: qui et ejus,as one who is also an elder and a witness of the Passion of Christ,quæ in futuro revelanda est, gloriæ communicator:who also shares in that glory which is to be revealed in the future:
pascite qui in vobis est gregem Dei,pasture the flock of God that is among you, providentes non coacte, providing for it, not as a requirement, sed spontanee secundum Deum:but willingly, in accord with God,neque turpis lucri gratia, sed voluntarie:and not for the sake of tainted profit, but freely,
neque ut dominantes in cleris, not so as to dominate by means of the clerical state, sed forma facti gregis ex animo.but so as to be formed into a flock from the heart.
Et cum apparuerit princeps pastorum,And when the Leader of pastors will have appeared, percipietis immarcescibilem gloriæ coronam.you shall secure an unfading crown of glory.
Similiter adolescentes subditi estote senioribus.Similarly, young persons, be subject to the elders.Omnes autem invicem humilitatem insinuate,And infuse all humility among one another, quia Deus superbis resistit, for God resists the arrogant, humilibus autem dat gratiam.but to the humble he gives grace.
Humiliamini igitur sub potenti manu Dei,And so, be humbled under the powerful hand of God,ut vos exaltet in tempore visitationis:so that he may exalt you in the time of visitation.
omnem sollicitudinem vestram projicientes in eum,Cast all your cares upon him, quoniam ipsi cura est de vobis.for he takes care of you.
Sobrii estote,Be sober and vigilant.et vigilate:For your adversary, the devil, quia adversarius vester diabolus tamquam leo rugiens circuit, quærens quem devoret:is like a roaring lion, traveling around and seeking those whom he might devour.
cui resistite fortes in fide:Resist him by being strong in faith, scientes eamdem passionem ei quæ in mundo est vestræ fraternitati fieri.being aware that the same passions afflict those who are your brothers in the world.
Deus autem omnis gratiæ,But the God of all grace, qui vocavit nos in æternam suam gloriam in Christo Jesu, who has called us to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, modicum passos ipse perficiet, will himself perfect, confirm, and establish us,confirmabit, solidabitque.after a brief time of suffering.
Ipsi gloria, et imperium in sæcula sæculorum. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever.Amen.Amen.
Per Silvanum fidelem fratrem vobis,I have written briefly,ut arbitror, through Sylvanus, breviter scripsi:whom I consider to be a faithful brother to you, obsecrans et contestans, begginghanc esse veram gratiam Dei,and testifying that this is the true grace of God,in qua statis.in which you have been established.
