Canticum graduum.A Canticle in steps.Nisi quia Dominus erat in nobis,If the Lord had not been with us,dicat nunc Israël,let Israel now say it:

nisi quia Dominus erat in nobis:if the Lord had not been with us,cum exsurgerent homines in nos, when men rose up against us,

forte vivos deglutissent nos;perhaps they would have swallowed us alive.cum irasceretur furor eorum in nos,When their fury was enraged against us,

forsitan aqua absorbuisset nos;perhaps the waters would have engulfed us.

torrentem pertransivit anima nostra; Our soul has passed through a torrent.forsitan pertransisset anima nostra aquam intolerabilem.Perhaps, our soul had even passed through intolerable water.

Benedictus Dominus,Blessed is the Lord, qui non dedit nos in captionem dentibus eorum.who has not given us into the harm of their teeth.

Anima nostra sicut passer erepta est de laqueo venantium; Our soul has been snatched away like a sparrow from the snare of the hunters.laqueus contritus est,The snare has been broken,et nos liberati sumus.and we have been freed.

Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini,Our help is in the name of the Lord, qui fecit cælum et terram.who made heaven and earth.
