In finem.Unto the end.Puero Domini David,For David, qui locutus est Domino verba cantici hujus, the servant of the Lord,in die qua eripuit eum Dominus de manu omnium inimicorum ejus, who spoke the words of this canticle to the Lord,et de manu Saul,in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.et dixit:And he said:
Diligam te, Domine,I will love you, fortitudo mea.O Lord my strength.
Dominus firmamentum meum,The Lord is my firmament,et refugium meum,my refuge,et liberator meus.and my liberator.Deus meus adjutor meus,My God is my helper,et sperabo in eum;and I hope in him:protector meus,my protector,et cornu salutis meæ,and the horn of my salvation,et susceptor meus.and my support.
Laudans invocabo Dominum,Praising, I will call upon the Lord.et ab inimicis meis salvus ero.And I will be saved from my enemies.
Circumdederunt me dolores mortis,The sorrows of death surrounded me,et torrentes iniquitatis conturbaverunt me.and the torrents of iniquity dismayed me.
Dolores inferni circumdederunt me;The sorrows of Hell encompassed me,præoccupaverunt me laquei mortis.and the snares of death intercepted me.
In tribulatione mea invocavi Dominum,In my tribulation, I called upon the Lord,et ad Deum meum clamavi:and I cried out to my God.et exaudivit de templo sancto suo vocem meam; And he listened to my voice from his holy temple.et clamor meus in conspectu ejus introivit in aures ejus. And my cry in his presence entered into his ears.
Commota est,The earth was shaken,et contremuit terra;and it trembled.fundamenta montium conturbata sunt,The foundations of the mountains were disturbed,et commota sunt:and they were shaken, quoniam iratus est eis.because he was angry with them.
Ascendit fumus in ira ejus,A smoke ascended by his wrath,et ignis a facie ejus exarsit;and a fire flared up from his face:carbones succensi sunt ab eo.coals were kindled by it.
Inclinavit cælos,He bent the heavens,et descendit, and they descended.et caligo sub pedibus ejus. And darkness was under his feet.
Et ascendit super cherubim,And he ascended upon the cherubim,et volavit;and he flew:volavit super pennas ventorum.he flew upon the feathers of the winds.
Et posuit tenebras latibulum suum; And he set darkness as his hiding place,in circuitu ejus tabernaculum ejus, with his tabernacle all around him:tenebrosa aqua in nubibus aëris.dark waters in the clouds of the air.
Præ fulgore in conspectu ejus nubes transierunt; At the brightness that was before his sight, grandothe clouds crossed by,et carbones ignis.with hail and coals of fire.
Et intonuit de cælo Dominus,And the Lord thundered from heaven,et Altissimus dedit vocem suam:and the Most High uttered his voice:grando et carbones ignis.hail and coals of fire.
Et misit sagittas suas,And he sent forth his arrowset dissipavit eos;and scattered them.fulgura multiplicavit,He multiplied lightnings,et conturbavit eos.and he set them in disarray.
Et apparuerunt fontes aquarum,Then the fountains of waters appeared,et revelata sunt fundamenta orbis terrarum, and the foundations of the world were revealed,ab increpatione tua,by your rebuke,Domine,O Lord,ab inspiratione spiritus iræ tuæ.by the inspiration of the Spirit of your wrath.
Misit de summo,He sent from on high,et accepit me;and he accepted me.et assumpsit me de aquis multis. And he took me up, out of many waters.
Eripuit me de inimicis meis fortissimis,He rescued me from my strongest enemies,et ab his qui oderunt me.and from those who hated me.Quoniam confortati sunt super me;For they had been too strong for me.
prævenerunt me in die afflictionis meæ:They intercepted me in the day of my affliction,et factus est Dominus protector meus.and the Lord became my protector.
Et eduxit me in latitudinem; And he led me out, into a wide place.salvum me fecit, quoniam voluit me,He accomplished my salvation, because he willed me.
et retribuet mihi Dominus secundum justitiam meam,And the Lord will reward me according to my justice,et secundum puritatem manuum mearum retribuet mihi:and he will repay me according to the purity of my hands.
quia custodivi vias Domini,For I have preserved the ways of the Lord, nec impie gessi a Deo meo;and I have not behaved impiously before my God.
quoniam omnia judicia ejus in conspectu meo,For all his judgments are in my sight, and his justice,et justitias ejus non repuli a me.I have not pushed away from me.
Et ero immaculatus cum eo;And I will be immaculate together with him,et observabo me ab iniquitate mea.and I will keep myself from my iniquity.
Et retribuet mihi Dominus secundum justitiam meam,And the Lord will reward me according to my justiceet secundum puritatem manuum mearum in conspectu oculorum ejus.and according to the purity of my hands before his eyes.
Cum sancto sanctus eris,With the holy, you will be holy,et cum viro innocente innocens eris, and with the innocent, you will be innocent,
et cum electo electus eris, and with the elect, you will be elect,et cum perverso perverteris.and with the perverse, you will be perverse.
Quoniam tu populum humilem salvum facies,For you will save the humble people,et oculos superborum humiliabis.but you will bring down the eyes of the arrogant.
Quoniam tu illuminas lucernam meam,For you illuminate my lamp,Domine;O Lord.Deus meus,My God,illumina tenebras meas.enlighten my darkness.
Quoniam in te eripiar a tentatione; For in you, I will be delivered from temptation;et in Deo meo transgrediar murum.and with my God, I will climb over a wall.
Deus meus,As for my God,impolluta via ejus;his way is undefiled.eloquia Domini igne examinata:The eloquence of the Lord has been examined by fire.protector est omnium sperantium in se.He is the protector of all who hope in him.
Quoniam quis deus præter Dominum? For who is God, except the Lord?aut quis deus præter Deum nostrum? And who is God, except our God?
Deus qui præcinxit me virtute,It is God who has wrapped me with virtueet posuit immaculatam viam meam;and made my way immaculate.
qui perfecit pedes meos tamquam cervorum,It is he who has perfected my feet, like the feet of deer,et super excelsa statuens me;and who stations me upon the heights.
qui docet manus meas ad prælium. It is he who trains my hands for battle.Et posuisti, ut arcum æreum, brachia mea,And you have set my arms like a bow of brass.
et dedisti mihi protectionem salutis tuæ:And you have given me the protection of your salvation.et dextera tua suscepit me,And your right hand sustains me.et disciplina tua correxit me in finem,And your discipline has corrected me unto the end.et disciplina tua ipsa me docebit. And your discipline itself will teach me.
Dilatasti gressus meos subtus me,You have expanded my footsteps under me,et non sunt infirmata vestigia mea.and my tracks have not been weakened.
Persequar inimicos meos,I will pursue my enemieset comprehendam illos;and apprehend them.et non convertar donec deficiant. And I will not turn back until they have failed.
Confringam illos,I will break them, nec poterunt stare;and they will not be able to stand.cadent subtus pedes meos. They will fall under my feet.
Et præcinxisti me virtute ad bellum,And you have wrapped me with virtue for the battle.et supplantasti insurgentes in me subtus me.And those rising up against me, you have subdued under me.
Et inimicos meos dedisti mihi dorsum,And you have given the back of my enemies to me,et odientes me disperdidisti.and you have destroyed those who hated me.
Clamaverunt,They cried out,nec erat qui salvos faceret;but there was none to save them,ad Dominum,to the Lord, nec exaudivit eos.but he did not heed them.
Et comminuam eos ut pulverem ante faciem venti; And I will crush them into dust before the face of the wind,ut lutum platearum delebo eos.so that I will obliterate them like the mud in the streets.
Eripies me de contradictionibus populi; You will rescue me from the contradictions of the people.constitues me in caput gentium. You will set me at the head of the Gentiles.
Populus quem non cognovi servivit mihi;A people I did not know has served me.in auditu auris obedivit mihi.As soon as their ears heard, they were obedient to me.
Filii alieni mentiti sunt mihi,The sons of foreigners have been deceitful to me,filii alieni inveterati sunt, the sons of foreigners have grown weak with time,et claudicaverunt a semitis suis.and they have wavered from their paths.
Vivit Dominus,The Lord lives,et benedictus Deus meus, and blessed is my God,et exaltetur Deus salutis meæ.and may the God of my salvation be exalted:
Deus qui das vindictas mihi,O God,et subdis populos sub me;who vindicates me and who subdues the people under me,liberator meus de inimicis meis iracundis.my liberator from my enraged enemies.
Et ab insurgentibus in me exaltabis me;And you will exalt me above those who rise up against me.a viro iniquo eripies me.From the iniquitous man, you will rescue me.
Propterea confitebor tibi in nationibus,Because of this, O Lord, I will confess to you among the nations,Domine, et nomini tuo psalmum dicam;and I will compose a psalm to your name:
magnificans salutes regis ejus, magnifying the salvation of his king,et faciens misericordiam christo suo David, and showing mercy to David, his Christ,et semini ejus usque in sæculum.and to his offspring, even for all time.
