Cumque venissent David et viri ejus in Siceleg die tertia,And when David and his men had arrived at Ziklag on the third day,Amalecitæ impetum fecerant ex parte australi in Siceleg, the Amalekites had made an attack on the south side against Ziklag.et percusserant Siceleg,And they had struck Ziklag,et succenderant eam igni.and burned it with fire.

Et captivas duxerant mulieres ex ea,And they had led the women in it away as captives,a minimo usque ad magnum:from the small to the great.et non interfecerant quemquam,And they had not killed anyone, sed secum duxerant, but they led them away with them.et pergebant itinere suo.And then they traveled on their journey.

Cum ergo venissent David et viri ejus ad civitatem,Therefore, when David and his men had arrived at the city,et invenissent eam succensam igni, and had found it burned with fire,et uxores suas, et filios suos et filias, ductas esse captivas, and that their wives and their sons and daughters had been led away as captives,

levaverunt David et populus qui erat cum eo voces suas,David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices.et planxerunt donec deficerent in eis lacrimæ.And they mourned until the tears in them failed.

Siquidem et duæ uxores David captivæ ductæ fuerant,For indeed, the two wives of David also had been led away as captives:Achinoam Jezrahelites,Ahinoam, the Jezreelite,et Abigail uxor Nabal Carmeli.and Abigail, the wife of Nabal of Carmel.

Et contristatus est David valde:And David was greatly saddened.volebat enim eum populus lapidare,And the people were willing to stone him, quia amara erat anima uniuscujusque viri super filiis suis et filiabus:because the soul of every man was bitter over his sons and daughters.confortatus est autem David in Domino Deo suo.But David was strengthened by the Lord his God.

Et ait ad Abiathar sacerdotem filium Achimelech:And he said to the priest Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech,Applica ad me ephod.“Bring the ephod to me.”Et applicavit Abiathar ephod ad David. And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.

Et consuluit David Dominum,And David consulted the Lord, dicens:saying,Persequar latrunculos hos,“Shall I pursue these robbers,et comprehendam eos,and will I overtake them,an non?or not?”Dixitque ei Dominus:And the Lord said to him:Persequere:“Pursue.absque dubio enim comprehendes eos,For without doubt,et excuties prædam.you will overtake them and find the prey.”

Abiit ergo David,Therefore, David went away, ipse et sexcenti viri qui erant cum eo,he and the six hundred men who were with him,et venerunt usque ad torrentem Besor:and they arrived as far as the torrent Besor.et lassi quidam substiterunt. And certain ones, being weary, stayed there.

Persecutus est autem David ipse, et quadringenti viri:But David pursued, he and four hundred men.substiterant enim ducenti,For two hundred stayed, who,qui lassi transire non poterant torrentem Besor.being weary, were not able to cross the torrent Besor.

Et invenerunt virum ægyptium in agro,And they found an Egyptian man in the field,et adduxerunt eum ad David:and they led him to David.dederuntque ei panem ut comederet,And they gave him bread, so that he might eat, and water,et biberet aquam,so that he might drink,

sed et fragmen massæ caricarum, and also a section of a mass of dried figs,et duas ligaturas uvæ passæ.and two clusters of dried grapes.Quæ cum comedisset,And when he had eaten, reversus est spiritus ejus, his spirit returned,et refocillatus est:and he was refreshed.non enim comederat panem,For he had not eaten bread, neque biberat aquam, nor drank water, tribus diebus et tribus noctibus.for three days and three nights.

Dixit itaque ei David:And so David said to him:Cujus es tu?“To whom do you belong?vel unde?Or where are you from?et quo pergis? And where are you going?”Qui ait:And he said:Puer ægyptius ego sum,“I am a young man of Egypt, servus viri Amalecitæ:the servant of an Amalekite man.dereliquit autem me dominus meus,But my lord abandoned me,quia ægrotare cœpi nudiustertius.because I began to be sick the day before yesterday.

Siquidem nos erupimus ad australem plagam Cerethi,For indeed, we broke forth to the southern side of Cherethi,et contra Judam, and against Judah,et ad meridiem Caleb, and to the south of Caleb,et Siceleg succendimus igni.and we burned Ziklag with fire.”

Dixitque ei David:And David said to him,Potes me ducere ad cuneum istum?“Are you able to lead me to this battle line?”Qui ait:And he said,Jura mihi per Deum quod non occidas me,“Swear to me by God that you will not kill me,et non tradas me in manus domini mei,and that you will not deliver me into the hands of my lord,et ego ducam te ad cuneum istum.and I will lead you to this battle line.”Et juravit ei David. And David swore to him.

Qui cum duxisset eum,And when he had led him, ecce illi discumbebant super faciem universæ terræ comedentesbehold,et bibentes, they were stretched out on the face of the land everywhere,et quasi festum celebrantes diem, eating and drinking and celebrating, pro cuncta prædaas if it were a feast day,et spoliis quæ ceperant de terra Philisthiimbecause of all the prey and spoils that they had taken from the land of the Philistines,et de terra Juda.and from the land of Judah.

Et percussit eos David a vespere usque ad vesperam alterius diei,And David struck them down from evening until the evening of the next day.et non evasit ex eis quisquam,And no one among them escaped, nisi quadringenti viri adolescentes, except four hundred youths, qui ascenderant camelos et fugerant.who had climbed on camels and fled.

Eruit ergo David omnia quæ tulerant Amalecitæ,Therefore, David rescued all that the Amalekites had taken,et duas uxores suas eruit.and he rescued his two wives.

Nec defuit quidquam a parvo usque ad magnum,And nothing was missing, from small even to great, tam de filiis quam de filiabus, among the sons and daughters, and among the spoils,et de spoliis, et quæcumque rapuerant:and among everything whatsoever that they had seized.omnia reduxit David.David returned it all.

Et tulit universos greges et armenta,And he took all the flocks and the herds,et minavit ante faciem suam:and he drove them before his face.dixeruntque:And they said,Hæc est præda David.“This is the prey of David.”

Venit autem David ad ducentos viros qui lassi substiterant,Then David arrived at the two hundred men, who, being weary, nec sequi potuerant David, had stayed, for they had not been able to follow David,et residere eos jusserat in torrente Besor:and he had ordered them to remain at the torrent Besor.qui egressi sunt obviam David et populo qui erat cum eo.And they went out to meet David, and the people who were with him.Accedens autem David ad populum,Then David, drawing near to the people, salutavit eos pacifice.greeted them peacefully.

Respondensque omnis vir pessimusAnd all the wicked and iniquitous men,et iniquus de viris qui ierant cum David, out of the men who had gone with David, dixit:responding,Quia non venerunt nobiscum, said:non dabimus eis quidquam de præda quam eruimus:“Since they did not go with us,sed sufficiat unicuique uxor suawe will not give to them anything from the prey that we have rescued.et filii:But let his wife and children be enough for each of them;quos cum acceperint, when they have accepted this, recedant.they may go back.”

Dixit autem David: Non sic facietis,But David said: “You shall not do this, fratres mei,my brothers,de his quæ tradidit nobis Dominus, with these things that the Lord has delivered to us,et custodivit nos,for he has preserved us,et dedit latrunculos qui eruperant adversum nos, in manus nostras:and he has given into our hands the robbers who broke out among us.

nec audiet vos quisquam super sermone hoc:And so, let no one heed you over these words.æqua enim pars erit descendentis ad prælium,But equal shall be the portion of him who descended to the battle,et remanentis ad sarcinas, and of him who remained with the supplies,et similiter divident.and they will divide it alike.”

Et factum est hoc ex die illa et deinceps,And this has been done from that day and thereafter.constitutum et præfinitum,And it was established as a statute,et quasi lex in Israël usque in diem hanc.and as if a law, in Israel even to this day.

Venit ergo David in Siceleg,Then David went to Ziklag,et misit dona de præda senioribus Juda proximis suis, and he sent gifts from the prey to the elders of Judah, his neighbors, dicens:saying,Accipite benedictionem de præda hostium Domini:“Receive a blessing from the prey of the enemies of the Lord,”
