Factum est autem post hæc ut Absalom filii David sororem speciosissimam, vocabulo Thamar, adamaret Amnon filius David,Now after these things, it happened that Amnon, the son of David, was in love with the very beautiful sister of Absalom, the son of David, and she was called Tamar.
et deperiret eam valde,And he pined for her exceedingly, ita ut propter amorem ejus ægrotaret:so much so that, out of love for her, he became ill.quia cum esset virgo,For, since she was a virgin, difficile ei videbatur ut quippiam inhoneste ageret cum ea.it seemed a difficulty to him that he would do anything dishonest with her.
Erat autem Amnon amicus nomine Jonadab,Now Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, filius Semmaa fratris David, the son of Shimeah, the brother of David:vir prudens valde.a very prudent man.
Qui dixit ad eum:And he said to him:Quare sic attenuaris macie,“Why are you becoming so thin from day to day, fili regis,O son of the king?per singulos dies? Why won’t you tell me?”cur non indicas mihi? And Amnon said to him,Dixitque ei Amnon:“I am in love with Tamar,Thamar sororem fratris mei Absalom amo.the sister of my brother Absalom.”
Cui respondit Jonadab:And Jonadab said to him:Cuba super lectum tuum,“Lie down upon your bed,et languorem simula:and feign sickness.cumque venerit pater tuus ut visitet te,And when your father will come to visit you,dic ei:say to him:Veniat, oro, Thamar soror mea,‘I ask you to let my sister Tamar come to me,ut det mihi cibum,so that she may give me food,et faciat pulmentum, and may make a small meal,ut comedam de manu ejus.so that I may eat it from her hand.’”
Accubuit itaque Amnon,And so, Amnon lay down,et quasi ægrotare cœpit:and he began to act as if he were ill.cumque venisset rex ad visitandum eum,And when the king had come to visit him,ait Amnon ad regem:Amnon said to the king,Veniat, obsecro, Thamar soror mea,“I beg you to let my sister Tamar come to me,ut faciat in oculis meis duas sorbitiunculas, and make in my sight two little portions of food,et cibum capiam de manu ejus.so that I take it from her hand.”
Misit ergo David ad Thamar domum,Therefore, David sent home to Tamar, dicens:saying,Veni in domum Amnon fratris tui,“Come to the house of your brother Amnon,et fac ei pulmentum.and make a small meal for him.”
Venitque Thamar in domum Amnon fratris sui:And Tamar went into the house of her brother Amnon.ille autem jacebat. But he was lying down.Quæ tollens farinam commiscuit,And taking flour, she mixed it.et liquefaciens, in oculis ejus coxit sorbitiunculas. And dissolving it in his sight, she cooked little portions of food.
Tollensque quod coxerat,And taking what she had cooked, effudit, she poured it out,et posuit coram eo,and she set it before him.et noluit comedere:But he refused to eat.dixitque Amnon:And Amnon said,Ejicite universos a me.“Send everyone away from me.”Cumque ejecissent omnes,And when they had sent everyone away,
dixit Amnon ad Thamar:Amnon said to Tamar,Infer cibum in conclave,“Bring the food into the bedroom,ut vescar de manu tua.so that I may eat from your hand.”Tulit ergo Thamar sorbitiunculas quas fecerat,Therefore, Tamar took the little portions of food that she had made,et intulit ad Amnon fratrem suum in conclave.and she brought them to her brother Amnon in the bedroom.
Cumque obtulisset ei cibum,And when she had presented the food to him, apprehendit eam,he took hold of her,et ait:and he said,Veni, cuba mecum,“Come lie with me,soror mea.my sister.”
Quæ respondit ei:She answered him:Noli frater mi,“Do not do so,noli opprimere me:my brother! Do not force me.neque enim hoc fas est in Israël:For no such thing must be done in Israel.noli facere stultitiam hanc.Do not choose to do this senseless act.
Ego enim ferre non potero opprobrium meum,For I will not be able to bear my shame.et tu eris quasi unus de insipientibus in Israël:And you will be like one of the foolish in Israel.quin potius loquere ad regem,For it is better to speak to the king,et non negabit me tibi.and he will not deny me to you.”
Noluit autem acquiescere precibus ejus,But he was not willing to agree to her petition.sed prævalens viribus oppressit eam,Instead, prevailing by strength, he forced her,et cubavit cum ea.and he lay with her.
Et exosam eam habuit Amnon odio magno nimis:And Amnon held hatred for her with an exceedingly great hatred, ita ut majus esset odium quo oderat eam, amore quo ante dilexerat.so much so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her before.Dixitque ei Amnon:And Amnon said to her,Surge,“Rise up,et vade.and go away.”
Quæ respondit ei:And she answered him,Majus est hoc malum quod nunc agis adversum me,“This evil is greater, quam quod ante fecisti, which you are now doing against me in driving me away, expellens me.than what you did before.”Et noluit audire eam:But he was not willing to listen to her.
sed vocato puero qui ministrabat ei,Instead, calling the servants who were ministering to him, dixit:he said,Ejice hanc a me foras,“Cast this woman out from me,et claude ostium post eam.and close the door behind her.”
Quæ induta erat talari tunica:Now she was clothed with an ankle-length robe.hujuscemodi enim filiæ regis virgines vestibus utebantur. For the virgin daughters of the king made use of this kind of garment.Ejecit itaque eam minister illius foras:And so, his servant cast her out, clausitque fores post eam.and he closed the door behind her.
Quæ aspergens cinerem capiti suo,And she sprinkled ashes upon her head, scissa talari tunica, and she tore her ankle-length robe.impositisque manibus super caput suum,And placing her hands upon her head, ibat ingrediens, she went forth,et clamans.walking and crying out.
Dixit autem ei Absalom frater suus:Then her brother Absalom said to her:Numquid Amnon frater tuus concubuit tecum?“Has your brother Amnon lain with you? But now,sed nunc soror, sister, be quiet.tace: frater tuus est:For he is your brother.neque affligas cor tuum pro hac re.And you should not afflict your heart because of this matter.”Mansit itaque Thamar contabescens in domo Absalom fratris sui.And so, Tamar remained, wasting away in the house of her brother Absalom.
Cum autem audisset rex David verba hæc,And when king David had heard about these things, contristatus est valde:he was deeply grieved.et noluit contristare spiritum Amnon filii sui,But he was not willing to afflict the spirit of his son Amnon.quoniam diligebat eum,For he loved him, quia primogenitus erat ei.since he was his firstborn.
Porro non est locutus Absalom ad Amnon nec malum nec bonum:Yet Absalom did not speak to Amnon, oderat enim Absalom Amnon, neither good nor evil.eo quod violasset Thamar sororem suam. For Absalom hated Amnon because he had violated his sister Tamar.
Factum est autem post tempus biennii ut tonderentur oves Absalom in Baalhasor,Then, after the time of two years, it happened that the sheep of Absalom were being shorn in Baal-hazor,quæ est juxta Ephraim:which is near Ephraim.et vocavit Absalom omnes filios regis,And Absalom invited all the sons of the king.
venitque ad regem,And he went to the king,et ait ad eum:and he said to him:Ecce tondentur oves servi tui:“Behold, the sheep of your servant are being shorn.veniat, oro,I ask that the king, rex cum servis suis ad servum suum.with his servants, may come to his servant.”
Dixitque rex ad Absalom:And the king said to Absalom:Noli fili mi,“Do not, my son, noli rogare ut veniamus omnes et gravemus te.do not choose to ask that we may all come and be a burden to you.”Cum autem cogeret eum,Then, after he urged him,et noluisset ire,and he had refused to go,benedixit ei.he blessed him.
Et ait Absalom:And Absalom said,Si non vis venire, veniat,“If you are not willing to come, obsecro,I beg you, nobiscum saltem Amnon frater meus.at least let my brother Amnon come with us.”Dixitque ad eum rex:And the king said to him,Non est necesse ut vadat tecum.“It is not necessary that he go with you.”
Coëgit itaque Absalom eum,But Absalom pressed him,et dimisit cum eo Amnonand so he sent with him Amnon and all the sons of the king.et universos filios regis. And Absalom made a feast,Feceratque Absalom convivium quasi convivium regis.like the feast of a king.
Præceperat autem Absalom pueris suis,Then Absalom commanded his servants, dicens:saying:Observate cum temulentus fuerit Amnon vino,“Observe when Amnon will have become drunk with wine.et dixero vobis:And when I say to you,Percutite eum,‘Strikeet interficite:and kill him!’nolite timere:do not be afraid.ego enim sum qui præcipio vobis:For it is I who commands you.roboramini,Be stronget estote viri fortes.and valiant men.”
Fecerunt ergo pueri Absalom adversum Amnon sicut præceperat eis Absalom. Therefore, the servants of Absalom acted against Amnon, just as Absalom had commanded them.Surgentesque omnes filii regis ascenderunt singuli mulas suas, et fugerunt. And all the sons of the king rose up, and each one climbed upon his mule and fled.
Cumque adhuc pergerent in itinere,And while they were still traveling on the journey, fama pervenit ad David,a rumor reached David, dicens:saying,Percussit Absalom omnes filios regis,“Absalom has struck down all the sons of the king,et non remansit ex eis saltem unus.and there is not one of them remaining.”
Surrexit itaque rex,And so the king rose up,et scidit vestimenta sua,and he tore his garments,et cecidit super terram:and he fell upon the ground.et omnes servi illius qui assistebant ei,And all his servants, who were standing near him, sciderunt vestimenta sua.tore their garments.
Respondens autem Jonadab filius Semmaa fratris David,But Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, dixit:responding,Ne æstimet dominus meus rex quod omnes pueri filii regis occisi sint:said: “My lord the king should not consider that all the sons of the king have been slain.Amnon solus mortuus est,Amnon alone is dead.quoniam in ore Absalom erat positus ex die qua oppressit Thamar sororem ejus. For he was set against by the mouth of Absalom from the day that he raped his sister Tamar.
Nunc ergo ne ponat dominus meus rex super cor suum verbum istud,Now therefore, let not my lord the king set this word in his heart, dicens:saying,Omnes filii regis occisi sunt: quoniam Amnon solus mortuus est.‘All the sons of the king have been slain.’ For only Amnon is dead.”
Fugit autem Absalom. Now Absalom fled.Et elevavit puer speculator oculos suos, et aspexit:And the young man keeping watch, lifted up his eyes and gazed out.et ecce populus multus veniebat per iter devium ex latere montis. And behold, many people were arriving along a remote road at the side of the mountain.
Dixit autem Jonadab ad regem:And Jonadab said to the king: “Behold,Ecce filii regis adsunt:the sons of the king are here.juxta verbum servi tui,In accord with the word of your servant, sic factum est.so it has happened.”
Cumque cessasset loqui,And when he had ceased speaking, apparueruntthe sons of the king also appeared.et filii regis:And entering,et intrantes levaverunt vocem suam, they lifted up their voice,et fleverunt:and they wept.sedAnd the king also,et rexand all his servants,et omnes servi ejus fleverunt ploratu magno nimis.wept with an exceedingly great weeping.
Porro Absalom fugiens abiit ad Tholomai filium Ammiud regem Gessur. Luxit ergo David filium suum cunctis diebus. But Absalom, fleeing, went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. Then David mourned for his son every day.
Absalom autem cum fugisset,Now after he had fled and had arrived in Geshur, Absalom was in that place for three years.et venisset in Gessur,And king David ceased to pursue Absalom, fuit ibi tribus annis.because he had been consoled over the passing of Amnon.
Cessavitque rex David persequi Absalom, eo quod consolatus esset super Amnon interitu.
