Nuntiavit autem Achab Jezabel omnia quæ fecerat Elias,Then Ahab reported to Jezebel all that Elijah had done,et quomodo occidisset universos prophetas gladio.and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
Misitque Jezabel nuntium ad Eliam,And so Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, dicens:saying,Hæc mihi faciant dii,“May the gods do these things,et hæc addant, and may they add these other things, nisi hac hora cras posuero animam tuam sicut animam unius ex illis.if by this hour tomorrow I will not have made your life like the life of one of them.”
Timuit ergo Elias,Therefore, Elijah was afraid.et surgens abiit quocumque eum ferebat voluntas:And rising up, he went away to wherever his will would carry him.venitque in Bersabee Juda,And he arrived in Beersheba of Judah.et dimisit ibi puerum suum,And he dismissed his servant there.
et perrexit in desertum,And he continued on, into the desert, viam unius diei.for one day’s journey.Cumque venisset,And when he had arrived,et sederet subter unam juniperum, and was sitting under a juniper tree, petivit animæ suæ ut moreretur, et ait:he requested for his soul that he might die.Sufficit mihi,And he said:Domine: tolle animam meam:“It is enough for me, O Lord.neque enim melior sum quam patres mei.Take my soul. For I am no better than my fathers.”
Projecitque se,And he stretched himself out,et obdormivit in umbra juniperi:and he slept deeply in the shadow of the juniper tree.et ecce angelus Domini tetigit eum,And behold,et dixit illi:an Angel of the Lord touched him,Surge, and said to him,et comede.“Rise up and eat.”
Respexit,He looked,et ecce ad caput suum subcinericius panis, and behold,et vas aquæ:at his head was bread baked under ashes, comedit ergo, and a container of water.et bibit,Then he ate and drank,et rursum obdormivit.and again he slept deeply.
Reversusque est angelus Domini secundo,And the Angel of the Lord returned a second time,et tetigit eum,and touched him, dixitque illi:and said to him:Surge,“Rise up,comede:eat.grandis enim tibi restat via.For a great journey again stands before you.”
Qui cum surrexisset,And he when he had risen up,comedithe ate and drank.et bibit,And he walked by the strength of that food for forty days and forty nights,et ambulavit in fortitudine cibi illius quadraginta diebusas far as the mountain of God,et quadraginta noctibus usque ad montem Dei Horeb.Horeb.
Cumque venisset illuc,And when he had arrived there, mansit in spelunca:he stayed in a cave. And behold,et ecce sermo Domini ad eum,the word of the Lord came to him, dixitque illi: Quid hic agis, and said to him, “What are you doing here,Elia?Elijah?”
At ille respondit:And he responded:Zelo zelatus sum pro Domino Deo exercituum,“I have been very zealous on behalf of the Lord, the God of hosts.quia dereliquerunt pactum tuum filii Israël:For the sons of Israel have forsaken your covenant.altaria tua destruxerunt,They have torn down your altars.prophetas tuos occiderunt gladio, derelictus sum ego solus,They have killed your prophets with the sword. I alone remain.et quærunt animam meam ut auferant eam.And they are seeking my life, so that they may take it away.”
Et ait ei:And he said to him,Egredere,“Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.”et sta in monte coram Domino:And behold,et ecce Dominus transit.the Lord passed by.Et spiritus grandisAnd there was a great and strong wind,et fortis subvertens montes, tearing apart the mountains,et conterens petras, and crushing the rocks before the Lord.ante Dominum:But the Lord was not in the wind.non in spiritu Dominus. And after the wind,Et post spiritum commotio:there was an earthquake.non in commotione Dominus. But the Lord was not in the earthquake.
Et post commotionem ignis:And after the earthquake, there was a fire.non in igne Dominus. But the Lord was not in the fire.Et post ignem sibilus auræ tenuis. And after the fire, there was the whisper of a gentle breeze.
Quod cum audisset Elias,And when Elijah had heard it,operuit vultum suum pallio,he covered his face with his cloak,et egressus stetit in ostio speluncæ.and going out, he stood at the entrance of the cave.Et ecce vox ad eum dicens:And behold, there was a voice to him,Quid hic agis, Elia?saying: “What are you doing here,Et ille respondit:Elijah?” And he responded:
Zelo zelatus sum pro Domino Deo exercituum,“I have been very zealous on behalf of the Lord, the God of hosts.quia dereliquerunt pactum tuum filii Israël:For the sons of Israel have forsaken your covenant.altaria tua destruxerunt,They have torn down your altars.prophetas tuos occiderunt gladio, derelictus sum ego solus,They have killed your prophets with the sword. I alone remain.et quærunt animam meam ut auferant eam.And they are seeking my life, so that they may take it away.”
Et ait Dominus ad eum:And the Lord said to him:Vade,“Go,et revertere in viam tuam per desertum in Damascum:and return on your way, through the desert, to Damascus.cumque perveneris illuc,And when you have arrived there, unges Hazaël regem super Syriam, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Syria.
et Jehu filium Namsi unges regem super Israël:And you shall anoint Jehu, the son of Nimshi, as king over Israel.Eliseum autem filium Saphat,But Elisha, the son of Shaphat, qui est de Abelmehula, unges prophetam pro te.who is from Abelmeholah, you shall anoint to be a prophet in your place.
Et erit:And this shall be:quicumque fugerit gladium Hazaël,whoever will have escaped from the sword of Hazael, occidet eum Jehu:will be slain by Jehu.et quicumque fugerit gladium Jehu,And whoever will have escaped from the sword of Jehu, interficiet eum Eliseus.will be put to death by Elisha.
Et derelinquam mihi in Israël septem millia virorum,And I will leave for myself seven thousand men in Israel, quorum genua non sunt incurvata ante Baal, whose knees have not been bent before Baal,et omne os quod non adoravit eum osculans manus.and every mouth that has not adored him, kissing hands.”
Profectus ergo inde Elias,Therefore, Elijah, setting out from there, reperit Eliseum filium Saphat, found Elisha, the son of Shaphat, arantem in duodecim jugis boum.plowing with twelve yoke of oxen.Et ipse in duodecim jugis boum arantibus unus erat:And he himself was one of those who were plowing with the twelve yoke of oxen.cumque venisset Elias ad eum,And when Elijah had gone to him, misit pallium suum super illum.he cast his mantle over him.
Qui statim relictis bobus cucurrit post Eliam,And immediately,et ait:leaving behind the oxen,Osculer,he ran after Elijah.oro,And he said, patrem meum,“I beg you to let me kiss my fatheret matrem meam, and my mother,et sic sequar te.and then I will follow you.”Dixitque ei:And he said to him:Vade,“Go,et revertere:and turn back.quod enim meum erat,For what was mine to do,feci tibi.I have done concerning you.”
Reversus autem ab eo,Then, turning back from him, tulit par boum,he took a pair of oxen,et mactavit illud, et in aratro boum coxit carnes, and he slew them. And he cooked the flesh with the plow of the oxen.et dedit populo, et comederunt:And he gave it to the people, consurgensque abiit, and they ate. And rising up,et secutus est Eliam,he went and followed Elijah,et ministrabat ei.and he ministered to him.
