Tunc congregati sunt omnes majores natu Israël cum principibus tribuum, et duces familiarum filiorum Israël,Then all those greater by birth of Israel, with the leaders of the tribes and the rulers of the families of the sons of Israel,ad regem Salomonem in Jerusalem, gathered together before king Solomon at Jerusalem,ut deferrent arcam fœderis Domini de civitate David,so that they might carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, from the city of David,id est, that is,de Sion.from Zion.

Convenitque ad regem Salomonem universus Israël in mense Ethanim,And all of Israel assembled before king Solomon,in solemni die:on the solemn day in the month of Ethanim, ipse est mensis septimus.which is the seventh month.

Veneruntque cuncti senes de Israël,And all the elders of Israel arrived,et tulerunt arcam sacerdotes, and the priests took up the ark.

et portaverunt arcam Domini,And they carried the ark of the Lord,et tabernaculum fœderis, and the tabernacle of the covenant,et omnia vasa sanctuarii quæ erant in tabernaculo:and all the vessels of the Sanctuary,et ferebant ea sacerdoteswhich were in the tabernacle;et Levitæ.and the priests and the Levites carried these.

Rex autem Salomon,Then king Solomon,et omnis multitudo Israël quæ convenerat ad eum,and the entire multitude of Israel, gradiebatur cum illo ante arcam, who had assembled before him,et immolabant ovesadvanced with him before the ark.et boves absque æstimationeAnd they immolated sheep and oxen,et numero.which could not be numbered or estimated.

Et intulerunt sacerdotes arcam fœderis Domini in locum suum,And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place,in oraculum templi, into the oracle of the temple,in Sanctum sanctorum,in the Holy of Holies, subter alas cherubim.under the wings of the cherubim.

Siquidem cherubim expandebant alas super locum arcæ,For indeed,et protegebant arcam, the cherubim extended their wings over the place of the ark,et vectes ejus desuper.and they protected the ark and its bars from above.

Cumque eminerent vectes,And since the bars projected outward,et apparerent summitates eorum foris sanctuarium ante oraculum, their ends were visible from without, non apparebant ultra extrinsecus,in the Sanctuary before the oracle;quibut they were not visible farther outward.et fuerunt ibi usque in præsentem diem. And they have been in that place even to the present day.

In arca autem non erat aliud nisi duæ tabulæ lapideæ quas posuerat in ea Moyses in Horeb,Now inside the ark, there was nothing other than the two tablets of stone, which Moses had placed in it at Horeb, quando pepigit Dominus fœdus cum filiis Israël,when the Lord formed a covenant with the sons of Israel, cum egrederentur de terra Ægypti.when they departed from the land of Egypt.

Factum est autem cum exissent sacerdotes de sanctuario,Then it happened that, when the priests had exited from the Sanctuary, nebula implevit domum Domini,a cloud filled the house of the Lord.

et non poterant sacerdotes stareAnd the priests were unable to stand and minister,et ministrare propter nebulam:because of the cloud.impleverat enim gloria Domini domum Domini. For the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord.

Tunc ait Salomon:Then Solomon said:Dominus dixit ut habitaret in nebula.“The Lord has said that he would dwell in a cloud.

Ædificans ædificavi domum in habitaculum tuum:Building, I have built a house as your dwelling place, firmissimum solium tuum in sempiternum.your most firm throne forever.”

Convertitque rex faciem suam,And the king turned his face,et benedixit omni ecclesiæ Israël:and he blessed the entire assembly of Israel.omnia enim ecclesia Israël stabat. For the entire assembly of Israel was standing.

Et ait Salomon:And Solomon said:Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël,“Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, qui locutus est ore suo ad David patrem meum, who spoke with his mouth to my father David, and who,et in manibus ejus perfecit, with his own hands, has perfected it,dicens:saying:

A die qua eduxi populum meum Israël de Ægypto,‘From the day when I led my people Israel away from Egypt, non elegi civitatem de universis tribubus Israël,I did not choose any city out of all the tribes of Israel,ut ædificaretur domus,so that a house would be built,et esset nomen meum ibi:and so that my name might be there.sed elegi David ut esset super populum meum Israël.Instead, I chose David to be over my people Israel.’

Voluitque David pater meus ædificare domum nomini Domini Dei Israël:And my father David wanted to build a house to the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.

et ait Dominus ad David patrem meum:But the Lord said to my father David:Quod cogitasti in corde tuo ædificare domum nomini meo,‘Since you have planned in your heart to build a house to my name, bene fecisti, hoc ipsum mente tractans.you have done well by considering this plan in your mind.

Verumtamen tu non ædificabis mihi domum,Yet truly, you shall not build a house for me.sed filius tuus,Instead, your son,qui egredietur de renibus tuis, who shall go forth from your loins, ipse ædificabit domum nomini meo.he himself shall build a house to my name.’

Confirmavit Dominus sermonem suum quem locutus est: stetique pro David patre meo,The Lord has confirmed his word which he spoke. And so I stand in place of my father David,et sedi super thronum Israël,and I sit upon the throne of Israel, sicut locutus est Dominus:just as the Lord said.et ædificavi domum nomini Domini Dei Israël.And I have built a house to the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.

Et constitui ibi locum arcæ in qua fœdus Domini est,And there I have appointed a place for the ark, quod percussit cum patribus nostris quando egressi sunt de terra Ægypti.in which is the covenant of the Lord that he struck with our fathers, when they went forth from the land of Egypt.”

Stetit autem Salomon ante altare Domini in conspectu ecclesiæ Israël,Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord, in the sight of the assembly of Israel,et expandit manus suas in cælum, and he extended his hands toward heaven.

et ait:And he said:Domine Deus Israël,“Lord God of Israel, non est similis tui deus in cælo desuper, there is no God like you, in heaven above,et super terram deorsum:nor on the earth below.qui custodis pactum et misericordiam servis tuis qui ambulant coram te in toto corde suo.You preserve covenant and mercy with your servants, who walk before you with all their heart.

Qui custodisti servo tuo David patri meo quæ locutus es ei: ore locutus es, et manibus perfecisti, ut hæc dies probat. You have fulfilled, for your servant David, my father, that which you said to him. With your mouth, you spoke; and with your hands, you completed; just as this day proves.

Nunc igitur Domine Deus Israël,Now therefore, O Lord God of Israel, fulfill, conserva famulo tuo David patri meo quæ locutus es ei,for your servant David, my father, that which you spoke to him, dicens:saying,Non auferetur de te vir coram me,‘There shall not be taken away from you a man before me,qui sedeat super thronum Israël:who may sit upon the throne of Israel, ita tamen si custodierint filii tui viam suam,if only your sons will guard their way,ut ambulent coram me sicut tu ambulasti in conspectu meo.so that they walk before me, just as you have walked in my sight.’

Et nunc Domine Deus Israël,And now, O Lord God of Israel, firmentur verba tua quæ locutus es servo tuo David patri meo.establish your words, which you spoke to your servant David, my father.

Ergone putandum est quod vere Deus habitet super terram? Is it, then, to be understood that truly God would dwell upon the earth?si enim cælum, et cæli cælorum,For if heaven, and the heavens of heavens,te capere non possunt, are not able to contain you, quanto magis domus hæc,how much less this house, quam ædificavi?which I have built?

Sed respice ad orationem servi tui,Yet look with favor upon the prayer of your servant and upon his petitions,et ad preces ejus,O Lord,Domine Deus meus:my God.audi hymnumListen to the hymn and the prayer,et orationem quam servus tuus orat coram te hodie:which your servant prays before you this day,

ut sint oculi tui aperti super domum hanc nocte ac die:so that your eyes may be open over this house, super domum, night and day,de qua dixisti:over the house about which you said,Erit nomen meum ibi:‘My name shall be there,’ut exaudias orationem quam orat in loco isto ad te servus tuus:so that you may heed the prayer that your servant is praying in this place to you.

ut exaudias deprecationem servi tui et populi tui Israël,So may you heed the supplication of your servant and of your people Israel, quodcumque oraverint in loco isto, whatever they will pray for in this place,et exaudies in loco habitaculi tui in cælo:and so may you heed them in your dwelling place in heaven.et cum exaudieris,And when you heed, propitius eris.you will be gracious.

Si peccaverit homo in proximum suum,But if any man sins against his neighbor,et habuerit aliquod juramentum quo teneatur astrictus, and he has any kind of an oath by which he is bound,et venerit propter juramentum coram altari tuo in domum tuam, and he arrives because of the oath, before your altar in your house,

tu exaudies in cælo:you will hear in heaven,et facies, and you will actet judicabis servos tuos, and judge your servants, condemnans impium, condemning the impious,et reddens viam suam super caput ejus, and repaying his own way upon his own head, justificansque justum, but justifying the just,et retribuens ei secundum justitiam suam.and rewarding him in accord with his justice.

Si fugerit populus tuus Israël inimicos suos (quia peccaturus est tibi), et agentes pœnitentiam,And if your people Israel will have fled from their enemies, because they have sinned against you,et confitentes nomini tuo, venerint, and doing penance and confessing to your name,et oraverint, et deprecati te fuerint in domo hac:shall arrive and pray and petition you in this house,

exaudi in cælo,listen in heaven,et dimitte peccatum populi tui Israël,and forgive the sin of your people Israel,et reduces eos in terram quam dedisti patribus eorum.and lead them back to the land, which you gave to their fathers.

Si clausum fuerit cælum,And if the heavens have closed,et non pluerit propter peccata eorum,so that there is no rain, because of their sins,et orantes in loco isto, and they, praying in this place,pœnitentiam egerint nomini tuo, shall do penance to your name,et a peccatis suis conversi fuerint propter afflictionem suam:and shall be converted from their sins, by occasion of their afflictions,

exaudi eos in cælo,hear them from heaven,et dimitte peccata servorum tuorum, and forgive the sins of your servants and of your people Israel.et populi tui Israël:And reveal to them the good way,et ostende eis viam bonam per quam ambulent, along which they should walk,et da pluviam super terram tuam, and grant rain upon your land, quam dedisti populo tuo in possessionem.which you have given to your people as a possession.

Fames si oborta fuerit in terra,Then, if famine rises over the land, aut pestilentia,or pestilence, aut corruptus aër,or corrupt air,aut ærugo,or blight, aut locusta,or locust, vel rubigo,or mildew,et afflixerit eum inimicus ejus portas obsidens: omnis plaga,or if their enemy afflicts them, besieging the gates, universa infirmitas,or any harm or infirmity,

cuncta devotatio,or whatever curse or divine intervention may happen to any man among your people Israel,et imprecatio quæ acciderit omni homini de populo tuo Israël:if anyone understands,si quis cognoverit plagam cordis sui, having been wounded in his heart,et expanderit manus suas in domo hac,and if he will have extended his hands in this house,

tu exaudies in cælo in loco habitationis tuæ,you will hear in heaven, in your dwelling place,et repropitiaberis, and you will forgive.et facies ut des unicuique secundum omnes vias suas,And you will act so that you give to each one in accord with his own ways, sicut videris cor ejus (quia tu nosti solus cor omnium filiorum hominum),just as you see in his heart, for you alone know the heart of all the sons of men.

ut timeant te cunctis diebus quibus vivunt super faciem terræ quam dedisti patribus nostris. So may they fear you, all the days that they live upon the face of the land, which you have given to our fathers.

InsuperMoreover,et alienigena, the foreigner too,qui non est de populo tuo Israël,who is not of your people Israel, cum venerit de terra longinqua propter nomen tuum (audietur enim nomen tuum magnum, when he will have arrived from a distant land because of your name,et manus tua fortis, for they shall hear about your great name,et brachium tuumand your strong hand,

extentum ubique),and your outstretched arm everywhere:cum venerit ergo,so when he arriveset oraverit in hoc loco, and prays in this place,

tu exaudies in cælo,you will listen in heaven,in firmamento habitaculi tui,in the firmament of your dwelling place.et facies omnia pro quibus invocaverit te alienigena:And you will do all the things, for which that foreigner will have called upon you.ut discant universi populi terrarum nomen tuum timere,So may all the peoples of the earth learn to fear your name, sicut populus tuus Israël,just as your people Israel do.et probent quia nomen tuum invocatum est super domum hanc quam ædificavi. And so may they show that your name has been invoked over this house, which I have built.

Si egressus fuerit populus tuus ad bellum contra inimicos suos per viam,And if your people have gone out to war against their enemies, along whatever way you will send them, quocumque miseris eos, orabunt te contra viam civitatis quam elegisti, they shall pray to you in the direction of the city, which you have chosen,et contra domum quam ædificavi nomini tuo,and toward the house, which I have built to your name.

et exaudies in cælo orationes eorum et preces eorum,And you will hear in heaven their prayers and their petitions.et facies judicium eorum. And you will accomplish judgment for them.

Quod si peccaverint tibi (non est enim homo qui non peccet) et iratus tradideris eos inimicis suis, et captivi ducti fuerint in terram inimicorum longe vel prope,But if they sin against you, for there is no man who does not sin, and you, being angry, deliver them to their enemies, and they will have been led away as captives to the land of their enemies, whether far or near,

et egerint pœnitentiam in corde suo in loco captivitatis, and if they do penance in their heart, in the place of captivity,et conversi deprecati te fuerint in captivitate sua,and having been converted, make supplication to you in their captivity, dicentes: Peccavimus:saying, ‘We have sinned;inique egimus,we acted unjustly;impie gessimus:we committed impiety,’

et reversi fuerint ad te in universo corde suo et tota anima sua in terra inimicorum suorum, and they return to you with all their heart and all their soul, in the land of their enemies,ad quam captivi ducti fuerint:to which they have been led away as captives,et oraverint te contra viam terræ suæ,and if they pray to you in the direction of their land, quam dedisti patribus eorum, which you gave to their fathers,et civitatis quam elegisti, and of the city, which you have chosen,et templi quod ædificavi nomini tuo:and of the temple, which I have built to your name:

exaudies in cælo,you will hear in heaven,in firmamento solii tui,in the firmament of your throne, orationes eorum et preces eorum, their prayers and their petitions.et facies judicium eorum:And you will accomplish their judgment.

et propitiaberis populo tuo qui peccavit tibi,And you will forgive your people, who have sinned against you,et omnibus iniquitatibus eorum quibus prævaricati sunt in te:and all their iniquities, by which they have transgressed against you.et dabis misericordiam coram eis qui eos captivos habuerint,And you will grant to them mercy in the sight of those who have made them captives,ut misereantur eis.so that they may take pity on them.

Populus enim tuus est,For they are your peopleet hæreditas tua,and your inheritance, quos eduxisti de terra Ægypti, whom you have led away from the land of Egypt,de medio fornacis ferreæ.from the midst of the furnace of iron.

Ut sint oculi tui aperti ad deprecationem servi tui,So may your eyes be open to the supplication of your servantet populi tui Israël,and of your people Israel.et exaudias eos in universis pro quibus invocaverint te.And so may you heed them in all the things about which they will call upon you.

Tu enim separasti eos tibi in hæreditatem de universis populis terræ,For you have separated them to yourself as an inheritance, from among all the peoples of the earth, sicut locutus es per Moysen servum tuum quando eduxisti patres nostros de Ægypto, just as you spoke by Moses, your servant, when you led our fathers away from Egypt,Domine Deus.O Lord God.”

Factum est autem,And it happened that, cum complesset Salomon orans Dominum omnem orationem et deprecationem hanc, when Solomon had completed praying this entire prayer and supplication to the Lord, surrexit de conspectu altaris Domini:he rose up from the sight of the altar of the Lord.utrumque enim genu in terram fixerat,For he had fixed both knees upon the ground,et manus expanderat in cælum.and he had extended his hands toward heaven.

Stetit ergo,Then he stoodet benedixit omni ecclesiæ Israël voce magna, and blessed the entire assembly of Israel in a great voice, dicens:saying:

Benedictus Dominus,“Blessed is the Lord, qui dedit requiem populo suo Israël,who has given rest to his people Israel, juxta omnia quæ locutus est:in accord with all that he said.non cecidit ne unus quidem sermo ex omnibus bonis quæ locutus est per Moysen servum suum. Not even one word, out of all the good things that he spoke by his servant Moses, has fallen away.

Sit Dominus Deus noster nobiscum,May the Lord our God be with us,sicut fuit cum patribus nostris, just as he was with our fathers, non derelinquens nos,not abandoning us,neque projiciens.and not rejecting us.

Sed inclinet corda nostra ad se,But may he incline our hearts to himself,ut ambulemus in universis viis ejus,so that we may walk in all his ways,et custodiamus mandata ejus, and keep his commandments,et cæremonias ejus, and his ceremonies,et judicia quæcumque mandavit patribus nostris.and whatever judgments he commanded to our fathers.

Et sint sermones mei isti,And may these my words, quibus deprecatus sum coram Domino,by which I have prayed before the Lord, appropinquantes Domino Deo nostro diebe near to the Lord our God,ac nocte, day and night,ut faciat judicium servo suo,so that he may accomplish judgment for his servant and for his people Israel,et populo suo Israël per singulos dies:throughout each day.

ut sciant omnes populi terræ quia Dominus ipse est Deus,So may all the peoples of the earth know that the Lord himself is God,et non est ultra absque eo.and there is no other beside him.

Sit quoque cor nostrum perfectum cum Domino Deo nostro,Also,ut ambulemus in decretis ejus, may our hearts be perfect with the Lord our God,et custodiamus mandata ejus,so that we may walk in his decrees, sicutand keep his commandments,et hodie.as also on this day.”

Igitur rex,Then the king,et omnis Israël cum eo,and all of Israel with him, immolabant victimas coram Domino.immolated victims before the Lord.

Mactavitque Salomon hostias pacificas,And Solomon slew sacrifices of peace offerings, quas immolavit Domino, which he immolated to the Lord:boum viginti duo millia,twenty-two thousand oxen,et ovium centum viginti millia:and twenty thousand one hundred sheep.et dedicaverunt templum Domini rex et filii Israël.And the king and all the sons of Israel dedicated the temple of the Lord.

In die illa sanctificavit rex medium atrii quod erat ante domum Domini:On that day, the king sanctified the middle of the atrium, which was before the house of the Lord.fecit quippe holocaustum ibi,For in that place, he offered holocaust,et sacrificium, et adipem pacificorum:and sacrifice, and the fat of peace offerings.quoniam altare æreum quod erat coram Domino,For the bronze altar, which was before the Lord, minus erat, et capere non poterat holocaustum, was too small and was not able to hold the holocaust,et sacrificium, and the sacrifice,et adipem pacificorum.and the fat of the peace offerings.

Fecit ergo Salomon in tempore illo festivitatem celebrem,Then Solomon made, at that time, a celebratory festival,et omnis Israël cum eo,and all of Israel with him, multitudo magna ab introitu Emath usque ad rivum Ægypti,a great multitude, from the entrance of Hamath to the river of Egypt, coram Domino Deo nostro,in the sight of the Lord our God,septem diebus et septem diebus, for seven days plus seven days,id est, that is,quatuordecim diebus.fourteen days.

Et in die octava dimisit populos:And on the eighth day,qui benedicentes regi,he dismissed the people.profecti sunt in tabernacula sua lætantes,And blessing the king,et alacri corde super omnibus bonis quæ fecerat Dominus David servo suo, they set out for their tents,et Israël populo suo.rejoicing and cheerful in heart over all the good things that the Lord had done for his servant David and for his people Israel.
