Postquam autem reversa est ad socrum suam,But afterwards, when she returned to her mother-in-law,audivit ab ea:Naomi said to her:Filia mea,“My daughter,quæram tibi requiem,I will seek rest for you,et providebo ut bene sit tibi.and I will provide so that it may be well with you.
Booz iste,This Boaz, cujus puellis in agro juncta es,whose young women you joined in the field, propinquus noster est,is our near relative,et hac nocte aream hordei ventilat.and this night he will winnow the threshing floor of barley.
Lavare igitur,Therefore,et ungere, wash and anoint yourself,et induere cultioribus vestimentis, and put on your decorative garments,et descende in aream:and go down to the threshing floor, non te videat homo, but do not let the man see you, donec esum potumque finierit.while he finishes eating and drinking.
Quando autem ierit ad dormiendum,But when he goes to sleep, nota locum in quo dormiat:observe the place where he sleeps.veniesque et discooperies pallium,And you will approach and lift up the covering, quo operitur a parte pedum, the part which covers near his feet,et projicies te,and lay yourself down,et ibi jacebis:and sleep there;ipse autem dicet quid agere debeas.but he will tell you what you are obliged to do.”
Quæ respondit:She answered,Quidquid præceperis, faciam.“I will do everything as you have instructed.”
Descenditque in aream,And she went down to the threshing floor,et fecit omnia quæ sibi imperaverat socrus.and she did everything that her mother-in-law had commanded her.
Cumque comedisset Booz,And when Boaz had finished eating and drinking,et bibisset, and he was merry,et factus esset hilarior, and he had gone to sleep by the pile of sheaves, issetque ad dormiendum juxta acervum manipulorum, she approached secretly, venit abscondite, and,et discooperto pallio, lifting the covering near his feet,a pedibus ejus se projecit.she laid herself down.
Et ecce,And behold, nocte jam media expavit homo, when it was the middle of the night,et conturbatus est:the man became frightened and confused, viditque mulierem jacentem ad pedes suos, and he saw a woman lying near his feet.
et ait illi:And he said to her,Quæ es? Illaque respondit:“Who are you?” And she answered,Ego sum Ruth ancilla tua:“I am Ruth, your handmaid.expande pallium tuum super famulam tuam, quia propinquus es.Spread your covering over your servant, for you are a near relative.”
Et ille:And he said,Benedicta, inquit, es a Domino,“You are blessed by the Lord, filia, daughter,et priorem misericordiam posteriore superasti:and you have excelled beyond your earlier benevolence, quia non est secuta juvenes, pauperes sive divites.because you have not followed young men, whether poor or rich.
Noli ergo metuere,Therefore, do not be afraid, sed quidquid dixeris mihi, but whatever you decide about me,faciam tibi. Scit enim omnis populus,I will accomplish for you. For all the people, qui habitat intra portas urbis meæ,who dwell within the gates of my city, mulierem te esse virtutis.know that you are a virtuous woman.
Nec abnuo me propinquum,Neither do I deny myself to be a near relative, sed est alius me propinquior.but there is another nearer than I.
Quiesce hac nocte:Be at peace for this night.et facto mane,And when morning arrives,si te voluerit propinquitatis jure retinere,if he is willing to uphold the law of kinship for you, bene res acta est:things will turn out well;sin autem ille noluerit, but if he is not willing, then, ego te absque ulla dubitatione suscipiam,I will take you, without any doubt, vivit Dominus.as the Lord lives.Dormi usque mane.Sleep until morning.”
Dormivit itaque ad pedes ejus,And so she slept by his feet until the night was ending.usque ad noctis abscessum. And she arose before men could inquire of one another.Surrexit itaque antequam homines se cognoscerent mutuo,And Boaz said,et dixit Booz:“Be careful,Cave ne quis noverit quod huc veneris.lest someone know that you came here.”
Et rursum: Expande,And again he said, inquit, pallium tuum, quo operiris,“Spread your mantle that covers you,et tene utraque manu.and hold it with both hands.”Qua extendente, et tenente,As she extended it and held it,mensus est sex modios hordei, et posuit super eam.he measured six measures of barley and placed it upon her.Quæ portans ingressa est civitatem,Carrying it, she went into the city.
et venit ad socrum suam. And she came to her mother-in-law,Quæ dixit ei: Quid egisti, who said to her: “What have you been doing, filia?daughter?”Narravitque ei omnia, quæ sibi fecisset homo. And she explained to her all that the man had accomplished for her.
Et ait:And she said,Ecce sex modios hordei dedit mihi,“Behold, he gave me six measures of barley,et ait:for he said,Nolo vacuam te reverti ad socrum tuam.‘I am not willing to have you return empty to your mother-in-law.’”
Dixitque Noëmi:And Naomi said,Expecta, filia,“Wait, daughter, donec videamus quem res exitum habeat:until we see how things will turn out.neque enim cessabit homo, nisi compleverit quod locutus est.For the man will not rest until he has accomplished what he said.”
