O quam bonus et suavis est,O how good and gracious,Domine,Lord, spiritus tuus in omnibus!is your spirit in all things!
Ideoque eos qui exerrant partibus corripis,Therefore, those who wander afield, you correct,et de quibus peccant admones et alloqueris, and, as to those who sin, you counsel them and admonish them,ut relicta malitia credant in te,so that, having abandoned malice, they may believe in you,Domine.O Lord.
Illos enim antiquos inhabitatores terræ sanctæ tuæ,For those ancient inhabitants of your holy land, quos exhorruisti, who you abhorred,
quoniam odibilia opera tibi faciebant per medicaminabecause they were doing works hateful to you,et sacrificia injusta, through unjust medicines and sacrifices,
et filiorum suorum necatores sine misericordia, and the merciless murderers of their own sons,et comestores viscerum hominum, and the eaters of human entrails,et devoratores sanguinis a medio sacramento tuo,and the devourers of blood apart from your community sacrament,
et auctores parentes animarum inauxiliatarum, and the sellers performing the ceremonies of helpless souls, perdere voluisti per manus parentum nostrorum:you willed to destroy by the hands of our parents,
ut dignam perciperent peregrinationem puerorum Dei,so that they might worthily secure the sojourn of the children of God,quæ tibi omnium carior est terra.in the land which is most beloved by you.
Sed et his tamquam hominibus pepercisti,Yet, so that you were lenient even to these men,et misisti antecessores exercitus tui vespas, you sent wasps, forerunners of your army,ut illos paulatim exterminarent.so that you might destroy them little by little,
Non quia impotens eras in bello subjicere impios justis, not because you were unable to subdue the impious under the just by waraut bestiis sævis,or by cruel beasts, aut verbo duro simul exterminare:or with a harsh word to exterminate them at once,
sed partibus judicans, but, in judging by degrees, dabas locum pœnitentiæ, non ignorans quoniam nequam est natio eorum, you were giving them a place of repentance, not unaware that their nation is wicked,et naturalis malitia ipsorum, and their malice is inherent,et quoniam non poterat mutari cogitatio illorum in perpetuum.and that their thinking could never be changed.
Semen enim erat maledictum ab initio; nec timens aliquem,For this offspring was accursed from the beginning. Neither did you, veniam dabas peccatis illorum.fearing anyone, give favor to their sins.
Quis enim dicet tibi:For who will say to you,Quid fecisti?“What have you done?”aut quis stabit contra judicium tuum?Or who will stand against your judgment?aut quis in conspectu tuo veniet vindex iniquorum hominum?Or who will come before you as a defender of unfair men?aut quis tibi imputabit,Or who will accuse you,si perierint nationes quas tu fecisti?if the nations perish, which you have made?
Non enim est alius deus quam tu,For neither is there any other God but you,cui cura est de omnibus, who has care of all,ut ostendas quoniam non injuste judicas judicium.to whom you would show that you did not give judgment unjustly.
Neque rex,Neither will kingneque tyrannus in conspectu tuo inquirent de his quos perdidisti.or tyrant inquire before you about those whom you destroyed.
Cum ergo sis justus,Therefore, since you are just, juste omnia disponis;you order all things justly, ipsum quoque qui non debet puniri, condemnare, exterum æstimas a tua virtute.considering it foreign to your virtue to condemn him who does not deserve to be punished.
Virtus enim tua justitiæ initium est,For your power is the beginning of justice,et ob hoc quod Dominus es,and, because you are Lord of all, omnibus te parcere facis.you make yourself to be lenient to all.
Virtutem enim ostendis tu, qui non crederis esse in virtute consummatus,For you reveal power to those who do not believe you to be perfect in power,et horum qui te nesciunt audaciam traducis.and you expose the arrogance of those who do not know you.
Tu autem dominator virtutis,Yet,cum tranquillitate judicas, you are the master of power,et cum magna reverentia disponis nos:since you judge with tranquility, subest enim tibi, and since you administer us with great reverence;cum volueris posse.for it is close to you to be used whenever you will.
Docuisti autem populum tuum per talia opera,But you have taught your people, quoniam oportet justum essethrough such works,et humanum;that they must be just and humane,et bonæ spei fecisti filios tuos, and you have made your sons to be of good hope, quoniam judicans das locum in peccatis pœnitentiæ.because in judging you provide a place for repentance from sins.
Si enim inimicos servorum tuorum,For even if the enemies of your servants were deserving of death,et debitos morti,you afflicted them with great attentiveness,cum tanta cruciasti attentione,providing a timedans tempus et locum per quæ possent mutari a malitia:and a place whereby they would be able to be changed from malice;
cum quanta diligentia judicasti filios tuos, with what diligence, then, have you judged your sons, quorum parentibus juramenta et conventiones dedisti bonarum promissionum!whose parents you have given oaths and covenants in good faith!
Cum ergo das nobis disciplinam,Therefore, while you give us discipline, inimicos nostros multipliciter flagellas, you give our enemies a multiplicity of scourges,ut bonitatem tuam cogitemus judicantes,so that in judging we may think on your goodness,et cum de nobis judicatur, and when we are judged, speremus misericordiam tuam.we may hope for mercy.
Unde et illis qui in vita sua insensate et injuste vixerunt,Therefore, also to these, who have lived their life irrationally and unjustly, per hæc quæ coluerunt dedisti summa tormenta.through these things that they worshiped, you gave the greatest torments.
Etenim in erroris via diutius erraverunt,And, indeed, they wandered for a long time in the way of error, deos æstimantes hæc quæ in animalibus sunt supervacua, valuing those things as gods, which are worthless even among animals, infantium insensatorum more viventes.living in foolish irrational behavior.
Propter hoc tamquam pueris insensatis judicium in derisum dedisti.Because of this, you have given a judgment in derision, as if from foolish children.
Qui autem ludibriis et increpationibus non sunt correcti,But those who have not been corrected by mockery and chiding, dignum Dei judicium experti sunt.have experienced a judgment worthy of God.
In quibus enim patientes indignabantur per hæc quos putabant deos,For among those who were indignant at their sufferings, which came through those things that they reputed to be gods,in ipsis cum exterminarentur videntes, when they saw that they would be destroyed by these same things, illum quem olim negabant se nosse, those who formerly refused knowledge of him, verum Deum agnoverunt;now acknowledged the true God,propter quod et finis condemnationis eorum venit super illos.and, because of this, the end of their condemnation came upon them.
