Tunc respondit Tobias patri suo,Then Tobias responded to his father,et dixit:and he said:Omnia quæcumque præcepisti mihi faciam,“I will do everything just as you have instructed me,pater.father.

Quomodo autem pecuniam hanc requiram,But I do not know how to obtain this money.ignoro:He does not know me,ille me nescit, and I do not know him.et ego eum ignoro:What proof shall I give to him?quod signum dabo ei?And I do not know any part of the way,sed neque viam per quam pergatur illuc aliquando cognovi.which leads to that place.”

Tunc pater suus respondit illi,Then his father answered him, and he said:et dixit:“Indeed,Chirographum quidem illius penes me habeo:I have a written agreement about that in my possession, quod dum illi ostenderis, which, when you show it to him, statim restituet.he will immediately repay it.

Sed perge nunc,But go out now,et inquire tibi aliquem fidelem virum, qui eat tecum salva mercede sua,and inquire after some faithful man, who would go with you to keep you safe in return for his wages,ut dum adhuc vivo, recipias eam.so that you may receive it while I am still alive.”

Tunc egressus Tobias,Then Tobias, departing, invenit juvenem splendidum stantem præcinctum, et quasi paratum ad ambulandum.found a splendid young man, standing girded and seemingly ready for travel.

Et ignorans quod angelus Dei esset,And not knowing that he was an Angel of God,salutavit eum,he greeted him,et dixit:and he said,Unde te habemus,“Where are you from, bone juvenis?good young man?”

At ille respondit:And so he answered,Ex filiis Israël.“From the sons of Israel.”Et Tobias dixit ei:And Tobias said to him,Nosti viam quæ ducit in regionem Medorum?“Do you know the way that leads to the region of the Medes?”

Cui respondit:And he answered:Novi: et omnia itinera ejus frequenter ambulavi,“I know it. And I have frequently walked through all its paths,et mansi apud Gabelum fratrem nostrum, and I stayed with Gabael, our brother, qui moratur in Rages civitate Medorum, who lives in Rages, a city of the Medes,quæ posita est in monte Ecbatanis.which is situated at the mount of Ecbatana.”

Cui Tobias ait:Tobias said to him,Sustine me obsecro,“I implore you, wait here for me,donec hæc ipsa nuntiem patri meo.until I tell these same things to my father.”

Tunc ingressus Tobias,Then Tobias, entering, indicavit universa hæc patri suo.revealed all these things to his father.Super quæ admiratus pater,Upon which, his father, in admiration, rogavit ut introiret ad eum.asked that he would enter to him.

Ingressus itaque salutavit eum,And so, entering, he greeted him,et dixit:and he said,Gaudium tibi sit semper.“May gladness be always with you.”

Et ait Tobias:And Tobit said,Quale gaudium mihi erit,“What kind of gladness will be for me,qui in tenebris sedeo, since I sit in darknesset lumen cæli non video?and do not see the light of heaven?”

Cui ait juvenis:And the young man said to him,Forti animo esto:“Be steadfast in soul.in proximo est ut a Deo cureris.Your cure from God is near.”

Dixit itaque illi Tobias:And so Tobit said to him,Numquid poteris perducere filium meum ad Gabelum in Rages civitatem Medorum?“Are you able to lead my son to Gabael in Rages, a city of the Medes?et cum redieris,And when you return, restituam tibi mercedem tuam.I will pay you your wages.”

Et dixit ei angelus:And the Angel said to him,Ego ducam,“I will lead him,et reducam eum ad te.and I will bring him back to you.”

Cui Tobias respondit:And Tobit responded to him,Rogo te,“I ask you to tell me:indica mihi de qua domo aut de qua tribu es tu.which family or which tribe are you from?”

Cui Raphaël angelus dixit: Genus quæris mercenarii,And Raphael the Angel said, “Do you seek the family of the one you hire,an ipsum mercenarium qui cum filio tuo eat?or else the hired hand himself, to go with your son?

sed ne forte sollicitum te reddam,But, lest perhaps I cause you to worry:ego sum Azarias Ananiæ magni filius.I am Azariah, the son of Hananiah the great.”

Et Tobias respondit:And Tobit responded,Ex magno genere es tu.“You are from a great family.Sed peto ne irascaris quod voluerim cognoscere genus tuum. But I ask you, do not be angry that I wanted to know your family.”

Dixit autem illi angelus:But the Angel said to him,Ego sanum ducam,“I will lead your son safely,et sanum tibi reducam filium tuum.and I will bring him back safely to you.”

Respondens autem Tobias,And so Tobit, answering, ait:said,Bene ambuletis,“May you walk well,et sit Deus in itinere vestro, and may God be with you on your journey,et angelus ejus comitetur vobiscum.and may his Angel accompany you.”

Tunc paratis omnibus quæ erant in via portanda,Then, when all things were ready which were to be carried on their journey, fecit Tobias vale patri suo et matri suæ,Tobias said farewell to his father, and to his mother,et ambulaverunt ambo simul.and the two of them walked together.

Cumque profecti essent,And when they had set out,cœpit mater ejus flere, his mother began to weep,et dicere:and to say:Baculum senectutis nostræ tulisti,“You have taken the staff of our old age,et transmisisti a nobis.and you have sent him away from us.

Numquam fuisset ipsa pecunia,I wish that the money, for which you sent him,pro qua misisti eum:had never been.

sufficiebat enim nobis paupertas nostra,For our poverty has been sufficient for us,ut divitias computaremus hoc, quod videbamus filium nostrum.so that we might count it as riches that we saw our son.”

Dixitque ei Tobias:And Tobit said to her:Noli flere:“Do not weep.salvus perveniet filius noster,Our son will arrive safely,et salvus revertetur ad nos,and he will return safely to us,et oculi tui videbunt illum.and your eyes shall see him.

Credo enim quod angelus Dei bonus comitetur ei,For I believe that the good Angel of God accompanies himet bene disponat omnia quæ circa eum geruntur, and that he orders all things well which occur around him,ita ut cum gaudio revertatur ad nos.such that he will be returned to us with gladness.”

Ad hanc vocem cessavit mater ejus flere,At these words, his mother ceased weeping,et tacuit.and she was silent.
