Visio Abdiæ.The vision of Obadiah.Hæc dicit Dominus Deus ad Edom:Thus says the Lord God to Edom:Auditum audivimus a Domino,We have heard a report from the Lord,et legatum ad gentes misit:and he has sent an envoy to the nations:surgite,“Arise,et consurgamus adversus eum in prælium.and let us together rise up in battle against him.”

Ecce parvulum dedi te in gentibus:Behold, I have made you little among the nations.contemptibilis tu es valde. You are greatly contemptible.

Superbia cordis tui extulit te,The arrogance of your heart has lifted you up,habitantem in scissuris petrarum, living in the clefts of the rocks, exaltantem solium tuum;exalting your throne.qui dicis in corde tuo:You say in your heart,Quis detrahet me in terram?“Who will pull me down to the ground?”

Si exaltatus fueris ut aquila,Though you have been lifted high like an eagle,et si inter sidera posueris nidum tuum, and though you have placed your nest among the stars, inde detraham te,from there I will pull you down, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Si fures introissent ad te,If thieves had approached you,si latrones per noctem,if robbers by night, quomodo conticuisses?how would you have remained unnoticed?nonne furati essent sufficientia sibi?Would they not have stolen all that they wanted?Si vindemiatores introissent ad te,If the grape-pickers had approached you, numquid saltem racemum reliquissent tibi?would they not have left you at least a cluster?

Quomodo scrutati sunt Esau;In what way have they been examining Esau?investigaverunt abscondita ejus? They investigated his secrets.

Usque ad terminum emiserunt te:They have sent you out all the way to the limit.omnes viri fœderis tui illuserunt tibi:All the men of your alliance have deceived you.invaluerunt adversum te viri pacis tuæ,Your men of peace have prevailed against you.qui comedunt tecum, ponent insidias subter te;Those who eat with you will place snares under you.non est prudentia in eo.There is no foresight in him.

Numquid non in die illa,Shall I not, dicit Dominus,in that day, perdam sapientes de Idumæa,says the Lord,et prudentiam de monte Esau?wipe away understanding from Idumea and foresight from the mount of Esau?

Et timebunt fortes tui a meridie,And your strong from the Meridian will be afraid,ut intereat vir de monte Esau.so that man may perish from the mount of Esau.

Propter interfectionem,Because of the execution,et propter iniquitatem in fratrem tuum Jacob, and because of the iniquity against your brother Jacob, operiet te confusio, confusion will cover you,et peribis in æternum.and you will pass away into eternity.

In die cum stares adversus eum,In the day when you stood against him, quando capiebant alieni exercitum ejus, when strangers seized his army,et extranei ingrediebantur portas ejus, and foreigners entered into his gates,et super Jerusalem mittebant sortem, and they cast lots over Jerusalem:tu quoque eras quasi unus ex eis.you also were just like one of them.

Et non despicies in die fratris tui, in die peregrinationis ejus:But you shall not show disdain for the day of your brother in the day of his sojourn.et non lætaberis super filios Juda in die perditionis eorum:And you shall not rejoice over the sons of Judah in the day of their perdition.et non magnificabis os tuum in die angustiæ.And you shall not magnify your mouth in the day of anguish.

Neque ingredieris portam populi mei in die ruinæ eorum; And neither shall you enter into the gate of my people in the day of their ruin.neque despicies et tu in malis ejus in die vastitatis illius. And neither shall you also show disdain for his troubles in the day of his desolation.Et non emitteris adversus exercitum ejus in die vastitatis illius,And you shall not send out against his army in the day of his desolation.

neque stabis in exitibus ut interficias eos qui fugerint,Neither shall you stand at the exits to execute those who will flee.et non concludes reliquos ejus in die tribulationis. And you shall not enclose their remnant in the day of tribulation.

Quoniam juxta est dies Domini super omnes gentes:For the day of the Lord is near, over all nations. Just as you have done, sicut fecisti, fiet tibi;so will it be done to you.retributionem tuam convertet in caput tuum.He will turn back your retribution on your own head.

Quomodo enim bibistis super montem sanctum meum,For in the manner that you drank on my holy mountain, bibent omnes gentes jugiter:so shall all nations drink continually.et bibent,And they will drink,et absorbebunt, and they will absorb,et erunt quasi non sint.and they will be as if they were not.

Et in monte Sion erit salvatio,And on mount Zion there will be salvation,et erit sanctus;and it will be holy.et possidebit domus Jacob eos qui se possederant. And the house of Jacob will possess those who had possessed them.

Et erit domus Jacob ignis,And the house of Jacob will be a fire,et domus Joseph flamma, and the house of Joseph a flame,et domus Esau stipula:and the house of Esau stubble.et succendentur in eis,And they will be set on fire among them,et devorabunt eos,and they will devour them.et non erunt reliquiæ domus Esau,And there will be no remnant of the house of Esau, quia Dominus locutus est.for the Lord has spoken.

Et hæreditabunt hi,And those who are towards the South, qui ad austrum sunt, montem Esau, and who are in the camps of the Philistines,et qui in campestribus, will inherit the mount of Esau.Philisthiim: et possidebunt regionem Ephraim et regionem Samariæ,And they will possess the region of Ephraim, and the region of Samaria.et Benjamin possidebit Galaad. And Benjamin will possess Gilead.

Et transmigratio exercitus hujus filiorum Israël,And the exiles of this army of the sons of Israel, omnia loca Chananæorum usque ad Sareptam:all the places of the Canaanites all the way to Sarepta,et transmigratio Jerusalem, quæ in Bosphoro est,and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Bosphoro, possidebit civitates austri.will possess the cities of the South.

Et ascendent salvatores in montem Sion judicare montem Esau,And the saviors will ascend to mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau.et erit Domino regnum. And the kingdom will be for the Lord.
