Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jonam, filium Amathi,And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, dicens:saying:
Surge,Riseet vade in Niniven, and go to Nineveh, civitatem grandem, the great city,et prædica in ea,and preach in it.quia ascendit malitia ejus coram me.For its malice has ascended before my eyes.
Et surrexit Jonas,And Jonah rose in order to flee from the face of the Lord to Tarshish.ut fugeret in Tharsis a facie Domini,And he went down to Joppaet descendit in Joppen:and found a ship bound for Tarshish.et invenit navem euntem in Tharsis,And he paid its fare,et dedit naulum ejus, and he went down into it,et descendit in eam ut iret cum eis in Tharsis a facie Domini.in order to go with them to Tarshish from the face of the Lord.
Dominus autem misit ventum magnum in mare:But the Lord sent a great wind into the sea.et facta est tempestas magna in mari,And a great tempest took place in the sea,et navis periclitabatur conteri.and the ship was in danger of being crushed.
Et timuerunt nautæ,And the mariners were afraid,et clamaverunt viri ad deum suum, and the men cried out to their god.et miserunt vasa quæ erant in navi, in mare, ut alleviaretur ab eis;And they threw the containers that were in the ship into the sea in order to lighten it of them.et Jonas descendit ad interiora navis,And Jonah went down into the interior of the ship,et dormiebat sopore gravi.and he fell into a painful deep sleep.
Et accessit ad eum gubernator,And the helmsman approached him,et dixit ei:and he said to him,Quid tu sopore deprimeris?“Why are you weighed down with sleep?surge,Rise, invoca Deum tuum, call upon your God,si forte recogitet Deus de nobis,so perhaps God will be mindful of uset non pereamus.and we might not perish.”
Et dixit vir ad collegam suum:And a man said to his shipmate,Venite“Come,et mittamus sortes, and let us cast lots,et sciamus quare hoc malum sit nobis.so that we may know why this disaster is upon us.”Et miserunt sortes,And they cast lots,et cecidit sors super Jonam.and the lot fell upon Jonah.
Et dixerunt ad eum:And they said to him:Indica nobis cujus causa malum istud sit nobis:“Explain to us what is the reason that this disaster is upon us.quod est opus tuum? What is your work?quæ terra tua,Which is your country?et quo vadis? And where are you going?vel ex quo populo es tu?Or which people are you from?”
Et dixit ad eos:And he said to them,Hebræus ego sum,“I am Hebrew,et Dominum Deum cæli ego timeo, and I fear the Lord God of heaven, qui fecit mare et aridam.who made the sea and the dry land.”
Et timuerunt viri timore magno,And the men were greatly afraid,et dixerunt ad eum:and they said to him,Quid hoc fecisti?“Why have you done this?”cognoverunt enim viri quod a facie Domini fugeret,(For the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, quia indicaverat eis.because he had told them.)
Et dixerunt ad eum:And they said to him,Quid faciemus tibi,“What are we to do with you,et cessabit mare a nobis?so that the sea will cease for us?”quia mare ibat,For the sea flowedet intumescebat.and swelled.
Et dixit ad eos:And he said to them,Tollite me,“Take me,et mittite in mare, and cast me into the sea,et cessabit mare a vobis:and the sea will cease for you.scio enim ego quoniam propter me tempestas hæc grandis venit super vos.For I know that it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.”
Et remigabant viri ut reverterentur ad aridam,And the men were rowing,et non valebant,so as to return to dry land, quia mare ibat, but they did not succeed.et intumescebat super eos.For the sea flowed and swelled against them.
Et clamaverunt ad Dominum,And they cried out to the Lord,et dixerunt:and they said,Quæsumus, Domine,“We beseech you, Lord,ne pereamus in anima viri istius,do not let us perish for this man’s life,et ne des super nos sanguinem innocentem:and do not attribute to us innocent blood.quia tu,For you, Lord,Domine, sicut voluisti, fecisti.have done just as it pleased you.”
Et tulerunt Jonam,And they took Jonahet miserunt in mare:and cast him into the sea.et stetit mare a fervore suo.And the sea was stilled from its fury.
Et timuerunt viri timore magno Dominum:And the men feared the Lord greatly,et immolaverunt hostias Domino, and they sacrificed victims to the Lord,et voverunt vota.and they made vows.
