Primum quidem sermonem feci de omnibus,Certainly,o Theophile,O Theophilus,quæ cœpit Jesus facere et docereI composed the first discourse about everything that Jesus began to do and to teach,
usque in diem qua præcipiens Apostolis per Spiritum Sanctum, instructing the Apostles, quos elegit, whom he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, assumptus est:even until the day on which he was taken up.
quibus et præbuit seipsum vivum post passionem suam in multis argumentis,He also presented himself alive to them, per dies quadraginta apparens eis, after his Passion,et loquens de regno Dei.appearing to them throughout forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God with many elucidations.
Et convescens,And dining with them,præcepit eis ab Jerosolymis ne discederent,he instructed them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, sed exspectarent promissionem Patris, but that they should wait for the Promise of the Father, quam audistis (inquit) per os meum:“about which you have heard,” he said, “from my own mouth.
quia Joannes quidem baptizavit aqua,For John, indeed, baptized with water, vos autem baptizabimini Spiritu Sancto non post multos hos dies.but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit, not many days from now.”
Igitur qui convenerant,Therefore, interrogabant eum, those who had assembled together questioned him, dicentes:saying,Domine,“Lord,si in tempore hoc restitues regnum Israël?is this the time when you will restore the kingdom of Israel?”
Dixit autem eis:But he said to them:Non est vestrum nosse tempora“It is not yours to know the times or the moments, vel momenta quæ Pater posuit in sua potestate:which the Father has set by his own authority.
sed accipietis virtutem supervenientis Spiritus Sancti in vos,But you shall receive the power of the Holy Spirit,et eritis mihi testes in Jerusalem, passing over you,et in omni Judæa,and you shall be witnesses for me in Jerusalem,et Samaria, and in all Judea and Samaria,et usque ad ultimum terræ.and even to the ends of the earth.”
Et cum hæc dixisset,And when he had said these things, videntibus illis, while they were watching, elevatus est:he was lifted up,et nubes suscepit eum ab oculis eorum.and a cloud took him from their sight.
Cumque intuerentur in cælum euntem illum,And while they were watching him going up to heaven, ecce duo viri astiterunt juxta illos in vestibus albis, behold, two men stood near them in white vestments.
qui et dixerunt:And they said:Viri Galilæi,“Men of Galilee, quid statis aspicientes in cælum?why do you stand here looking up toward heaven?Hic Jesus,This Jesus, qui assumptus est a vobis in cælum, who has been taken up from you into heaven, sic veniet quemadmodum vidistis eum euntem in cælum.shall return in just the same way that you have seen him going up to heaven.”
Tunc reversi sunt Jerosolymam a monte qui vocatur Oliveti,Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain, which is called Olivet, qui est juxta Jerusalem, which is next to Jerusalem, sabbati habens iter.within a Sabbath day’s journey.
Et cum introissent in cœnaculum,And when they had entered into the cenacle, ascenderunt ubi manebant Petrus, they ascended to the place where Peter and John,et Joannes,James and Andrew,Jacobus, et Andreas,Philip and Thomas,Philippus, et Thomas,Bartholomew and Matthew,Bartholomæus, et Matthæus, Jacobus Alphæi,James of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot,et Simon Zelotes, and Jude of James,et Judas Jacobi.were staying.
Hi omnes erant perseverantes unanimiter in oratione cum mulieribus,All these were persevering with one accord in prayer with the women, and with Mary,et Maria matre Jesu, the mother of Jesus,et fratribus ejus.and with his brothers.
In diebus illis,In those days, exsurgens Petrus in medio fratrum,Peter, dixit (erat autem turba hominum simul, rising up in the midst of the brothers, fere centum viginti):said (now the crowd of men altogether was about one hundred and twenty):
Viri fratres,“Noble brothers, oportet impleri Scripturam quam prædixit Spiritus Sanctus per os David de Juda, the Scripture must be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit predicted by the mouth of David about Judas, qui fuit dux eorum qui comprehenderunt Jesum:who was the leader of those who apprehended Jesus.
qui connumeratus erat in nobis,He had been numbered among us,et sortitus est sortem ministerii hujus.and he was chosen by lot for this ministry.
Et hic quidem possedit agrum de mercede iniquitatis,And this man certainly possessed an estate from the wages of iniquity, and so,et suspensus crepuit medius: et diffusa sunt omnia viscera ejus.having been hanged, he burst open in the middle and all his internal organs poured out.
Et notum factum est omnibus habitantibus Jerusalem,And this became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, ita ut appellaretur ager ille, lingua eorum,so that this field was called in their language,Haceldama,Akeldama, hoc est, that is,ager sanguinis.‘Field of Blood.’
Scriptum est enim in libro Psalmorum:For it has been written in the book of Psalms:Fiat commoratio eorum deserta,‘Let their dwelling place be desolateet non sit qui inhabitet in ea:and may there be no one who dwells within it,’et episcopatum ejus accipiat alter.and ‘Let another take his episcopate.’
Oportet ergo ex his viris qui nobiscum sunt congregati in omni tempore quo intravit et exivit inter nos Dominus Jesus,Therefore, it is necessary that, out of these men who have been assembling with us throughout the entire time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
incipiens a baptismate Joannis usque in diem qua assumptus est a nobis, beginning from the baptism of John, until the day when he was taken up from us,testem resurrectionis ejus nobiscum fieri unum ex istis.one of these be made a witness with us of his Resurrection.”
Et statuerunt duos,And they appointed two:Joseph,Joseph, qui vocabatur Barsabas, who was called Barsabbas, qui cognominatus est Justus, who was surnamed Justus,et Mathiam.and Matthias.
Et orantes dixerunt:And praying, they said:Tu Domine,“May you, O Lord, qui corda nosti omnium, who knows the heart of everyone, ostende quem elegeris ex his duobus unum, reveal which one of these two you have chosen,
accipere locum ministerii hujusto take a place in this ministry and apostleship,et apostolatus, from which Judas prevaricated,de quo prævaricatus est Judas ut abiret in locum suum.so that he might go to his own place.”
Et dederunt sortes eis,And they cast lots concerning them,et cecidit sors super Mathiam:and the lot fell upon Matthias.et annumeratus est cum undecim Apostolis. And he was numbered with the eleven Apostles.
