Et cum complerentur dies Pentecostes,And when the days of Pentecost were completed, erant omnes pariter in eodem loco:they were all together in the same place.
et factus est repente de cælo sonus,And suddenly, there came a sound from heaven, tamquam advenientis spiritus vehementis, like that of a wind approaching violently,et replevit totam domum ubi erant sedentes.and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Et apparuerunt illis dispertitæ linguæ tamquam ignis,And there appeared to them separate tongues, as if of fire, seditque supra singulos eorum:which settled upon each one of them.
et repleti sunt omnes Spiritu Sancto,And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.et cœperunt loqui variis linguis,And they began to speak in various languages, prout Spiritus Sanctus dabat eloqui illis.just as the Holy Spirit bestowed eloquence to them.
Erant autem in Jerusalem habitantes Judæi,Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, viri religiosi ex omni natione quæ sub cælo est.pious men from every nation that is under heaven.
Facta autem hac voce,And when this sound occurred, convenit multitudo, the multitude came togetheret mente confusa est,and was confused in mind, quoniam audiebat unusquisque lingua sua illos loquentes.because each one was listening to them speaking in his own language.
Stupebant autem omnes,Then all were astonished,et mirabantur, and they wondered, dicentes:saying:Nonne ecce omnes isti qui loquuntur,“Behold,Galilæi sunt?are not all of these who are speaking Galileans?
et quomodo nos audivimus unusquisque linguam nostram in qua nati sumus? And how is it that we have each heard them in our own language, into which we were born?
Parthi,Parthianset Medi,and Medeset Ælamitæ,and Elamites,et qui habitant Mespotamiam,and those who inhabit Mesopotamia,Judæam,Judeaet Cappadociam,and Cappadocia,Pontum,Pontuset Asiam,and Asia,
Phrygiam,Phrygiaet Pamphyliam, and Pamphylia,Ægyptum,Egyptet partes Libyæ quæ est circa Cyrenen:and the parts of Libya which are around Cyrene,et advenæ Romani, and new arrivals of the Romans,
Judæi quoque, likewise Jewset Proselyti, and new converts,Cretes,Cretanset Arabes:and Arabs:audivimus eos loquentes nostris linguis magnalia Dei.we have heard them speaking in our own languages the mighty deeds of God.”
Stupebant autem omnes,And they were all astonished,et mirabantur ad invicem, and they wondered, dicentes:saying to one another:Quidnam vult hoc esse?“But what does this mean?”
Alii autem irridentes dicebant:But others mockingly said,Quia musto pleni sunt isti.“These men are full of new wine.”
Stans autem Petrus cum undecim,But Peter, standing up with the eleven, levavit vocem suam, lifted up his voice,et locutus est eis:and he spoke to them:Viri Judæi,“Men of Judea,et qui habitatis Jerusalem universi, and all those who are staying in Jerusalem, hoc vobis notum sit,let this be known to you,et auribus percipite verba mea.and incline your ears to my words.
Non enim, sicut vos æstimatis,For these men are not inebriated,hi ebrii sunt,as you suppose, cum sit hora diei tertia:for it is the third hour of the day.
sed hoc est quod dictum est per prophetam Joël:But this is what was spoken of by the prophet Joel:
Et erit in novissimis diebus,‘And this shall be: in the last days, dicit Dominus, says the Lord, effundam de Spiritu meo super omnem carnem:I will pour out, from my Spirit, upon all flesh.et prophetabunt filii vestri et filiæ vestræ,And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.et juvenes vestri visiones videbunt,And your youths shall see visions,et seniores vestri somnia somniabunt.and your elders shall dream dreams.
Et quidem super servos meos,And certainly,et super ancillas meas, upon my men and women servants in those days,in diebus illis effundam de Spiritu meo,I will pour out from my Spirit,et prophetabunt:and they shall prophesy.
et dabo prodigia in cælo sursum,And I will bestow wonders in heaven above,et signa in terra deorsum, and signs on earth below:sanguinem, bloodet ignem, and fireet vaporem fumi:and the vapor of smoke.
sol convertetur in tenebras, et luna in sanguinem,The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, antequam veniat dies Domini magnus et manifestus.before the great and manifest day of the Lord arrives.
Et erit:And this shall be:omnis quicumque invocaverit nomen Domini, salvus erit.whoever shall invoke the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Viri Israëlitæ, audite verba hæc: Jesum Nazarenum, virum approbatum a Deo in vobis, virtutibus, et prodigiis, et signis, quæ fecit Deus per illum in medio vestri, sicut et vos scitis:Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus the Nazarene is a man confirmed by God among you through the miracles and wonders and signs that God accomplished through him in your midst, just as you also know.
hunc,This man, definito consilio et præscientia Dei traditum, under the definitive plan and foreknowledge of God,per manus iniquorum affligentes interemistis:was delivered by the hands of the unjust, afflicted, and put to death.
quem Deus suscitavit, solutis doloribus inferni,And he whom God has raised up has broken the sorrows of Hell, juxta quod impossibile erat teneri illum ab eo.for certainly it was impossible for him to be held by it.
David enim dicit in eum:For David said about him:Providebam Dominum in conspectu meo semper:‘I foresaw the Lord always in my sight, quoniam a dextris est mihi, for he is at my right hand,ne commovear:so that I may not be moved.
propter hoc lætatum est cor meum,Because of this, my heart has rejoiced,et exsultavit lingua mea,and my tongue has exulted.insuper et caro mea requiescet in spe:Moreover, my flesh shall also rest in hope.
quoniam non derelinques animam meam in inferno,For you will not abandon my soul to Hell, nec dabis sanctum tuum videre corruptionem.nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption.
Notas mihi fecisti vias vitæ:You have made known to me the ways of life.et replebis me jucunditate cum facie tua.You will completely fill me with happiness by your presence.’
Viri fratres,Noble brothers, liceat audenter dicere ad vos de patriarcha David, permit me to speak freely to you about the Patriarch David:quoniam defunctus est,for he passed away and was buried,et sepultus:and his sepulcher is with us,et sepulchrum ejus est apud nos usque in hodiernum diem.even to this very day.
Propheta igitur cum esset,Therefore, he was a prophet,et sciret quia jurejurando jurasset illi Deus de fructu lumbi ejus sedere super sedem ejus:for he knew that God had sworn an oath to him about the fruit of his loins, about the One who would sit upon his throne.
providens locutus est de resurrectione Christi,Foreseeing this, quiahe was speaking about the Resurrection of the Christ.neque derelictus est in inferno,For he was neither left behind in Hell, neque caro ejus vidit corruptionem.nor did his flesh see corruption.
Hunc Jesum resuscitavit Deus,This Jesus, God raised up again, cujus omnes nos testes sumus.and of this we are all witnesses.
Dextera igitur Dei exaltatus,Therefore,et promissione Spiritus Sancti accepta a Patre, being exalted to the right hand of God,effudit hunc, and having received from the Father the Promise of the Holy Spirit, quem vos videtishe poured this out,et auditis.just as you now see and hear.
Non enim David ascendit in cælum:For David did not ascend into heaven.dixit autem ipse:But he himself said:Dixit Dominus Domino meo:‘The Lord said to my Lord:Sede a dextris meis,Sit at my right hand,
donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum.until I make your enemies your footstool.’
Certissime sciat ergo omnis domus Israël, quia et Dominum eum et Christum fecit Deus hunc Jesum,Therefore, may the entire house of Israel know most certainly that God has made this same Jesus, quem vos crucifixistis.whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
His autem auditis,Now when they had heard these things, compuncti sunt corde, they were contrite in heart,et dixerunt ad Petrum et ad reliquos Apostolos:and they said to Peter and to the other Apostles:Quid faciemus,“What should we do,viri fratres?noble brothers?”
Petrus vero ad illos:Yet truly, Peter said to them:Pœnitentiam,“Do penance;inquit, agite, and be baptized,et baptizetur unusquisque vestrum in nomine Jesu Christi in remissionem peccatorum vestrorum:each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins.et accipietis donum Spiritus Sancti. And you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Vobis enim est repromissio,For the Promise is for youet filiis vestris, and for your sons,et omnibus qui longe sunt, and for all who are far away:quoscumque advocaverit Dominus Deus noster.for whomever the Lord our God will have called.”
Aliis etiam verbis plurimis testificatus est,And then, with very many other words,et exhortabatur eos,he testified and he exhorted them, dicens:saying,Salvamini a generatione ista prava.“Save yourselves from this depraved generation.”
Qui ergo receperunt sermonem ejus,Therefore, baptizati sunt:those who accepted his discourse were baptized.et appositæ sunt in die illa animæ circiter tria millia. And about three thousand souls were added on that day.
Erant autem perseverantes in doctrina Apostolorum,Now they were persevering in the doctrine of the Apostles,et communicatione fractionis panis, and in the communion of the breaking of the bread,et orationibus.and in the prayers.
Fiebat autem omni animæ timor:And fear developed in every soul.multa quoque prodigiaAlso,et signa per Apostolos in Jerusalem fiebant, many miracles and signs were accomplished by the Apostles in Jerusalem.et metus erat magnus in universis. And there was a great awe in everyone.
Omnes etiam qui credebant, erant pariter,And then all who believed were together,et habebant omnia communia.and they held all things in common.
Possessiones et substantias vendebant,They were selling their possessions and belongings,et dividebant illa omnibus, and dividing them to all, prout cuique opus erat.just as any of them had need.
Quotidie quoque perdurantes unanimiter in templo, et frangentes circa domos panem, sumebant cibum cum exsultatione et simplicitate cordis,Also, they continued, daily, to be of one accord in the temple and to break bread among the houses; and they took their meals with exultation and simplicity of heart,
collaudantes Deum et habentes gratiam ad omnem plebem.praising God greatly, and holding favor with all the people.Dominus autem augebat qui salvi fierent quotidie in idipsum. And every day, the Lord increased those who were being saved among them.
