Vir autem quidam erat in Cæsarea,Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, nomine Cornelius, named Cornelius, centurio cohortis quæ dicitur Italica,a centurion of the cohort which is called Italian,

religiosus,a devout man,ac timens Deum cum omni domo sua, fearing God with all his house, faciens eleemosynas multas plebi, giving many alms to the people,et deprecans Deum semper.and praying to God continually.

Is vidit in visu manifeste,This man saw in a vision clearly, quasi hora diei nona,at about the ninth hour of the day, angelum Dei introëuntem ad se,the Angel of God entering to himet dicentem sibi:and saying to him:Corneli.“Cornelius!”

At ille intuens eum,And he,timore correptus, gazing at him, dixit:was seized by fear,Quid est,and he said, domine?“What is it,Dixit autem illi:lord?”Orationes tuæAnd he said to him:et eleemosynæ tuæ ascenderunt in memoriam in conspectu Dei.“Your prayers and your almsgiving have ascended as a memorial in the sight of God.

Et nunc mitte viros in Joppen,And now,et accersi Simonem quemdam, send men to Joppa and summon a certain Simon, qui cognominatur Petrus:who is surnamed Peter.

hic hospitatur apud Simonem quemdam coriarium,This man is a guest with a certain Simon, a tanner, cujus est domus juxta mare:whose house is beside the sea.hic dicet tibi quid te oporteat facere. He will tell you what you must do.”

Et cum discessisset angelus qui loquebatur illi,And when the Angel who was speaking to him had departed, he called, vocavit duos domesticos suos, out of those who were subject to him,et militem metuentem Dominum ex his qui illi parebant.two of his household servants and a soldier who feared the Lord.

Quibus cum narrasset omnia,And when he had explained everything to them, misit illos in Joppen.he sent them to Joppa.

Postera autem die,Then, on the following day, iter illis facientibus, et appropinquantibus civitati, while they were making the journey and approaching the city, ascendit Petrus in superiora ut oraret circa horam sextam.Peter ascended to the upper rooms, so that he might pray, at about the sixth hour.

Et cum esuriret,And since he was hungry, voluit gustare.he wanted to enjoy some food.Parantibus autem illis,Then, as they were preparing it,cecidit super eum mentis excessus:an ecstasy of mind fell over him.

et vidit cælum apertum,And he saw heaven opened,et descendens vas quoddam, and a certain container descending, velut linteum magnum,as if a great linen sheet were let down, quatuor initiis submitti de cælo in terram,by its four corners, from heaven to earth,

in quo erant omnia quadrupedia,on which were all four-footed beasts,et serpentia terræ,and the crawling things of the earthet volatilia cæli.and the flying things of the air.

Et facta est vox ad eum:And a voice came to him:Surge,“Rise up,Petre:Peter!occide,Killet manduca.and eat.”

Ait autem Petrus:But Peter said:Absit Domine,“Far be it from me,quia numquam manducavi omne communelord.et immundum. For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”

Et vox iterum secundo ad eum:And the voice, again a second time to him:Quod Deus purificavit,“What God has purified,tu commune ne dixeris.you shall not call common.”

Hoc autem factum est per ter:Now this was done three times.et statim receptum est vas in cælum. And immediately the container was taken up to heaven.

Et dum intra se hæsitaret Petrus quidnam esset visio quam vidisset,Now while Peter was still hesitant within himself as to what the vision, ecce viri qui missi erant a Cornelio, which he had seen, might mean, behold, inquirentes domum Simonis astiterunt ad januam.the men who had been sent from Cornelius stood at the gate, inquiring about Simon’s house.

Et cum vocassent, interrogabant,And when they had called out,si Simon qui cognominatur Petrus illic haberet hospitium.they asked if Simon, who is surnamed Peter, was a guest in that place.

Petro autem cogitante de visione,Then, as Peter was thinking about the vision, dixit Spiritus ei:the Spirit said to him,Ecce viri tres quærunt te.“Behold, three men seek you.

Surge itaque,And so, rise up,descende, descend,et vade cum eis nihil dubitans:and go with them, doubting nothing.quia ego misi illos. For I have sent them.”

Descendens autem Petrus ad viros,Then Peter, dixit:descending to the men,Ecce ego sum, said:quem quæritis:“Behold,quæ causa est,I am the one whom you seek.propter quam venistis? What is the reason for which you have arrived?”

Qui dixerunt:And they said:Cornelius centurio,“Cornelius, vir justus et timens Deum,a centurion,et testimonium habens ab universa gente Judæorum,a just and God-fearing man, responsum accepit ab angelo sancto accersire te in domum suam, who has good testimony from the entire nation of the Jews,et audire verba abs te.received a message from a holy Angel to summon you to his house and to listen to words from you.”

Introducens ergo eos,Therefore, leading them in,recepit hospitio.he received them as guests.Sequenti autem die,Then, on following the day, surgens profectus est cum illis, rising up, he set out with them.et quidam ex fratribus ab Joppe comitati sunt eum.And some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.

Altera autem die introivit Cæsaream. And on the next day, he entered Caesarea.Cornelius vero exspectabat illos,And truly, Cornelius was waiting for them, convocatis cognatis suis et necessariis amicis.having called together his family and closest friends.

Et factum est cum introisset Petrus,And it happened that, when Peter had entered, obvius venit ei Cornelius,Cornelius went to meet him.et procidens ad pedes ejus adoravit. And falling before his feet, he reverenced.

Petrus vero elevavit eum,Yet truly, Peter, lifting him up,dicens: Surge:said: “Rise up,et ego ipse homo sum.for I also am only a man.”

Et loquens cum illo intravit,And speaking with him, he entered,et invenit multos qui convenerant:and he found many who had gathered together.

dixitque ad illos:And he said to them:Vos scitis quomodo abominatum sit viro Judæo conjungi“You know how abominable it would be for a Jewish man to be joined with, aut accedere ad alienigenam:or to be added to,sed mihi ostendit Deus neminem communema foreign people.aut immundum dicere hominem. But God has revealed to me to call no man common or unclean.

Propter quod sine dubitatione veni accersitus.Because of this and without doubt, I came when summoned.Interrogo ergo,Therefore, I ask you, quam ob causam accersistis me?for what reason have you summoned me?”

Et Cornelius ait:And Cornelius said:A nudiusquarta die usque ad hanc horam,“It is now the fourth day, to this very hour, orans eram hora nona in domo mea, since I was praying in my house at the ninth hour,et ecce vir stetit ante me in veste candida, and behold, a man stood before me in a white vestment,et ait:and he said:

Corneli,‘Cornelius, exaudita est oratio tua, your prayer has been heardet eleemosynæ tuæ commemoratæ sunt in conspectu Dei.and your almsgiving has been remembered in the sight of God.

Mitte ergo in Joppen,Therefore,et accersi Simonem qui cognominatur Petrus:send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter.hic hospitatur in domo Simonis coriarii juxta mare. This man is a guest in the house of Simon, a tanner, near the sea.’

Confestim ergo misi ad te:And so, I promptly sent for you.et tu benefecisti veniendo. And you have done well in coming here.Nunc ergo omnes nos in conspectu tuo adsumus audire omnia quæcumque tibi præcepta sunt a Domino. Therefore, all of us are now present in your sight to hear all the things that were taught to you by the Lord.”

Aperiens autem Petrus os suum,Then, Peter, opening his mouth, dixit:said:In veritate comperi quia non est personarum acceptor Deus;“I have concluded in truth that God is not a respecter of persons.

sed in omni gente qui timet eum,But within every nation,et operatur justitiam, whoever fears himacceptus est illi.and works justice is acceptable to him.

Verbum misit Deus filiis Israël,God sent the Word to the sons of Israel, annuntians pacem per Jesum Christum (hic est omnium Dominus).announcing the peace through Jesus Christ, for he is the Lord of all.

Vos scitis quod factum est verbum per universam Judæam:You know that the Word has been made known throughout all Judea.incipiens enim a Galilæa post baptismum quod prædicavit Joannes,For beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached,

Jesum a Nazareth:Jesus of Nazareth, quomodo unxit eum Deus Spiritu Sancto, whom God anointed with the Holy Spiritet virtute, and with power, qui pertransiit benefaciendo, traveled around doing goodet sanando omnes oppressos a diabolo, and healing all those oppressed by the devil.quoniam Deus erat cum illo. For God was with him.

Et nos testes sumus omnium quæ fecit in regione Judæorum,And we are witnesses of all that he did in the region of Judeaet Jerusalem, and in Jerusalem, quem occiderunt suspendentes in ligno.he whom they killed by hanging him on a tree.

Hunc Deus suscitavit tertia die,God raised him up on the third dayet dedit eum manifestum fieri, and permitted him to be made manifest,

non omni populo, not to all the people, sed testibus præordinatis a Deo:but to the witnesses preordained by God,nobis,to those of us who atequi manducavimus et bibimus cum illo postquam resurrexit a mortuis.and drank with him after he rose again from the dead.

Et præcepit nobis prædicare populo,And he instructed us to preach to the people,et testificari, and to testify that he is the One who was appointed by God to be the judge of the livingquia ipse est qui constitutus est a Deo judex vivorum et mortuorum.and of the dead.

Huic omnes prophetæ testimonium perhibent remissionem peccatorum accipere per nomen ejus omnes qui credunt in eum.To him all the Prophets offer testimony that through his name all who believe in him receive the remission of sins.”

Adhuc loquente Petro verba hæc,While Peter was still speaking these words, cecidit Spiritus Sanctus super omnes qui audiebant verbum.the Holy Spirit fell over all of those who were listening to the Word.

Et obstupuerunt ex circumcisione fideles qui venerant cum Petro,And the faithful of the circumcision, quiawho had arrived with Peter,et in nationes gratia Spiritus Sancti effusa est.were astonished that the grace of the Holy Spirit was also poured out upon the Gentiles.

Audiebant enim illos loquentes linguis,For they heard them speaking in tongueset magnificantes Deum.and magnifying God.

Tunc respondit Petrus:Then Peter responded,Numquid aquam quis prohibere potest ut non baptizentur hi qui Spiritum Sanctum acceperunt sicut et nos?“How could anyone prohibit water, so that those who have received the Holy Spirit would not be baptized, just as we also have been?”

Et jussit eos baptizari in nomine Domini Jesu Christi. And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.Tunc rogaverunt eum ut maneret apud eos aliquot diebus. Then they begged him to remain with them for some days.
