Audierunt autem Apostoli et fratres qui erant in Judæa,Now the Apostlesquoniam et gentes receperunt verbum Dei.and brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the Word of God.

Cum autem ascendisset Petrus Jerosolymam,Then, when Peter had gone up to Jerusalem, disceptabant adversus illum qui erant ex circumcisione, those who were of the circumcision argued against him,

dicentes:saying,Quare introisti ad viros præputium habentes,“Why did you enter to uncircumcised men,et manducasti cum illis?and why did you eat with them?”

Incipiens autem Petrus exponebat illis ordinem,And Peter began to explain to them, in an orderly manner, dicens:saying:

Ego eram in civitate Joppe orans,“I was in the city of Joppa praying,et vidi in excessu mentis visionem, and I saw, in an ecstasy of mind, a vision:descendens vas quoddam velut linteum magnum quatuor initiis summitti de cælo,a certain container descending, like a great linen sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners.et venit usque ad me.And it drew near to me.

In quod intuens considerabam,And looking into it,et vidi quadrupedia terræ,I considered and saw the four-footed beasts of the earth,et bestias, and the wild beasts,et reptilia, and the reptiles,et volatilia cæli.and the flying things of the air.

Audivi autem et vocem dicentem mihi:Then I also heard a voice saying to me:Surge,‘Rise up,Petre:Peter.occide,Killet manduca.and eat.’

Dixi autem:But I said:Nequaquam Domine:‘Never, quia communelord!aut immundum numquam introivit in os meum. For what is common or unclean has never entered into my mouth.’

Respondit autem vox secundo de cælo:Then the voice responded a second time from heaven,Quæ Deus mundavit,‘What God has cleansed,tu ne commune dixeris.you shall not call common.’

Hoc autem factum est per ter:Now this was done three times.et recepta sunt omnia rursum in cælum. And then everything was taken up again into heaven.

Et ecce viri tres confestim astiterunt in domo in qua eram,And behold, immediately there were three men standing near the house where I was, missi a Cæsarea ad me.having been sent to me from Caesarea.

Dixit autem Spiritus mihi ut irem cum illis,Then the Spirit told me that I should go with them, nihil hæsitans.doubting nothing.Venerunt autem mecum et sex fratres isti,And these six brothers went with me also.et ingressi sumus in domum viri. And we entered into the house of the man.

Narravit autem nobis quomodo vidisset angelum in domo sua,And he described for us how he had seen an Angel in his house, stantem et dicentem sibi:standing and saying to him:Mitte in Joppen,‘Send to Joppa and summon Simon,et accersi Simonem qui cognominatur Petrus, who is surnamed Peter.

qui loquetur tibi verba in quibus salvus eris tu,And he shall speak to you words,et universa domus tua.by which you shall be saved with your whole house.’

Cum autem cœpissem loqui,And when I had begun to speak, cecidit Spiritus Sanctus super eos,the Holy Spirit fell upon them, sicutjust as upon us also,et in nos in initio.in the beginning.

Recordatus sum autem verbi Domini,Then I remembered the words of the Lord, sicut dicebat:just as he himself said:Joannes quidem baptizavit aqua,‘John, indeed, baptized with water, vos autem baptizabimini Spiritu Sancto.but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

Si ergo eamdem gratiam dedit illis Deus,Therefore, if God gave them the same grace, sicut et nobis qui credidimus in Dominum Jesum Christum:as also to us, who have believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, ego quis eram, qui possem prohibere Deum?who was I, that I would be able to prohibit God?”

His auditis,Having heard these things, tacuerunt:they were silent.et glorificaverunt Deum,And they glorified God,dicentes:saying:Ergo et gentibus pœnitentiam dedit Deus ad vitam.“So has God also given to the Gentiles repentance unto life.”

Et illi quidem qui dispersi fuerant a tribulatione quæ facta fuerat sub Stephano,And some of them, perambulaverunt usque Phœnicen, having been dispersed by the persecution that had occurred under Stephen,et Cyprum, traveled around,et Antiochiam, even to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, nemini loquentes verbum, speaking the Word to no one, nisi solis Judæis.except to Jews only.

Erant autem quidam ex eis viri Cyprii et Cyrenæi,But some of these men from Cyprus and Cyrene, qui cum introissent Antiochiam, when they had entered into Antioch, loquebantur et ad Græcos, were speaking also to the Greeks, annuntiantes Dominum Jesum.announcing the Lord Jesus.

Et erat manus Domini cum eis:And the hand of the Lord was with them.multusque numerus credentium conversus est ad Dominum. And a great number believed and were converted to the Lord.

Pervenit autem sermo ad aures ecclesiæ quæ erat Jerosolymis super istis:Now the news came to the ears of the Church at Jerusalem about these things,et miserunt Barnabam usque ad Antiochiam.and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch.

Qui cum pervenisset,And when he had arrived thereet vidisset gratiam Dei,and had seen the grace of God,gavisus est:he was gladdened.et hortabatur omnes in proposito cordis permanere in Domino:And he exhorted them all to continue in the Lord with a resolute heart.

quia erat vir bonus,For he was a good man,et plenus Spiritu Sancto, and he was filled with the Holy Spiritet fide.and with faith.Et apposita est multa turba Domino. And a great multitude was added to the Lord.

Profectus est autem Barnabas Tarsum,Then Barnabas set out for Tarsus,ut quæreret Saulum:so that he might seek Saul.quem cum invenisset,And when he had found him, perduxit Antiochiam.he brought him to Antioch.

Et annum totum conversati sunt ibi in ecclesia:And they were conversing there in the Church for an entire year.et docuerunt turbam multam,And they taught such a great multitude, ita ut cognominarentur primum Antiochiæ discipuli, christiani.that it was at Antioch that the disciples were first known by the name of Christian.

In his autem diebus supervenerunt ab Jerosolymis prophetæ Antiochiam:Now in these days, prophets from Jerusalem went over to Antioch.

et surgens unus ex eis nomine Agabus,And one of them, named Agabus, rising up,significabat per spiritum famem magnam futuram in universo orbe terrarum, signified through the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine over the entire world,quæ facta est sub Claudio.which did happen under Claudius.

Discipuli autem,Then the disciples declared, prout quis habebat, according to what each one possessed, proposuerunt singuli in ministerium mittere habitantibus in Judæa fratribus:what they would offer to be sent to the brothers living in Judea.

quod et fecerunt,And so they did, mittentes ad seniores per manus Barnabæ et Sauli.sending it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
