Erant autem in ecclesia quæ erat Antiochiæ,Now there were, in the Church at Antioch, prophetæ et doctores, prophets and teachers,in quibus Barnabas, among whom were Barnabas,et Simon qui vocabatur Niger, and Simon, who was called the Black,et Lucius Cyrenensis, and Lucius of Cyrene,et Manahen, and Manahen, qui erat Herodis Tetrarchæ collactaneus, who was the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch,et Saulus.and Saul.

Ministrantibus autem illis Domino,Now as they were ministering for the Lord and fasting,et jejunantibus, the Holy Spirit said to them:dixit illis Spiritus Sanctus:“Separate Saul and Barnabas for me,Segregate mihi Saulum et Barnabam in opus ad quod assumpsi eos.for the work for which I have selected them.”

Tunc jejunantes et orantes,Then, imponentesque eis manus, fasting and praying and imposing their hands upon them, dimiserunt illos.they sent them away.

Et ipsi quidem missi a Spiritu Sancto abierunt Seleuciam:And having been sent by the Holy Spirit, they went to Seleucia.et inde navigaverunt Cyprum. And from there they sailed to Cyprus.

Et cum venissent Salaminam,And when they had arrived at Salamis,prædicabant verbum Dei in synagogis Judæorum.they were preaching the Word of God in the synagogues of the Jews.Habebant autem et Joannem in ministerio. And they also had John in the ministry.

Et cum perambulassent universam insulam usque Paphum,And when they had traveled throughout the entire island, even to Paphos, invenerunt quemdam virum magum pseudoprophetam, they found a certain man, a magician, a false prophet,Judæum,a Jew,cui nomen erat Barjesu, whose name was Bar-Jesu.

qui erat cum proconsule Sergio Paulo viro prudente. And he was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man.Hic, accersitis Barnaba et Saulo,This man, summoning Barnabas and Saul, desiderabat audire verbum Dei.wanted to hear the Word of God.

Resistebat autem illis Elymas magus (sic enim interpretatur nomen ejus),But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) stood against them,quærens avertere proconsulem a fide.seeking to turn the proconsul away from the Faith.

Saulus autem,Then Saul, qui et Paulus, who is also called Paul, repletus Spiritu Sancto, having been filled with the Holy Spirit, intuens in eum, looked intently at him,

dixit:and he said:O plene omni dolo et omni fallacia,“So full of every deceit and of all falsehoods, fili diaboli, son of the devil, inimice omnis justitiæ,enemy of all justice, non desinis subvertere vias Domini rectas.you never cease to subvert the righteous ways of the Lord!

Et nunc ecce manus Domini super te,And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you.et eris cæcus,And you will be blinded, non videns solem usque ad tempus.not seeing the sun for a length of time.”Et confestim cecidit in eum caligo et tenebræ:And immediately a fog and a darkness fell over him. And wandering around,et circuiens quærebat qui ei manum daret.he was seeking someone who might lead him by the hand.

Tunc proconsul cum vidisset factum,Then the proconsul, when he had seen what was done, credidit admirans super doctrina Domini.believed, being in wonder over the doctrine of the Lord.

Et cum a Papho navigassent Paulus et qui cum eo erant,And when Paul and those who were with him had sailed from Paphos, venerunt Pergen Pamphyliæ.they arrived at Perga in Pamphylia.Joannes autem discedens ab eis, reversus est Jerosolymam. Then John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem.

Illi vero pertranseuntes Pergen,Yet truly, they, traveling on from Perga, venerunt Antiochiam Pisidiæ:arrived at Antioch in Pisidia.et ingressi synagogam die sabbatorum,And upon entering the synagogue on the Sabbath day, sederunt.they sat down.

Post lectionem autem legisThen,et prophetarum, after the reading from the Law and the Prophets, miserunt principes synagogæ ad eos,the leaders of the synagogue sent to them, dicentes:saying:Viri fratres,“Noble brothers,si quis est in vobis sermo exhortationis ad plebem,if there is in you any word of exhortation to the people,dicite.speak.”

Surgens autem Paulus, et manu silentium indicens,Then Paul, rising up and motioning for silence with his hand, ait:said:Viri Israëlitæ, et qui timetis Deum,“Men of Israel and you who fear God,audite:listen closely.

Deus plebis Israël elegit patres nostros,The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers,et plebem exaltavit cum essent incolæ in terra Ægypti, and exalted the people, when they were settlers in the land of Egypt.et in brachio excelso eduxit eos ex ea,And with an exalted arm, he led them away from there.

et per quadraginta annorum tempus mores eorum sustinuit in deserto. And throughout a time of forty years, he endured their behavior in the desert.

Et destruens gentes septem in terra Chanaan,And by destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, sorte distribuit eis terram eorum,he divided their land among them by lot,

quasi post quadringentosafter about four hundred and fifty years.et quinquaginta annos:And after these things,et post hæc dedit judices,he gave them judges, usque ad Samuel prophetam.even until the prophet Samuel.

Et exinde postulaverunt regem:And later on, they petitioned for a king.et dedit illis Deus Saul filium Cis,And God gave them Saul, the son of Kish, virum de tribu Benjamin, annis quadraginta:a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

et amoto illo,And having removed him, suscitavit illis David regem:he raised up for them king David.cui testimonium perhibens,And offering testimony about him, dixit:he said,Inveni David filium Jesse,‘I have found David, the son of Jesse, virum secundum cor meum,to be a man according to my own heart, qui faciet omnes voluntates meas.who will accomplish all that I will.’

Hujus Deus ex semine secundum promissionem eduxit Israël salvatorem Jesum,From his offspring, according to the Promise, God has brought Jesus the Savior to Israel.

prædicante Joanne ante faciem adventus ejus baptismum pœnitentiæ omni populo Israël.John was preaching, before the face of his advent, a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

Cum impleret autem Joannes cursum suum,Then, when John completed his course, he was saying:dicebat: Quem me arbitramini esse,‘I am not the one you consider me to be.non sum ego:For behold, sed ecce venit post me,one arrives after me,cujus non sum dignus calceamenta pedum solvere.the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to loosen.’

Viri fratres,Noble brothers, filii generis Abraham, sons of the stock of Abraham,et qui in vobis timent Deum, and those among you who fear God,vobis verbum salutis hujus missum est.it is to you the Word of this salvation has been sent.

Qui enim habitabant Jerusalem,For those who were living in Jerusalem,et principes ejus hunc ignorantes, and its rulers, heeding neither him,et voces prophetarum quæ per omne sabbatum leguntur, nor the voices of the Prophets that are read on every Sabbath, judicantes impleverunt, fulfilled these by judging him.

et nullam causam mortis invenientes in eo,And although they found no case for death against him, petierunt a Pilato ut interficerent eum.they petitioned Pilate, so that they might put him to death.

Cumque consummassent omnia quæ de eo scripta erant,And when they had fulfilled everything that had been written about him, deponentes eum de ligno, taking him down from the tree, posuerunt eum in monumento.they placed him in a tomb.

Deus vero suscitavit eum a mortuis tertia die:Yet truly, qui visus est per dies multos hisGod raised him up from the dead on the third day.

qui simul ascenderant cum eo de Galilæa in Jerusalem:And he was seen for many days by those who went up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, qui usque nunc sunt testes ejus ad plebem.who even now are his witnesses to the people.

Et nos vobis annuntiamus eam,And we are announcing to you that the Promise,quæ ad patres nostros repromissio facta est:which was made to our fathers,

quoniam hanc Deus adimplevit filiis nostris resuscitans Jesum, has been fulfilled by God for our children by raising up Jesus, sicut et in psalmo secundo scriptum est:just as it has been written in the second Psalm also:Filius meus es tu,‘You are my Son.ego hodie genui te.This day I have begotten you.’

Quod autem suscitavit eum a mortuis,Now, since he raised him from the dead, amplius jam non reversurum in corruptionem,so as to no longer return to corruption, he has said this:ita dixit: Quia dabo vobis sancta David fidelia.‘I will give to you the holy things of David, the faithful one.’

Ideoque et alias dicit:And also then, in another place,Non dabis sanctum tuum videre corruptionem.he says: ‘You will not allow your Holy One to see corruption.’

David enim in sua generatione cum administrasset, voluntati Dei dormivit:For David, when he had ministered to his generation in accordance with the will of God,et appositus est ad patres suos, fell asleep, and he was placed next to his fathers,et vidit corruptionem.and he saw corruption.

Quem vero Deus suscitavit a mortuis,Yet truly, non vidit corruptionem.he whom God has raised from the dead has not seen corruption.

Notum igitur sit vobis,Therefore, viri fratres, let it be known to you, quia per hunc vobis remissio peccatorum annuntiatur, noble brothers,et ab omnibus quibus non potuistis in lege Moysi justificari, that through him is announced to you remission from sins and from everything by which you were not able to be justified in the law of Moses.

in hoc omnis qui credit,In him, justificatur.all who believe are justified.

Videte ergo ne superveniat vobis quod dictum est in prophetis:Therefore, be careful, lest what was said by the Prophets may overwhelm you:

Videte contemptores,‘You despisers!et admiramini,Look, and wonder,et disperdimini:and be scattered!quia opus operor ego in diebus vestris, opus quod non credetis,For I am working a deed in your days, a deed which you would not believe,si quis enarraverit vobis.even if someone were to explain it to you.’”

Exeuntibus autem illis rogabant ut sequenti sabbato loquerentur sibi verba hæc.Then, as they were departing, they asked them if, on the following Sabbath, they might speak these words to them.

Cumque dimissa esset synagoga,And when the synagogue had been dismissed, secuti sunt multi Judæorum, many among the Jews and the new worshipers were following Paul and Barnabas.et colentium advenarum,And they,Paulum et Barnabam:speaking to them, qui loquentes suadebant eis ut permanerent in gratia Dei.persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

Sequenti vero sabbato pene universa civitas convenit audire verbum Dei.Yet truly, on the following Sabbath, nearly the entire city came together to hear the Word of God.

Videntes autem turbas Judæi,Then the Jews, seeing the crowds, repleti sunt zelo, were filled with envy, and they,et contradicebant his quæ a Paulo dicebantur, blasphemantes.blaspheming, contradicted the things that were being said by Paul.

Tunc constanter PaulusThen Paul and Barnabas said firmly:et Barnabas dixerunt:“It was necessary to speak the Word of God first to you.Vobis oportebat primum loqui verbum Dei:But because you reject it,sed quoniam repellitis illud, and so judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life,et indignos vos judicatis æternæ vitæ,behold, ecce convertimur ad gentes.we turn to the Gentiles.

Sic enim præcepit nobis Dominus:For so has the Lord instructed us:Posui te in lucem gentium,‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,ut sis in salutem usque ad extremum terræ.so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

Audientes autem gentes,Then the Gentiles, upon hearing this, gavisæ sunt, were gladdened,et glorificabant verbum Domini:and they were glorifying the Word of the Lord.et crediderunt quotquot erant præordinati ad vitam æternam. And as many as believed were preordained to eternal life.

Disseminabatur autem verbum Domini per universam regionem. Now the word of the Lord was disseminated throughout the entire region.

Judæi autem concitaverunt mulieres religiosas et honestas,But the Jews incited some devout and honest women,et primos civitatis, and the leaders of the city.et excitaverunt persecutionem in Paulum et Barnabam:And they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas.et ejecerunt eos de finibus suis. And they drove them away from their parts.

At illi excusso pulvere pedum in eos,But they, shaking the dust from their feet against them, venerunt Iconium.went on to Iconium.

Discipuli quoque replebantur gaudio,The disciples were likewise filled with gladnesset Spiritu Sancto.and with the Holy Spirit.
