Eodem autem tempore misit Herodes rex manus,Now at the same time, king Herod extended his hand,ut affligeret quosdam de ecclesia.in order to afflict some from the Church.

Occidit autem Jacobum fratrem Joannis gladio. Then he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.

Videns autem quia placeret Judæis,And seeing that it pleased the Jews, apposuit ut apprehenderet et Petrum.he set out next to apprehend Peter also.Erant autem dies Azymorum. Now it was the days of Unleavened Bread.

Quem cum apprehendisset,So when he had apprehended him, misit in carcerem,he sent him into prison, tradens quatuor quaternionibus militum custodiendum, handing him over into the custody of four groups of four soldiers, volens post Pascha producere eum populo.intending to produce him to the people after the Passover.

Et Petrus quidem servabatur in carcere. And so Peter was detained in prison.Oratio autem fiebat sine intermissione ab ecclesia ad Deum pro eo.But prayers were being made without ceasing, by the Church, to God on his behalf.

Cum autem producturus eum esset Herodes,And when Herod was ready to produce him,in ipsa nocte erat Petrus dormiens inter duos milites,in that same night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, vinctus catenis duabus:and was bound with two chains.et custodes ante ostium custodiebant carcerem. And there were guards in front of the door, guarding the prison.

Et ecce angelus Domini astitit,And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near,et lumen refulsit in habitaculo:and a light shined forth in the cell.percussoque latere Petri,And tapping Peter on the side, excitavit eum,he awakened him, dicens:saying,Surge velociter.“Rise up, quickly.”Et ceciderunt catenæ de manibus ejus. And the chains fell from his hands.

Dixit autem angelus ad eum:Then the Angel said to him:Præcingere,“Dress yourself,et calcea te caligas tuas.and put on your boots.”Et fecit sic.And he did so.Et dixit illi:And he said to him,Circumda tibi vestimentum tuum,“Wrap your garment around yourselfet sequere me.and follow me.”

Et exiens sequebatur eum,And going out, he followed him.et nesciebat quia verum est,And he did not know this truth:quod fiebat per angelum:that this was being done by an Angel.existimabat autem se visum videre. For he thought that he was seeing a vision.

Transeuntes autem primam et secundam custodiam,And passing by the first and second guards, venerunt ad portam ferream, they came to the iron gate which leads into the city;quæ ducit ad civitatem:and it opened for them by itself.quæ ultro aperta est eis.And departing,Et exeuntes processerunt vicum unum:they continued on along a certain side street.et continuo discessit angelus ab eo.And suddenly the Angel withdrew from him.

Et Petrus ad se reversus,And Peter, returning to himself, dixit:said:Nunc scio vere quia misit Dominus angelum suum,“Now I know, truly, that the Lord sent his Angel,et eripuit me de manu Herodis, et de omni exspectatione plebis Judæorum.and that he rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the people of the Jews were anticipating.”

Consideransque venit ad domum Mariæ matris Joannis,And as he was considering this, he arrived at the house of Mary, qui cognominatus est Marcus, the mother of John, who was surnamed Mark, ubi erant multi congregati, et orantes.where many were gathered and were praying.

Pulsante autem eo ostium januæ,Then, as he knocked at the door of the gate, processit puella ad audiendum, nomine Rhode.a girl went out to answer, whose name was Rhoda.

Et ut cognovit vocem Petri,And when she recognized the voice of Peter,præ gaudio non aperuit januam, out of joy, she did not open the gate, sed intro currens nuntiavit stare Petrum ante januam.but instead, running in, she reported that Peter stood before the gate.

At illi dixerunt ad eam:But they said to her,Insanis.“You are crazy.”Illa autem affirmabat sic se habere. But she reaffirmed that this was so.Illi autem dicebant:Then they were saying,Angelus ejus est.“It is his angel.”

Petrus autem perseverabat pulsans. But Peter was persevering in knocking.Cum autem aperuissent,And when they had opened, viderunt eum, they saw himet obstupuerunt.and were astonished.

Annuens autem eis manu ut tacerent,But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, narravit quomodo Dominus eduxisset eum de carcere,he explained how the Lord had led him away from prison.dixitque:And he said,Nuntiate Jacobo“Inform James and those brothers.”et fratribus hæc.And going out,Et egressus abiit in alium locum.he went away to another place.

Facta autem die,Then, when daylight came, erat non parva turbatio inter milites, there was no small commotion among the soldiers, quidnam factum esset de Petro.as to what had happened concerning Peter.

Herodes autem cum requisisset eum et non invenisset,And when Herod had requested him and did not obtain him, inquisitione facta de custodibus, having had the guards interrogated, jussit eos duci:he ordered them led away.descendensque a Judæa in Cæsaream,And descending from Judea into Caesarea, ibi commoratus est.he lodged there.

Erat autem iratus TyriisNow he was angry with those of Tyre and Sidon.et Sidoniis. But they came to him with one accord,At illi unanimes venerunt ad eum, and,et persuaso Blasto, having persuaded Blastus, qui erat super cubiculum regis, who was over the bedchamber of the king, postulabant pacem, they petitioned for peace,eo quod alerentur regiones eorum ab illo.because their regions were supplied with food by him.

Statuto autem die Herodes vestitus veste regia sedit pro tribunali, et concionabatur ad eos. Then, on the appointed day, Herod was clothed in kingly apparel, and he sat in the judgment seat, and he gave a speech to them.

Populus autem acclamabat:Then the people were crying out,Dei voces,“The voice of a god,et non hominis.and not of a man!”

Confestim autem percussit eum angelus Domini,And immediately, an Angel of the Lord struck him down,eo quod non dedisset honorem Deo:because he had not given honor to God.et consumptus a vermibus,And having been consumed by worms, expiravit.he expired.

Verbum autem Domini crescebat,But the word of the Lord was increasinget multiplicabatur.and multiplying.

Barnabas autem et Saulus reversi sunt ab Jerosolymis expleto ministerio assumpto Joanne, qui cognominatus est Marcus. Then Barnabas and Saul, having completed the ministry, returned from Jerusalem, bringing with them John, who was surnamed Mark.
