Loquentibus autem illis ad populum,But while they were speaking to the people, supervenerunt sacerdotes, the priestset magistratus templi, and the magistrate of the templeet sadducæi,and the Sadducees overwhelmed them,
dolentes quod docerent populum, being grieved that they were teaching the peopleet annuntiarent in Jesu resurrectionem ex mortuis:and announcing in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
et injecerunt in eos manus,And they laid hands on them,et posuerunt eos in custodiam in crastinum:and they placed them under guard until the next day.erat enim jam vespera. For it was now evening.
Multi autem eorum qui audierant verbum, crediderunt:But many of those who had heard the word believed.et factus est numerus virorum quinque millia. And the number of men became five thousand.
Factum est autem in crastinum, ut congregarentur principes eorum, et seniores, et scribæ, in Jerusalem:And it happened on the next day that their leaders and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,
et Annas princeps sacerdotum, including Annas,et Caiphas, the high priest,et Joannes, and Caiaphas,et Alexander, and John and Alexander,et quotquot erant de genere sacerdotali.and as many as were of the priestly family.
Et statuentes eos in medio,And stationing them in the middle, interrogabant:they questioned them:In qua virtute,“By what power, aut in quo nomine fecistis hoc vos?or in whose name, have you done this?”
Tunc repletus Spiritu Sancto Petrus,Then Peter, dixit ad eos:filled with the Holy Spirit,Principes populi, said to them:et seniores,“Leaders of the people and elders, audite:listen.
si nos hodie dijudicamur in benefacto hominis infirmi,If we today are judged by a good deed done to an infirm man,in quo iste salvus factus est,by which he has been made whole,
notum sit omnibus vobis, et omni plebi Israël,let it be known to all of you and to all of the people of Israel, quia in nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi Nazareni, that in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ the Nazarene, quem vos crucifixistis, whom you crucified, quem Deus suscitavit a mortuis, whom God has raised from the dead,in hoc iste astat coram vobis sanus.by him, this man stands before you, healthy.
Hic est lapis qui reprobatus est a vobis ædificantibus,He is the stone, which was rejected by you, the builders, qui factus est in caput anguli:which has become the head of the corner.
et non est in alio aliquo salus. And there is no salvation in any other.Nec enim aliud nomen est sub cælo datum hominibus,For there is no other name under heaven given to men,in quo oporteat nos salvos fieri.by which it is necessary for us to be saved.”
Videntes autem Petri constantiam, et Joannis,Then, seeing the constancy of Peter and John, comperto quod homines essent sine litteris, et idiotæ,having verified that they were men without letters or learning, admirabantur, they wondered.et cognoscebant eos quoniam cum Jesu fuerant:And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
hominem quoque videntes stantem cum eis,Also, qui curatus fuerat, seeing the man who had been cured standing with them, nihil poterant contradicere.they were unable to say anything to contradict them.
Jusserunt autem eos foras extra concilium secedere:But they ordered them to withdraw outside, away from the council,et conferebant ad invicem, and they conferred among themselves,
dicentes:saying:Quid faciemus hominibus istis?“What shall we do to these men?quoniam quidem notum signum factum est per eos omnibus habitantibus Jerusalem:For certainly a public sign has been done through them, before all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.manifestum est,It is manifest,et non possumus negare.and we cannot deny it.
Sed ne amplius divulgetur in populum,But lest it spread further among the people, comminemur eis ne ultra loquantur in nomine hoc ulli hominum.let us threaten them not to speak anymore in this name to any man.”
Et vocantes eos,And calling them in,denuntiaverunt ne omnino loquerentur neque docerent in nomine Jesu.they warned them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
Petrus vero et Joannes respondentes,Yet truly, dixerunt ad eos:Peter and John said in response to them:Si justum est in conspectu Dei vos potius audire quam Deum,“Judge whether it is just in the sight of God to listen to you, judicate.rather than to God.
Non enim possumus quæ vidimus et audivimus non loqui. For we are unable to refrain from speaking the things that we have seen and heard.”
At illi comminantes dimiserunt eos,But they, threatening them, sent them away, non invenientes quomodo punirent eos propter populum:having not found a way that they might punish them because of the people.quia omnes clarificabant id quod factum fuerat in eo quod acciderat. For all were glorifying the things that had been done in these events.
Annorum enim erat amplius quadraginta homo, in quo factum fuerat signum istud sanitatis. For the man in whom this sign of a cure had been accomplished was more than forty years old.
Dimissi autem venerunt ad suos,Then, having been released, they went to their own,et annuntiaverunt eis quanta ad eos principes sacerdotum et seniores dixissent.and they reported in full what the leaders of the priests and the elders had said to them.
Qui cum audissent,And when they had heard it,unanimiter levaverunt vocem ad Deum, with one accord, they lifted up their voice to God,et dixerunt:and they said:Domine,“Lord,tu es qui fecisti cælum et terram, you are the One who made heaven and earth, mare et omnia quæ in eis sunt:the sea and all that is in them,
qui Spiritu Sancto per os patris nostri David pueri tui dixisti: Quare fremuerunt gentes, et populi meditati sunt inania?who, by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said: ‘Why have the Gentiles been seething, and why have the people been pondering nonsense?
Astiterunt reges terræ,The kings of the earth have stood up,et principes convenerunt in unum adversus Dominum, and the leaders have joined together as one,et adversus Christum ejus.against the Lord and against his Christ.’
Convenerunt enim vere in civitate ista adversus sanctum puerum tuum Jesum,For truly Herod and Pontius Pilate, quem unxisti, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel,Herodes et Pontius Pilatus, joined together in this city against your holy servant Jesus, cum gentibus et populis Israël,whom you anointed
facere quæ manus tua et consilium tuum decreverunt fieri.to do what your hand and your counsel had decreed would be done.
Et nunc,And now,Domine,O Lord, respice in minas eorum, look upon their threats,et da servis tuis cum omni fiducia loqui verbum tuum, and grant to your servants that they may speak your word with all confidence,
in eo quod manum tuam extendas ad sanitates,by extending your hand in cures and signs and miracles,et signa,to be done through the name of your holy Son,et prodigia fieri per nomen sancti filii tui Jesu.Jesus.”
Et cum orassent,And when they had prayed, motus est locus in quo erant congregati:the place in which they were gathered was moved.et repleti sunt omnes Spiritu Sancto,And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.et loquebantur verbum Dei cum fiducia. And they were speaking the Word of God with confidence.
Multitudinis autem credentium erat cor unum et anima una:Then the multitude of believers were of one heartnec quisquam eorum quæ possidebat, and one soul.aliquid suum esse dicebat,Neither did anyone say that any of the things that he possessed were his own,sed erant illis omnia communia.but all things were common to them.
Et virtute magna reddebant Apostoli testimonium resurrectionis Jesu Christi Domini nostri:And with great power, the Apostles were rendering testimony to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord.et gratia magna erat in omnibus illis. And great grace was in them all.
Neque enim quisquam egens erat inter illos. And neither was anyone among them in need.Quotquot enim possessores agrorumFor as many as were owners of fields or houses, aut domorum erant, selling these, vendentes afferebant pretia eorum quæ vendebant, were bringing the proceeds of the things that they were selling,
et ponebant ante pedes Apostolorum.and were placing it before the feet of the Apostles.Dividebatur autem singulis prout cuique opus erat. Then it was divided to each one, just as he had need.
Joseph autem,Now Joseph, qui cognominatus est Barnabas ab Apostolis (quod est interpretatum, who the Apostles surnamed Barnabas (which is translated as ‘son of consolation’),Filius consolationis), Levites, Cyprius genere, who was a Levite of Cyprian descent,
cum haberet agrum, since he had land, vendidit eum,he sold it,et attulit pretium, and he brought the proceedset posuit ante pedes Apostolorum.and placed these at the feet of the Apostles.
