Petrus autem et Joannes ascendebant in templum ad horam orationis nonam. Now Peter and John went up to the temple at the ninth hour of prayer.
Et quidam vir,And a certain man,qui erat claudus ex utero matris suæ,who was lame from his mother’s womb, bajulabatur:was being carried in.quem ponebant quotidie ad portam templi,They would lay him every day at the gate of the temple,quæ dicitur Speciosa, which is called the Beautiful,ut peteret eleemosynam ab introëuntibus in templum.so that he might request alms from those entering into the temple.
Is cum vidisset Petrum et Joannem incipientes introire in templum,And this man, when he had seen Peter and John beginning to enter the temple, rogabat ut eleemosynam acciperet.was begging, so that he might receive alms.
Intuens autem in eum Petrus cum Joanne,Then Peter and John, gazing at him, dixit:said,Respice in nos.“Look at us.”
At ille intendebat in eos,And he looked intently at them, sperans se aliquid accepturum ab eis.hoping that he might receive something from them.
Petrus autem dixit:But Peter said:Argentum et aurum non est mihi:“Silver and gold is not mine.quod autem habeo,But what I have, hoc tibi do:I give to you.in nomine Jesu Christi Nazareni surge,In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,et ambula.rise up and walk.”
Et apprehensa manu ejus dextera,And taking him by the right hand, allevavit eum,he lifted him up.et protinus consolidatæ sunt bases ejus et plantæ.And immediately his legs and feet were strengthened.
Et exiliens stetit, et ambulabat:And leaping up, he stood and walked around.et intravit cum illis in templum ambulans,And he entered with them into the temple,et exiliens, et laudans Deum.walking and leaping and praising God.
Et vidit omnis populus eum ambulantem et laudantem Deum. And all the people saw him walking and praising God.
Cognoscebant autem illum,And they recognized him, quod ipse erat qui ad eleemosynam sedebat ad Speciosam portam templi:that he was the same one who was sitting for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple.et impleti sunt stupore et extasi in eo quod contigerat illi. And they were filled with awe and amazement at what had happened to him.
Cum teneret autem Petrum et Joannem,Then, as he held on to Peter and John, cucurrit omnis populus ad eos ad porticum quæ appellatur Salomonis, all the people ran to them at the portico, which is called Solomon’s,stupentes.in astonishment.
Videns autem Petrus,But Peter, respondit ad populum:seeing this,Viri Israëlitæ,responded to the people:quid miramini in hoc,“Men of Israel, aut nos quid intuemini, why do you wonder at this?quasi nostra virtuteOr why do you stare at us,aut potestate fecerimus hunc ambulare?as if it were by our own strength or power that we caused this man to walk?
Deus Abraham,The God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob,et Deus Isaac, the God of our fathers,et Deus Jacob, has glorified his Son Jesus,Deus patrum nostrorum glorificavit filium suum Jesum, whom you, quem vos quidem tradidistis, indeed,et negastis ante faciem Pilati, handed over and denied before the face of Pilate, judicante illo dimitti.when he was giving judgment to release him.
Vos autem sanctum et justum negastis,Then you denied the Holy and Just One,et petistis virum homicidam donari vobis:and petitioned for a murderous man to be given to you.
auctorem vero vitæ interfecistis,Truly, it was the Author of Life whom you put to death, quem Deus suscitavit a mortuis, whom God raised from the dead, cujus nos testes sumus.to whom we are witnesses.
Et in fide nominis ejus,And by faith in his name, hunc quem vos vidistis et nostis, this man, confirmavit nomen ejus:whom you have seenet fides, and known,quæ per eum est,has confirmed his name.dedit integram sanitatem istam in conspectu omnium vestrum. And faith through him has given this man complete health in the sight of you all.
Et nunc,And now, fratres, brothers, scio quia per ignorantiam fecistis,I know that you did this through ignorance, sicut et principes vestri.just as your leaders also did.
Deus autem, quæ prænuntiavit per os omnium prophetarum, pati Christum suum,But in this way God has fulfilled the things that he announced beforehand through the mouth of all the Prophets:sic implevit.that his Christ would suffer.
Pœnitemini igiturTherefore,et convertimini, repent and be converted,ut deleantur peccata vestra:so that your sins may be wiped away.
ut cum venerint tempora refrigerii a conspectu Domini,And then, when the time of consolation will have arrived from the presence of the Lord,et miserit eum qui prædicatus est vobis,he will send the One who was foretold to you,Jesum Christum,Jesus Christ,
quem oportet quidem cælum suscipere usque in tempora restitutionis omnium quæ locutus est Deus per os sanctorum suorum a sæculo prophetarum.whom heaven certainly must take up, until the time of the restoration of all things, which God has spoken of by the mouth of his holy prophets, from ages past.
Moyses quidem dixit:Indeed, Moses said:Quoniam prophetam suscitabit vobis Dominus Deus vester de fratribus vestris,‘For the Lord your God shall raise up a Prophet for you from your brothers, one like me;tamquam me: ipsum audietis juxta omnia quæcumque locutus fuerit vobis.the same shall you listen to according to everything whatsoever that he shall speak to you.
Erit autem:And this shall be:omnis anima quæ non audierit prophetam illum, exterminabitur de plebe.every soul who will not listen to that Prophet shall be exterminated from the people.’
Et omnes prophetæ,And all the prophets who have spoken,a Samuel et deinceps, from Samuelqui locuti sunt, and thereafter, annuntiaverunt dies istos.have announced these days.
Vos estis filii prophetarum,You are sons of the prophetset testamenti quod disposuit Deus ad patres nostros, and of the testament which God has appointed for our fathers, dicens ad Abraham:saying to Abraham:Et in semine tuo benedicentur omnes familiæ terræ.‘And by your offspring all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’
Vobis primum Deus suscitans filium suum,God raised up his Son and sent him first to you, misit eum benedicentem vobis:to bless you,ut convertat se unusquisque a nequitia sua.so that each one may turn himself away from his wickedness.”
