In diebus illis,In those days, crescente numero discipulorum,as the number of disciples was increasing, factum est murmur Græcorum adversus Hebræos,there occurred a murmuring of the Greeks against the Hebrews,eo quod despicerentur in ministerio quotidiano viduæ eorum.because their widows were treated with disdain in the daily ministration.
Convocantes autem duodecim multitudinem discipulorum,And so the twelve, dixerunt:calling together the multitude of the disciples,Non est æquum nos derelinquere verbum Dei,said:et ministrare mensis.“It is not fair for us to leave behind the Word of God to serve at tables also.
Considerate ergo,Therefore, fratres, brothers, viros ex vobis boni testimonii septem, search among yourselves for seven men of good testimony, plenos Spiritu Sancto et sapientia, filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom, quos constituamus super hoc opus.whom we may appoint over this work.
Nos vero orationiYet truly,et ministerio verbi instantes erimus.we will be continually in prayer and in the ministry of the Word.”
Et placuit sermo coram omni multitudine. And the plan pleased the entire multitude.Et elegerunt Stephanum,And they chose Stephen, virum plenum fide et Spiritu Sancto, et Philippum, et Prochorum,a man filled with faith and with the Holy Spirit,et Nicanorem, et Timonem, et Parmenam, and Philip and Prochorus and Nicanor and Timon and Parmenas and Nicolas,et Nicolaum advenam Antiochenum.a new arrival from Antioch.
Hos statuerunt ante conspectum Apostolorum:These they set before the sight of the Apostles,et orantes imposuerunt eis manus.and while praying, they imposed hands on them.
Et verbum Domini crescebat,And the Word of the Lord was increasing,et multiplicabatur numerus discipulorum in Jerusalem valde:and the number of disciples in Jerusalem was multiplied exceedingly.multa etiam turba sacerdotum obediebat fidei. And even a large group of the priests were obedient to the faith.
Stephanus autem plenus gratia et fortitudine,Then Stephen, filled with grace and fortitude, faciebat prodigia et signa magna in populo.wrought great signs and miracles among the people.
Surrexerunt autem quidam de synagoga quæ appellatur Libertinorum,But certain ones, from the synagogue of the so-called Libertines,et Cyrenensium, and of the Cyrenians,et Alexandrinorum, and of the Alexandrians,et eorum qui erant a Cilicia, et Asia, disputantes cum Stephano:and of those who were from Cilicia and Asia rose up and were disputing with Stephen.
et non poterant resistere sapientiæ,But they were not able to resist the wisdomet Spiritui qui loquebatur.and the Spirit with which he was speaking.
Tunc summiserunt viros,Then they suborned men who were to claim that they had heard him speaking words of blasphemy against Mosesqui dicerent se audivisse eum dicentem verba blasphemiæ in Moysen et in Deum.and against God.
Commoverunt itaque plebem, et seniores, et scribas:And thus did they stir up the people and the elders and the scribes.et concurrentes rapuerunt eum, et adduxerunt in concilium,And hurrying together, they seized him and brought him to the council.
et statuerunt falsos testes,And they set up false witnesses, qui dicerent:who said:Homo iste non cessat loqui verba adversus locum sanctum,“This man does not cease to speak words against the holy placeet legem:and the law.
audivimus enim eum dicentem quoniam Jesus Nazarenus hic destruet locum istum,For we have heard him saying that this Jesus the Nazarene will destroy this place and will change the traditions,et mutabit traditiones quas tradidit nobis Moyses.which Moses handed down to us.”
Et intuentes eum omnes qui sedebant in concilio,And all those who were sitting in the council, gazing at him, viderunt faciem ejus tamquam faciem angeli.saw his face, as if it had become the face of an Angel.
