Dixit autem princeps sacerdotum:Then the high priest said,Si hæc ita se habent?“Are these things so?”
Qui ait:And Stephen said:Viri fratres“Noble brothers and fathers,et patres, listen.audite:The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham,Deus gloriæ apparuit patri nostro Abrahæ cum esset in Mesopotamia, when he was in Mesopotamia, priusquam moraretur in Charan, before he stayed in Haran.
et dixit ad illum:And God said to him,Exi de terra tua,‘Depart from your countryet de cognatione tua,and from your kindred,et veni in terram quam monstravero tibi.and go into the land that I will show to you.’
Tunc exiit de terra Chaldæorum,Then he went away from the land of the Chaldeans,et habitavit in Charan.and he lived at Haran.Et inde,And later, postquam mortuus est pater ejus, after his father was dead, transtulit illum in terram istam,God brought him into this land,in qua nunc vos habitatis.in which you now dwell.
Et non dedit illi hæreditatem in ea,And he gave him no inheritance in it,nec passum pedis:not even the space of one step.sed repromisit dare illi eam in possessionem,But he promised to give it to him as a possession,et semini ejus post ipsum, and to his offspring after him,cum non haberet filium.though he did not have a son.
Locutus est autem ei Deus:Then God told him that his offspring would be a settler in a foreign land,Quia erit semen ejus accola in terra aliena, and that they would subjugate them,et servituti eos subjicient, and treat them badly,et male tractabunt eos annis quadringentis:for four hundred years.
et gentem cui servierint,‘And the nation whom they will serve, judicabo ego,I will judge,’dixit Dominus:said the Lord.et post hæc exibunt,‘And after these things,et servient mihi in loco isto.they shall depart and shall serve me in this place.’
Et dedit illi testamentum circumcisionis:And he gave him the covenant of circumcision.et sic genuit Isaac, et circumcidit eum die octavo:And so he conceived Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day.et Isaac, Jacob:And Isaac conceived Jacob,et Jacob, and Jacob, duodecim patriarchas.the twelve Patriarchs.
Et patriarchæ æmulantes,And the Patriarchs,Joseph vendiderunt in Ægyptum:being jealous, sold Joseph into Egypt.et erat Deus cum eo,But God was with him.
et eripuit eum ex omnibus tribulationibus ejus,And he rescued him from all his tribulations.et dedit ei gratiam et sapientiam in conspectu pharaonis regis Ægypti:And he gave him grace and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh,et constituit eum præpositum super Ægyptum, the king of Egypt.et super omnem domum suam. And he appointed him as governor over Egypt and over all his house.
Venit autem fames in universam Ægyptum et Chanaan,Then a famine occurred in all of Egypt and Canaan,et tribulatio magna:and a great tribulation.et non inveniebant cibos patres nostri. And our fathers did not find food.
Cum audisset autem Jacob esse frumentum in Ægypto,But when Jacob had heard that there was grain in Egypt, misit patres nostros primum:he sent our fathers first.
et in secundo cognitus est Joseph a fratribus suis,And on the second occasion, Joseph was recognized by his brothers,et manifestatum est Pharaoni genus ejus.and his ancestry was made manifest to Pharaoh.
Mittens autem Joseph,Then Joseph sent for and brought his father Jacob, accersivit Jacob patrem suum et omnem cognationem suam, with all his kindred,in animabus septuaginta quinque.seventy-five souls.
Et descendit Jacob in Ægyptum:And Jacob descended into Egypt,et defunctus est ipse, and he passed away,et patres nostri.and so did our fathers.
Et translati sunt in Sichem,And they crossed over into Shechem,et positi sunt in sepulchro, and they were placed in the sepulcher which Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, quod emit Abraham pretio argenti a filiis Hemor filii Sichem.the son of Shechem.
Cum autem appropinquaret tempus promissionis quam confessus erat Deus Abrahæ,And when the time of the Promise that God had revealed to Abraham drew near, crevit populus, the people increasedet multiplicatus est in Ægypto, and were multiplied in Egypt,
quoadusque surrexit alius rex in Ægypto, even until another king, who did not know Joseph, qui non sciebat Joseph.rose up in Egypt.
Hic circumveniens genus nostrum,This one, encompassing our kindred, afflixit patres nostros ut exponerent infantes suos, afflicted our fathers, so that they would expose their infants,ne vivificarentur.lest they be kept alive.
Eodem tempore natus est Moyses,In the same time, Moses was born.et fuit gratus Deo:And he was in the grace of God,qui nutritus est tribus mensibus in domo patris sui.and he was nourished for three months in the house of his father.
Exposito autem illo,Then, having been abandoned, sustulit eum filia Pharaonis, the daughter of Pharaoh took him in,et nutrivit eum sibi in filium.and she raised him as her own son.
Et eruditus est Moyses omni sapientia Ægyptiorum,And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians.et erat potens in verbis et in operibus suis. And he was mighty in his words and in his deeds.
Cum autem impleretur ei quadraginta annorum tempus,But when forty years of age were completed in him, ascendit in cor ejus ut visitaret fratres suos filios Israël.it rose up in his heart that he should visit his brothers, the sons of Israel.
Et cum vidisset quemdam injuriam patientem,And when he had seen a certain one suffering injury, vindicavit illum,he defended him.et fecit ultionem ei qui injuriam sustinebat,And striking the Egyptian, percusso Ægyptio.he wrought a retribution for him who was enduring the injury.
Existimabat autem intelligere fratres, quoniam Deus per manum ipsius daret salutem illis:Now he supposed that his brothers would understand that God would grant them salvation through his hand.at illi non intellexerunt. But they did not understand it.
Sequenti vero die apparuit illis litigantibus:So truly, on the following day, he appeared before those who were arguing,et reconciliabat eos in pace, dicens:and he would have reconciled them in peace,Viri, saying, fratres estis:‘Men, you are brothers.ut quid nocetis alterutrum? So why would you harm one another?’
Qui autem injuriam faciebat proximo,But he who was causing the injury to his neighbor rejected him, repulit eum, saying:dicens:‘Who has appointed you as leaderQuis te constituit principem et judicem super nos?and judge over us?
Numquid interficere me tu vis,Could it be that you want to kill me,quemadmodum interfecisti heri Ægyptium?in the same way that you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
Fugit autem Moyses in verbo isto:Then, at this word, Moses fled.et factus est advena in terra Madian,And he became a foreigner in the land of Midian, ubi generavit filios duos.where he produced two sons.
Et expletis annis quadraginta, apparuit illi in deserto montis Sina angelus in igne flammæ rubi. And when forty years were completed, there appeared to him, in the desert of Mount Sinai, an Angel, in a flame of fire in a bush.
Moyses autem videns,And upon seeing this, admiratus est visum.Moses was amazed at the sight.Et accedente illo ut consideraret,And as he drew near in order to gaze at it,facta est ad eum vox Domini, the voice of the Lord came to him, dicens:saying:
Ego sum Deus patrum tuorum,‘I am the God of your fathers:Deus Abraham, the God of Abraham,Deus Isaac, the God of Isaac,et Deus Jacob.and the God of Jacob.’Tremefactus autem Moyses,And Moses, being made to tremble, non audebat considerare.did not dare to look.
Dixit autem illi Dominus:But the Lord said to him:Solve calceamentum pedum tuorum:‘Loosen the shoes from your feet.locus enim in quo stas, terra sancta est.For the place in which you stand is holy ground.
Videns vidi afflictionem populi mei qui est in Ægypto,Certainly, I have seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt,et gemitum eorum audivi, and I have heard their groaning.et descendi liberare eos.And so, I am coming down to free them.Et nunc veni, et mittam te in Ægyptum. And now, go forth and I will send you into Egypt.’
Hunc Moysen,This Moses, quem negaverunt, dicentes:whom they rejected by saying,Quis te constituit principem et judicem?‘Who has appointed you as leader and judge?’hunc Deus principem et redemptorem misit,is the one God sent to be leader and redeemer, cum manu angeli qui apparuit illi in rubo.by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Hic eduxit illos faciens prodigia et signa in terra Ægypti,This man led them out, accomplishing signs and wonders in the land of Egypt,et in rubro mari, and at the Red Sea,et in deserto annis quadraginta.and in the desert, for forty years.
Hic est Moyses,This is Moses, qui dixit filiis Israël:who said to the sons of Israel:Prophetam suscitabit vobis Deus de fratribus vestris,‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own brothers.tamquam me: ipsum audietis. You shall listen to him.’
Hic est qui fuit in ecclesia in solitudine cum angelo,This is he who was in the Church in the wilderness, qui loquebatur ei in monte Sina, with the Angel who was speaking to him on Mount Sinai,et cum patribus nostris:and with our fathers.qui accepit verba vitæ dare nobis. It is he who received the words of life to give to us.
Cui noluerunt obedire patres nostri:It is he whom our fathers were not willing to obey.sed repulerunt,Instead, they rejected him,et aversi sunt cordibus suis in Ægyptum, and in their hearts they turned away toward Egypt,
dicentes ad Aaron:saying to Aaron:Fac nobis deos qui præcedant nos:‘Make gods for us, which may go before us.Moyses enim hic,For this Moses, qui eduxit nos de terra Ægypti, who led us away from the land of Egypt, nescimus quid factum sit ei.we do not know what has happened to him.’
Et vitulum fecerunt in diebus illis,And so they fashioned a calf in those days,et obtulerunt hostiam simulacro, and they offered sacrifices to an idol,et lætabantur in operibus manuum suarum.and they rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
Convertit autem Deus,Then God turned,et tradidit eos servire militiæ cæli,and he handed them over, sicut scriptum est in libro prophetarum:to subservience to the armies of heaven,Numquid victimasjust as it was written in the Book of the Prophets:et hostias obtulistis mihi annis quadraginta in deserto,‘Did you not offer victims and sacrifices to me for forty years in the desert, domus Israël?O house of Israel?
Et suscepistis tabernaculum Moloch,And yet you took up for yourselves the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan,et sidus dei vestri Rempham, figures which you yourselves formed in order to adore them.figuras quas fecistis adorare eas:And so I will carry you away,et transferam vos trans Babylonem.beyond Babylon.’
Tabernaculum testimonii fuit cum patribus nostris in deserto,The tabernacle of the testimony was with our fathers in the desert, sicut disposuit illis Deus loquens ad Moysen, just as God ordained for them, speaking to Moses,ut faceret illud secundum formam quam viderat.so that he would make it according to the form that he had seen.
Quod et induxerunt, suscipientes patres nostri cum Jesu in possessionem gentium quas expulit Deus a facie patrum nostrorum, usque in diebus David,But our fathers, receiving it, also brought it, with Joshua, into the land of the Gentiles, whom God expelled before the face of our fathers, even until the days of David,
qui invenit gratiam ante Deum, who found grace before Godet petiit ut inveniret tabernaculum Deo Jacob.and who asked that he might obtain a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
Salomon autem ædificavit illi domum. But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
Sed non Excelsus in manufactis habitat,Yet the Most High does not live in houses built by hands, sicut propheta dicit:just as he said through the prophet:
Cælum mihi sedes est:‘Heaven is my throne, terra autem scabellum pedum meorum.and the earth is my footstool.Quam domum ædificabitis mihi? What kind of house would you build for me?dicit Dominus:says the Lord.aut quis locus requietionis meæ est?And which is my resting place?
Nonne manus mea fecit hæc omnia?Has not my hand made all these things?’
Dura cervice, et incircumcisis cordibus et auribus,Stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, vos semper Spiritui Sancto resistitis:you ever resist the Holy Spirit.sicut patres vestri,Just as your fathers did,ita et vos.so also do you do.
Quem prophetarum non sunt persecuti patres vestri?Which of the Prophets have your fathers not persecuted?et occiderunt eos qui prænuntiabant de adventu Justi,And they killed those who foretold the advent of the Just One.cujus vos nunc proditores et homicidæ fuistis:And you have now become the betrayers and murderers of him.
qui accepistis legem in dispositione angelorum,You received the law by the actions of Angels,et non custodistis.and yet you have not kept it.”
Audientes autem hæc,Then, upon hearing these things, dissecabantur cordibus suis, they were deeply wounded in their hearts,et stridebant dentibus in eum.and they gnashed their teeth at him.
Cum autem esset plenus Spiritu Sancto,But he, being filled with the Holy Spirit, intendens in cælum, and gazing intently toward heaven, vidit gloriam Dei, et Jesum stantem a dextris Dei.saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.Et ait:And he said,Ecce video cælos apertos,“Behold, I see the heavens opened,et Filium hominis stantem a dextris Dei.and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.”
Exclamantes autem voce magna continuerunt aures suas,Then they, crying out with a loud voice, blocked their ears and,et impetum fecerunt unanimiter in eum.with one accord, rushed violently toward him.
Et ejicientes eum extra civitatem,And driving him out, beyond the city, lapidabant:they stoned him.et testes deposuerunt vestimenta sua secus pedes adolescentis qui vocabatur Saulus. And witnesses placed their garments beside the feet of a youth, who was called Saul.
Et lapidabant Stephanum invocantem,And as they were stoning Stephen,et dicentem:he called out and said,Domine Jesu,“Lord Jesus, suscipe spiritum meum.receive my spirit.”
Positis autem genibus,Then, having been brought to his knees, clamavit voce magna, dicens:he cried out with a loud voice,Domine, saying,ne statuas illis hoc peccatum.“Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”Et cum hoc dixisset,And when he had said this, obdormivit in Domino.he fell asleep in the Lord.Saulus autem erat consentiens neci ejus. And Saul was consenting to his murder.
