Facta est autem in illa die persecutio magna in ecclesia quæ erat Jerosolymis,Now in those days, there occurred a great persecution against the Church at Jerusalem.et omnes dispersi sunt per regiones Judææ et Samariæ præter Apostolos. And they were all dispersed throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the Apostles.
Curaverunt autem Stephanum viri timorati,But God-fearing men arranged for Stephen’s funeral,et fecerunt planctum magnum super eum.and they made a great mourning over him.
Saulus autem devastabat ecclesiam per domos intrans,Then Saul was laying waste to the Church by entering throughout the houses,et trahens viros ac mulieres, and dragging away men and women, tradebat in custodiam.and committing them to prison.
Igitur qui dispersi erant pertransibant,Therefore, those who had been dispersed were traveling around, evangelizantes verbum Dei.evangelizing the Word of God.
Philippus autem descendens in civitatem Samariæ,Now Philip, descending to a city of Samaria,prædicabat illis Christum.was preaching Christ to them.
Intendebant autem turbæ his quæ a Philippo dicebantur,And the crowd was listening intentlyunanimiter audientes, and with one accord to those things which were being said by Philip,et videntes signa quæ faciebat.and they were watching the signs which he was accomplishing.
Multi enim eorum qui habebant spiritus immundos,For many of them had unclean spirits, clamantes voce magna exibant.and,Multi autem paralyticicrying out with a loud voice,et claudi curati sunt.these departed from them.
Factum est ergo gaudium magnum in illa civitate. And many of the paralytics and the lame were cured.
Vir autem quidam nomine Simon,Therefore, there was great gladness in that city.qui ante fuerat in civitate magus,Now there was a certain man named Simon, seducens gentem Samariæ,who formerly had been a magician in that city, dicens se esse aliquem magnum:seducing the people of Samaria, claiming himself to be someone great.
cui auscultabant omnes a minimo usque ad maximum,And to all those who would listen, from the least even to the greatest, dicentes:he was saying:Hic est virtus Dei,“Here is the power of God,quæ vocatur magna.which is called great.”
Attendebant autem eum:And they were attentive to him because, propter quod multo tempore magiis suis dementasset eos.for a long time, he had deluded them with his magic.
Cum vero credidissent Philippo evangelizanti de regno Dei,Yet truly, once they had believed Philip, who was evangelizing the kingdom of God,in nomine Jesu Christi baptizabantur viri ac mulieres.both men and women were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
Tunc Simon et ipse credidit:Then Simon himself also believed and,et cum baptizatus esset, when he had been baptized, adhærebat Philippo.he adhered to Philip. And now,Videns etiam signa et virtutes maximas fieri, seeing also the greatest signs and miracles being wrought, stupens admirabatur.he was amazed and stupefied.
Cum autem audissent Apostoli qui erant Jerosolymis,Now when the Apostles who were in Jerusalem had heard that Samaria had received the Word of God,quod recepisset Samaria verbum Dei,they sent Petermiserunt ad eos Petrum et Joannem.and John to them.
Qui cum venissent,And when they had arrived, oraverunt pro ipsis ut acciperent Spiritum Sanctum:they prayed for them, so that they might receive the Holy Spirit.
nondum enim in quemquam illorum venerat,For he had not yet come to any among them, sed baptizati tantum erant in nomine Domini Jesu.since they were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Tunc imponebant manus super illos,Then they laid their hands on them,et accipiebant Spiritum Sanctum.and they received the Holy Spirit.
Cum vidisset autem Simon quia per impositionem manus Apostolorum daretur Spiritus Sanctus,But when Simon had seen that, by the imposition of the hands of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit was given, obtulit eis pecuniam,he offered them money,
dicens:saying,Date et mihi hanc potestatem,“Give this power to me also,ut cuicumque imposuero manus,so that on whomever I will lay my hands, accipiat Spiritum Sanctum.he may receive the Holy Spirit.”Petrus autem dixit ad eum:But Peter said to him:
Pecunia tua tecum sit in perditionem:“Let your money be with you in perdition, quoniam donum Dei existimasti pecunia possideri.for you have supposed that a gift of God might be possessed by money.
Non est tibi pars neque sors in sermone isto:There is no part or place for you in this matter.cor enim tuum non est rectum coram Deo.For your heart is not upright in the sight of God.
Pœnitentiam itaque age ab hac nequitia tua:And so, repent from this, your wickedness,et roga Deum, and beg God,si forte remittatur tibi hæc cogitatio cordis tui.so that perhaps this plan of your heart might be forgiven you.
In felle enim amaritudinis, et obligatione iniquitatis, video te esse. For I perceive you to be in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.”
Respondens autem Simon, dixit:Then Simon responded by saying,Precamini vos pro me ad Dominum, ut nihil veniat super me horum quæ dixistis.“Pray for me to the Lord, so that nothing of what you have said may happen to me.”
Et illi quidem testificati,And indeed,et locuti verbum Domini, after testifying and speaking the Word of the Lord, redibant Jerosolymam, they returned to Jerusalem,et multis regionibus Samaritanorum evangelizabant.and they evangelized the many regions of the Samaritans.
Angelus autem Domini locutus est ad Philippum,Now an Angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, dicens:saying,Surge,“Rise upet vade contra meridianum, and go toward the south,ad viam quæ descendit ab Jerusalem in Gazam:to the way which descends from Jerusalem into Gaza,hæc est deserta.where there is a desert.”
Et surgens abiit. And rising up, he went.Et ecce vir Æthiops,And behold, an Ethiopian man, eunuchus,a eunuch, potens Candacis reginæ Æthiopum, powerful under Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, qui erat super omnes gazas ejus, who was over all her treasures, venerat adorare in Jerusalem:had arrived in Jerusalem to worship.
et revertebatur sedens super currum suum,And while returning, legensque Isaiam prophetam.he was sitting upon his chariot and reading from the prophet Isaiah.
Dixit autem Spiritus Philippo:Then the Spirit said to Philip,Accede,“Draw nearet adjunge te ad currum istum.and join yourself to this chariot.”
Accurrens autem Philippus,And Philip, hurrying, audivit eum legentem Isaiam prophetam, heard him reading from the prophet Isaiah,et dixit:and he said,Putasne intelligis quæ legis?“Do you think that you understand what you are reading?”
Qui ait:And he said,Et quomodo possum,“But how can I,si non aliquis ostenderit mihi?unless someone will have revealed it to me?”Rogavitque Philippum ut ascenderet,And he asked Philip to climb upet sederet secum.and sit with him.
Locus autem Scripturæ quem legebat, erat hic:Now the place in Scripture that he was reading was this:Tamquam ovis ad occisionem ductus est:“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter.et sicut agnus coram tondente se, sine voce,And like a lamb silent before his shearer, sic non aperuit os suum.so he opened not his mouth.
In humilitate judicium ejus sublatum est.He endured his judgment with humility.Generationem ejus quis enarrabit? quoniam tolletur de terra vita ejus.Who of his generation shall describe how his life was taken away from the earth?”
Respondens autem eunuchus Philippo,Then the eunuch responded to Philip, dixit:saying:Obsecro te,“I beg you,de quo propheta dicit hoc?about whom is the prophet saying this?de se,About himself,an de alio aliquo?or about someone else?”
Aperiens autem Philippus os suum,Then Philip,et incipiens a Scriptura ista, opening his mouth and beginning from this Scripture, evangelizavit illi Jesum.evangelized Jesus to him.
Et dum irent per viam,And while they were going along the way, venerunt ad quamdam aquam:they arrived at a certain water source.et ait eunuchus:And the eunuch said:Ecce aqua:“There is water.quid prohibet me baptizari? What would prevent me from being baptized?”
Dixit autem Philippus:Then Philip said,Si credis ex toto corde,“If you believe from your whole heart, licet.it is permitted.”Et respondens ait:And he responded by saying,Credo Filium Dei esse Jesum Christum.“I believe the Son of God to be Jesus the Christ.”
Et jussit stare currum:And he ordered the chariot to stand still.et descenderunt uterque in aquam,And both PhilipPhilippus et eunuchus, and the eunuch descended into the water.et baptizavit eum.And he baptized him.
Cum autem ascendissent de aqua,And when they had ascended from the water,Spiritus Domini rapuit Philippum, the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away,et amplius non vidit eum eunuchus.and the eunuch did not see him anymore.Ibat autem per viam suam gaudens. Then he went on his way, rejoicing.
Philippus autem inventus est in Azoto,Now Philip was found in Azotus.et pertransiens evangelizabat civitatibus cunctis,And continuing on, he evangelized all the cities, donec veniret Cæsaream.until he arrived in Caesarea.
