Imitatores mei estote,Be imitators of me,sicut et ego Christi.as I also am of Christ.

Laudo autem vos fratres quod per omnia mei memores estis:Now I praise you, brothers, because you are mindful of me in everything,et sicut tradidi vobis, præcepta mea tenetis.in such a way as to hold to my precepts as I have handed them down to you.

Volo autem vos scire quod omnis viri caput, Christus est:So I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ.caput autem mulieris, vir:But the head of woman is man.caput vero Christi, Deus.Yet truly, the head of Christ is God.

Omnis vir orans, aut prophetans velato capite, deturpat caput suum.Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered disgraces his head.

Omnis autem mulier orans, aut prophetans non velato capite, deturpat caput suum:But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered disgraces her head.unum enim est ac si decalvetur. For it is the same as if her head were shaven.

Nam si non velatur mulier,So if a woman is not veiled, let her hair be cut off.tondeatur. Si vero turpe est mulieri tonderi,Truly then, if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off,aut decalvari,or to have her head shaven, velet caput suum.then she should cover her head.

Vir quidem non debet velare caput suum:Certainly, quoniam imagoa man ought not to cover his head,et gloria Dei est,for he is the image and glory of God.mulier autem gloria viri est.But woman is the glory of man.

Non enim vir ex muliere est,For man is not of woman, sed mulier ex viro.but woman is of man.

Etenim non est creatus vir propter mulierem,And indeed, man was not created for woman, sed mulier propter virum.but woman was created for man.

Ideo debet mulier potestatem habere supra caput propter angelos. Therefore, a woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the Angels.

Verumtamen neque vir sine muliere:Yet truly, man would not exist without woman, neque mulier sine viro in Domino.nor would woman exist without man, in the Lord.

Nam sicut mulier de viro,For just as woman came into existence from man,ita et vir per mulierem:so also does man exist through woman.omnia autem ex Deo.But all things are from God.

Vos ipsi judicate:Judge for yourselves.decet mulierem non velatam orare Deum?Is it proper for a woman to pray to God unveiled?

Nec ipsa natura docet vos,Does not even nature herself teach you that, quod vir quidem si comam nutriat, indeed, if a man grows his hair long, ignominia est illi:it is a disgrace for him?

mulier vero si comam nutriat,Yet truly, if a woman grows her hair long, gloria est illi:it is a glory for her, quoniam capilli pro velamine ei dati sunt.because her hair has been given to her as a covering.

Si quis autem videtur contentiosus esse:But if anyone has a mind to be contentious, nos talem consuetudinem non habemus,we have no such custom, neque ecclesia Dei.nor does the Church of God.

Hoc autem præcipio:Now I caution you, without praising, non laudans quod non in melius, about this: that you assemble together, sed in deterius convenitis.and not for better, but for worse.

Primum quidem convenientibus vobis in ecclesiam,First of all, indeed, I hear that when you assemble together in the church, audio scissuras esse inter vos, there are schisms among you.et ex parte credo. And I believe this, in part.

Nam oportet et hæreses esse,For there must also be heresies,ut et qui probati sunt, manifesti fiant in vobis.so that those who have been tested may be made manifest among you.

Convenientibus ergo vobis in unum,And so, when you assemble together as one,jam non est Dominicam cœnam manducare.it is no longer in order to eat the Lord’s supper.

Unusquisque enim suam cœnam præsumit ad manducandum,For each one first takes his own supper to eat. And as a result,et alius quidem esurit, one person is hungry, alius autem ebrius est.while another is inebriated.

Numquid domos non habetis ad manducandum,Do you not have houses,et bibendum?in which to eataut ecclesiam Dei contemnitis, and drink?et confunditis eos qui non habent?Or do you have such contempt for the Church of God that you would confound those who do not have such contempt?Quid dicam vobis? What should I say to you?laudo vos?Should I praise you?in hoc non laudo.I am not praising you in this.

Ego enim accepi a Domino quodFor I have received from the Lord what I have also delivered to you:et tradidi vobis, that the Lord Jesus, quoniam Dominus Jesus in qua nocte tradebatur,on the same night that he was handed over, accepit panem, took bread,

et gratias agens fregit, and giving thanks,et dixit:he broke it,Accipite, and said:et manducate:“Take and eat.hoc est corpus meum,This is my body, quod pro vobis tradetur:which shall be given up for you.hoc facite in meam commemorationem.Do this in remembrance of me.”

Similiter et calicem,Similarly also, the cup, postquam cœnavit, dicens:after he had eaten supper,Hic calix novum testamentum est in meo sanguine:saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.hoc facite quotiescumque bibetis,Do this, as often as you drink it,in meam commemorationem.in remembrance of me.”

Quotiescumque enim manducabitis panem hunc,For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup,et calicem bibetis, you proclaim the death of the Lord, mortem Domini annuntiabitis donec veniat.until he returns.

Itaque quicumque manducaverit panem hunc,And so, whoever eats this bread, vel biberit calicem Domini indigne,or drinks from the cup of the Lord, unworthily, reus erit corporis et sanguinis Domini.shall be liable of the body and blood of the Lord.

Probet autem seipsum homo:But let a man examine himself, and,et sic de pane illo edat,in this way, let him eat from that bread,et de calice bibat.and drink from that cup.

Qui enim manducat et bibit indigne,For whoever eats and drinks unworthily, judicium sibi manducat et bibit, eats and drinks a sentence against himself, non dijudicans corpus Domini.not discerning it to be the body of the Lord.

Ideo inter vos multi infirmiAs a result,et imbecilles, many are weak and sick among you,et dormiunt multi.and many have fallen asleep.

Quod si nosmetipsos dijudicaremus,But if we ourselves were discerning, non utique judicaremur.then certainly we would not be judged.

Dum judicamur autem,Yet when we are judged,a Domino corripimur,we are being corrected by the Lord,ut non cum hoc mundo damnemur.so that we might not be condemned along with this world.

Itaque fratres mei,And so, my brothers, cum convenitis ad manducandum, when you assemble together to eat, invicem exspectate.be attentive to one another.

Si quis esurit,If anyone is hungry, domi manducet, let him eat at home,ut non in judicium conveniatis.so that you may not assemble together unto judgment.Cetera autem,As for the rest, cum venero, disponam.I will set it in order when I arrive.
