Nolo enim vos ignorare fratres,For I do not want you to be ignorant, quoniam patres nostri omnes sub nube fuerunt, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud,et omnes mare transierunt, and they all went across the sea.
et omnes in Moyse baptizati sunt in nube, et in mari:And in Moses, they all were baptized, in the cloud and in the sea.
et omnes eamdem escam spiritalem manducaverunt,And they all ate of the same spiritual food.
et omnes eumdem potum spiritalem biberunt (bibebant autem de spiritali,And they all drank of the same spiritual drink.consequente eos,And so,petra:they all were drinking of the spiritual rock seeking to obtain them;petra autem erat Christus):and that rock was Christ.
sed non in pluribus eorum beneplacitum est Deo:But with most of them, God was not well-pleased.nam prostrati sunt in deserto. For they were struck down in the desert.
Hæc autem in figura facta sunt nostri,Now these things were done as an example for us,ut non simus concupiscentes malorum,so that we might not desire evil things, sicut et illi concupierunt.just as they desired.
Neque idololatræ efficiamini,And so,sicut quidam ex ipsis:do not take part in idolatry, quemadmodum scriptum est:as some of them did,Sedit populus manducare, just as it was written:et bibere,“The people sat down to eat and to drink,et surrexerunt ludere.and then they rose up to amuse themselves.”
Neque fornicemur,And let us not commit fornication, sicut quidam ex ipsis fornicati sunt,as some of them fornicated,et ceciderunt una die viginti tria millia.and so twenty-three thousand fell on one day.
Neque tentemus Christum,And let us not tempt Christ, sicut quidam eorum tentaverunt,as some of them tempted,et a serpentibus perierunt.and so they perished by serpents.
Neque murmuraveritis,And you should not murmur, sicut quidam eorum murmuraverunt,as some of them murmured,et perierunt ab exterminatore.and so they perished by the destroyer.
Hæc autem omnia in figura contingebant illis:Now all of these things happened to them as an example, scripta sunt autem ad correptionem nostram, and so they have been written for our correction,in quos fines sæculorum devenerunt.because the final age has fallen upon us.
Itaque qui se existimat stare,And so, whosoever considers himself to be standing, videat ne cadat.let him be careful not to fall.
Tentatio vos non apprehendat nisi humana:Temptation should not take hold of you, except what is human.fidelis autem Deus est,For God is faithful, qui non patietur vos tentari supra id quod potestis, and he will not permit you to be tempted beyond your ability. Instead, sed faciet etiam cum tentatione proventum ut possitis sustinere.he will effect his Providence, even during temptation, so that you may be able to bear it.
Propter quod,Because of this, carissimi mihi, most beloved of mine, fugite ab idolorum cultura:flee from the worship of idols.
ut prudentibus loquor,Since I am speaking to those who are prudent, vos ipsi judicate quod dico.judge what I say for yourselves.
Calix benedictionis, cui benedicimus,The cup of benediction that we bless, nonne communicatio sanguinis Christi est?is it not a communion in the Blood of Christ?et panis quem frangimus,And the bread that we break, nonne participatio corporis Domini est?is it not a participation in the Body of the Lord?
Quoniam unus panis,Through the one bread, unum corpus multi sumus,we, though many, are one body:omnes qui de uno pane participamus.all of us who are partakers of the one bread.
Videte Israël secundum carnem:Consider Israel, nonne qui edunt hostias, according to the flesh.participes sunt altaris? Are not those who eat from the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
Quid ergo? What is next?dico quod idolis immolatum sit aliquid?Should I say that what is immolated to idols is anything?aut quod idolum, sit aliquid?Or that the idol is anything?
Sed quæ immolant gentes,But the things that the Gentiles immolate,dæmoniis immolant, they immolate to demons,et non Deo.and not to God.Nolo autem vos socios fieri dæmoniorum:And I do not want you to become partakers with demons.
non potestis calicem Domini bibere,You cannot drink the cup of the Lord,et calicem dæmoniorum;and the cup of demons.non potestis mensæ Domini participes esse,You cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord,et mensæ dæmoniorum.and partakers of the table of demons.
An æmulamur Dominum?Or should we provoke the Lord to jealousy?numquid fortiores illo sumus? Are we stronger than he is?Omnia mihi licent,All is lawful to me,sed non omnia expediunt.but not all is expedient.
Omnia mihi licent,All is lawful to me,sed non omnia ædificat.but not all is edifying.
Nemo quod suum est quærat,Let no one seek for himself, sed quod alterius.but for others.
Omne quod in macello venit,Whatever is sold in the market, manducate, you may eat, nihil interrogantes propter conscientiam.without asking questions for the sake of conscience.
Domini est terra,“The earthet plenitudo ejus.and all its fullness belong to the Lord.”
Si quis vocat vos infidelium,If you are invited by any unbelievers,et vultis ire:and you are willing to go,omne quod vobis apponitur, manducate, you may eat whatever is set before you, nihil interrogantes propter conscientiam.without asking questions for the sake of conscience.
Si quis autem dixerit: Hoc immolatum est idolis:But if anyone says, “This has been sacrificed to idols,”nolite manducare propter illum qui indicavit,do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you,et propter conscientiam:and for the sake of conscience.
conscientiam autem dico non tuam,But I am referring to the conscience of the other person, sed alterius.not to yours.Ut quid enim libertas mea judicatur ab aliena conscientia? For why should my liberty be judged by the conscience of another?
Si ego cum gratia participo,If I partake with thanksgiving, quid blasphemor pro eo quod gratias ago?why should I be slandered over that for which I give thanks?
Sive ergo manducatis,Therefore, sive bibitis, whether you eat or drink, sive aliud quid facitis:or whatever else you may do,omnia in gloriam Dei facite.do everything for the glory of God.
Sine offensione estote Judæis,Be without offense toward the Jews,et gentibus, and toward the Gentiles,et ecclesiæ Dei:and toward the Church of God,
sicut et ego per omnia omnibus placeo, just as I also, in all things, please everyone, non quærens quod mihi utile est, sed quod multis:not seeking what is best for myself, but what is best for many others,ut salvi fiant.so that they may be saved.
