Sectamini caritatem,Pursue charity.æmulamini spiritualia:Be zealous for spiritual things, magis autem ut prophetetis.but only so that you may prophesy.

Qui enim loquitur lingua,For whoever speaks in tongues, non hominibus loquitur, speaks not to men, but to God.sed Deo: nemo enim audit. For no one understands.Spiritu autem loquitur mysteria.Yet by the Spirit, he speaks mysteries.

Nam qui prophetat, hominibus loquitur ad ædificationem, et exhortationem, et consolationem. But whoever prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.

Qui loquitur lingua, semetipsum ædificat:Whoever speaks in tongues edifies himself.qui autem prophetat, ecclesiam Dei ædificat. But whoever prophesies edifies the Church.

Volo autem omnes vos loqui linguis:Now I want you all to speak in tongues, magis autem prophetare.but more so to prophesy.Nam major est qui prophetat,For he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, quam qui loquitur linguis;unless perhaps he interprets, nisi forte interpretetur ut ecclesia ædificationem accipiat.so that the Church may receive edification.

Nunc autem,But now, fratres, brothers,si venero ad vos linguis loquens:if I were to come to you speaking in tongues, quid vobis prodero, how would it benefit you, nisi vobis loquar aut in revelatione, unless instead I speak to you in revelation, aut in scientia,or in knowledge, aut in prophetia,or in prophecy, aut in doctrina?or in doctrine?

Tamen quæ sine anima sunt vocem dantia,Even those things that are without a soul can make sounds, sive tibia, whether it is a windsive cithara;or a stringed instrument.nisi distinctionem sonituum dederint,But unless they present a distinction within the sounds, quomodo scietur id quod canitur, how will it be known which is from the pipeaut quod citharizatur?and which is from the string?

Etenim si incertam vocem det tuba,For example, if the trumpet made an uncertain sound, quis parabit se ad bellum?who would prepare himself for battle?

ItaSo it is with you also,et vos per linguam nisi manifestum sermonem dederitis:for unless you utter with the tongue in plain speech, quomodo scietur id quod dicitur?how will it be known what is said?eritis enim in aëra loquentes. For then you would be speaking into the air.

Tam multa, ut puta genera linguarum sunt in hoc mundo:Consider that there are so many different kinds of languages in this world,et nihil sine voce est.and yet none is without a voice.

Si ergo nesciero virtutem vocis,Therefore, if I do not understand the nature of the voice, ero ei, cui loquor, barbarus:then I shall be like a foreigner to the one with whom I am speaking;et qui loquitur, mihi barbarus.and he who is speaking will be like a foreigner to me.

SicSo it is with you also.et vos,And since you are zealous for what is spiritual, quoniam æmulatores estis spirituum, seek the edification of the Church,ad ædificationem ecclesiæ quærite ut abundetis.so that you may abound.

Et ideo qui loquitur lingua,For this reason, too, whoever speaks in tongues, oret ut interpretetur.let him pray for the interpretation.

Nam si orem lingua,So, if I pray in tongues, spiritus meus orat,my spirit prays, mens autem mea sine fructu est.but my mind is without fruit.

Quid ergo est? What is next?Orabo spiritu,I should pray with the spirit, orabo et mente:and also pray with the mind.psallam spiritu,I should sing psalms with the spirit, psallam et mente.and also recite psalms with the mind.

Ceterum si benedixeris spiritu,Otherwise, if you have blessed only with the spirit, qui supplet locum idiotæ,how can someone, quomodo dicet: Amen,in a state of ignorance, super tuam benedictionem?add an “Amen” to your blessing?quoniam quid dicas, nescit. For he does not know what you are saying.

Nam tu quidem bene gratias agis,In this case, certainly, you give thanks well, sed alter non ædificatur.but the other person is not edified.

Gratias ago Deo meo, quod omnium vestrum lingua loquor.I thank my God that I speak in tongues for all of you.

Sed in ecclesia volo quinque verba sensu meo loqui,But in the Church,utI prefer to speak five words from my mind,et alios instruam:so that I may instruct others also, quam decem millia verborum in lingua.rather than ten thousand words in tongues.

Fratres,Brothers, nolite pueri effici sensibus,do not choose to have the minds of children.sed malitia parvuli estote:Instead, be free of malice like infants, sensibus autem perfecti estote.but be mature in your minds.

In lege scriptum est:It is written in the law:Quoniam in aliis linguis“I will speak to this people with other tongues and other lips,et labiis aliis loquar populo huic:and even so,et nec sic exaudient me,they will not heed me,dicit Dominus.says the Lord.”

Itaque linguæ in signum sunt non fidelibus,And so, tongues are a sign, not for believers, sed infidelibus:but for unbelievers;prophetiæ autem non infidelibus, and prophecies are not for unbelievers, sed fidelibus.but for believers.

Si ergo conveniat universa ecclesia in unum,If then,et omnes linguis loquantur, the entire Church were to gather together as one, intrent autem idiotæ,and if all were to speak in tongues, aut infideles:and then ignorant or unbelieving persons were to enter, nonne dicent quod insanitis?would they not say that you were insane?

Si autem omnes prophetent,But if everyone prophesies, intret autem quis infidelis, and one who is ignorantvel idiota,or unbelieving enters, convincitur ab omnibus,he may be convinced by it all, dijudicatur ab omnibus:because he understands it all.

occulta cordis ejus manifesta fiunt:The secrets of his heart are then made manifest.et ita cadens in faciem adorabit Deum,And so, falling to his face, he would adore God,pronuntians quod vere Deus in vobis sit.proclaiming that God is truly among you.

Quid ergo est,What is next,fratres?brothers?Cum convenitis,When you gather together,unusquisque vestrum psalmum habet,each one of you may have a psalm,doctrinam habet,or a doctrine,apocalypsim habet,or a revelation,linguam habet,or a language,interpretationem habet:or an interpretation,omnia ad ædificationem fiant.but let everything be done for edification.

Sive lingua quis loquitur,If anyone is speaking in tongues, secundum duos, let there be only two,aut ut multum tres,or at most three,et per partes, and then in turn,et unus interpretatur.and let someone interpret.

Si autem non fuerit interpres, taceat in ecclesia:But if there is no one to interpret, he should remain silent in the church, sibi autem loquatur, et Deo.then he may speak when he is alone with God.

Prophetæ autem duo,And let the prophets speak, aut tres dicant, two or three,et ceteri dijudicent.and let the others discern.

Quod si alii revelatum fuerit sedenti,But then, if something is revealed to another who is sitting, prior taceat.let the first one become silent.

Potestis enim omnes per singulos prophetare:For you are all able to prophesy one at a time,ut omnes discant,so that all may learnet omnes exhortentur:and all may be encouraged.

et spiritus prophetarum prophetis subjecti sunt. For the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

Non enim est dissensionis Deus,And God is not of dissension, sed pacis:but of peace, sicut et in omnibus ecclesiis sanctorum doceo.just as I also teach in all the churches of the saints.

Mulieres in ecclesiis taceant,Women should be silent in the churches.non enim permittitur eis loqui,For it is not permitted for them to speak;sed subditas esse, but instead, sicutthey should be subordinate,et lex dicit.as the law also says.

Si quid autem volunt discere,And if they want to learn anything, domi viros suos interrogent.let them ask their husbands at home.Turpe est enim mulieri loqui in ecclesia. For it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church.

An a vobis verbum Dei processit? So now, did the Word of God proceed from you?aut in vos solos pervenit?Or was it sent to you alone?

Si quis videtur propheta esse,If anyone seems to be a prophetaut spiritualis,or a spiritual person, cognoscat quæ scribo vobis,he should understand these things which I am writing to you, quia Domini sunt mandata.that these things are the commandments of the Lord.

Si quis autem ignorat,If anyone does not recognize these things, ignorabitur.he should not be recognized.

Itaque fratres æmulamini prophetare:And so, brothers, be zealous to prophesy,et loqui linguis nolite prohibere.and do not prohibit speaking in tongues.

Omnia autem honeste,But let everything be done respectfullyet secundum ordinem fiant.and according to proper order.
