De iis autem quæ idolis sacrificantur,Now concerning those things that are sacrificed to idols:scimus quia omnes scientiam habemus.we know that we all have knowledge.Scientia inflat,Knowledge puffs up,caritas vero ædificat.but charity builds up.

Si quis autem se existimat scire aliquid,But if anyone considers himself to know anything, nondum cognovit quemadmodum oporteat eum scire.he does not yet know in the way that he ought to know.

Si quis autem diligit Deum,For if anyone loves God,hic cognitus est ab eo.he is known by him.

De escis autem quæ idolis immolantur,But as to the foods that are immolated to idols, scimus quia nihil est idolum in mundo,we know that an idol in the world is nothing,et quod nullus est Deus, and that no one is God,nisi unus.except One.

Nam etsi sunt qui dicantur dii sive in cælo,For although there are things that are called gods, sive in terra (siquidem sunt dii multi, whether in heaven or on earth,et domini multi):(if one even considers there to be many gods and many lords)

nobis tamen unus est Deus, yet we know that there is only one God,Pater, the Father,ex quo omnia, from whom all things are,et nos in illum:and in whom we are,et unus Dominus Jesus Christus, and one Lord Jesus Christ, per quem omnia, through whom all things are,et nos per ipsum.and by whom we are.

Sed non in omnibus est scientia. But knowledge is not in everyone.Quidam autem cum conscientia usque nunc idoli,For some persons, even now, with consent to an idol, quasi idolothytum manducant:eat what has been sacrificed to an idol.et conscientia ipsorum cum sit infirma,And their conscience, being infirm, polluitur.becomes polluted.

Esca autem nos non commendat Deo.Yet food does not commend us to God.Neque enim si manducaverimus,For if we eat, abundabimus:we will not have more, neque si non manducaverimus, and if we do not eat, deficiemus.we will not have less.

Videte autem ne forte hæc licentia vestra offendiculum fiat infirmis. But be careful not to let your liberty become a cause of sin to those who are weak.

Si enim quis viderit eum, qui habet scientiam, in idolio recumbentem:For if anyone sees someone with knowledge sitting down to eat in idolatry, nonne conscientia ejus, will not his own conscience, cum sit infirma, ædificabitur ad manducandum idolothyta?being infirm, be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols?

Et peribit infirmus in tua scientia, frater,And should an infirm brother perish by your knowledge, propter quem Christus mortuus est?even though Christ died for him?

Sic autem peccantes in fratres,So when you sin in this way against the brothers,et percutientes conscientiam eorum infirmam, and you harm their weakened conscience,in Christum peccatis.then you sin against Christ.

Quapropter si esca scandalizat fratrem meum,Because of this, if food leads my brother to sin,non manducabo carnem in æternum,I will never eat meat,ne fratrem meum scandalizem.lest I lead my brother to sin.
