Non sum liber?Am I not free?non sum Apostolus?Am I not an Apostle?nonne Christum Jesum Dominum nostrum vidi?Have I not seen Christ Jesus our Lord?nonne opus meum vos estis in Domino? Are you not my work in the Lord?
Et si aliis non sum Apostolus,And if I am not an Apostle to others, sed tamen vobis sum:yet still I am to you.nam signaculum apostolatus mei vos estis in Domino. For you are the seal of my Apostleship in the Lord.
Mea defensio apud eos qui me interrogant, hæc est:My defense with those who question me is this:
Numquid non habemus potestatem manducandi et bibendi?Do we not have the authority to eat and to drink?
numquid non habemus potestatem mulierem sororem circumducendi sicutDo we not have the authority to travel around with a woman who is a sister,et ceteri Apostoli, just as do the other Apostles,et fratres Domini, and the brothers of the Lord,et Cephas?and Cephas?
aut ego solus, et Barnabas, non habemus potestatem hoc operandi?Or is it only myself and Barnabas who do not have the authority to act in this way?
Quis militat suis stipendiis umquam?Who has ever served as a soldier and paid his own stipend?quis plantat vineam, et de fructu ejus non edit?Who plants a vineyard and does not eat from its produce?quis pascit gregem, et de lacte gregis non manducat?Who pastures a flock and does not drink from the milk of the flock?
Numquid secundum hominem hæc dico?Am I saying these things according to man?an et lex hæc non dicit?Or does the law not also say these things?
Scriptum est enim in lege Moysi:For it is written in the law of Moses:Non alligabis os bovi trituranti.“You shall not bind the mouth of an ox, while it is treading out the grain.”Numquid de bobus cura est Deo?Is God here concerned with the oxen?
an propter nos utique hoc dicit?Or is he saying this, indeed, for our sake?Nam propter nos scripta sunt:These things were written specifically for us,quoniam debet in spe qui arat, arare:because he who plows, ought to plow in hope,et qui triturat, and he who threshes,in spe fructus percipiendi.too, in hope of receiving the produce.
Si nos vobis spiritualia seminavimus,If we have sown spiritual things in you, magnum est si nos carnalia vestra metamus?is it important if we harvest from your worldly things?
Si alii potestatis vestræ participes sunt,If others are sharers in this authority over you, quare non potius nos?why are we not more entitled?Sed non usi sumus hac potestate:And yet we have not used this authority.sed omnia sustinemus,Instead, we bear all things,ne quod offendiculum demus Evangelio Christi.lest we give any hindrance to the Gospel of Christ.
Nescitis quoniam qui in sacrario operantur quæ de sacrario sunt, edunt:Do you not know that those who work in the holy place eat the things that are for the holy place,et qui altari deserviunt, cum altari participant?and that those who serve at the altar also share with the altar?
ItaSo,et Dominus ordinavit iis qui Evangelium annuntiant, too,de Evangelio vivere.has the Lord ordained that those who announce the Gospel should live by the Gospel.
Ego autem nullo horum usus sum.Yet I have used none of these things.Non autem scripsi hæc ut ita fiant in me:And I have not written so that these things may be done for me.bonum est enim mihi magis mori,For it is better for me to die, quam ut gloriam meam quis evacuet.rather than to let anyone empty out my glory.
Nam si evangelizavero,For if I preach the Gospel, non est mihi gloria:it is not glory for me.necessitas enim mihi incumbit:For an obligation has been laid upon me.væ enim mihi est,And woe to me,si non evangelizavero.if I do not preach the Gospel.
Si enim volens hoc ago,For if I do this willingly, mercedem habeo:I have a reward.si autem invitus,But if I do this reluctantly, dispensatio mihi credita est.a dispensation is granted to me.
Quæ est ergo merces mea?And what, then, would be my reward?ut Evangelium prædicans,So, when preaching the Gospel, sine sumptu ponam Evangelium,I should give the Gospel without taking,ut non abutar potestate mea in Evangelio.so that I may not misuse my authority in the Gospel.
Nam cum liber essem ex omnibus,For when I was a free man to all, omnium me servum feci,I made myself the servant of all,ut plures lucrifacerem.so that I might gain all the more.
Et factus sum Judæis tamquam Judæus,And so, to the Jews, I became like a Jew,ut Judæos lucrarer:so that I might gain the Jews.
iis qui sub lege sunt,To those who are under the law, quasi sub lege essem (cum ipse non essem sub lege) ut eos qui sub lege erant, lucrifacerem:I became as if I were under the law, (though I was not under the law) so that I might gain those who were under the law.iis qui sine lege erant,To those who were without the law, tamquam sine lege essem (cum sine lege Dei non essem:I became as if I were without the law, (though I was not without the law of God,sed in lege essem Christi) ut lucrifacerem eos qui sine lege erant.being in the law of Christ) so that I might gain those who were without the law.
Factus sum infirmis infirmus,To the weak, I became weak,ut infirmos lucrifacerem.so that I might gain the weak.Omnibus omnia factus sum,To all, I became all,ut omnes facerem salvos.so that I might save all.
Omnia autem facio propter Evangelium:And I do everything for the sake of the Gospel,ut particeps ejus efficiar.so that I may become its partner.
Nescitis quod ii qui in stadio currunt,Do you not know that, of those who run in a race, omnes quidem currunt, all of them, certainly, are runners, sed unus accipit bravium?but only one achieves the prize.Sic currite ut comprehendatis.Similarly, you must run, so that you may achieve.
Omnis autem qui in agone contendit,And one who competes in a contest abstains from all things.ab omnibus se abstinet,And they do this, of course,et illi quidem ut corruptibilem coronam accipiant:so that they may achieve a corruptible crown. But we do this, nos autem incorruptam.so that we may achieve what is incorruptible.
Ego igitur sic curro,And so I run,non quasi in incertum:but not with uncertainty.sic pugno,And so I fight, non quasi aërem verberans:but not by flailing in the air.
sed castigo corpus meum,Instead, I chastise my body,et in servitutem redigo:so as to redirect it into servitude.ne forte cum aliis prædicaverim,Otherwise, I might preach to others, ipse reprobus efficiar.but become myself an outcast.
