Paulus,Paul,Apostolus Jesu Christi per voluntatem Dei,an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God,et Timotheus frater, and Timothy, ecclesiæ Dei,a brother,quæ est Corinthi cum omnibus sanctis,to the church of God which is at Corinth, qui sunt in universa Achaia.with all the saints who are in all of Achaia:

Gratia vobis,Graceet pax a Deo Patre nostro, and peace to you from God our Fatheret Domino Jesu Christo.and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Benedictus Deus et Pater Domini nostri Jesu Christi,Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,Pater misericordiarum, et Deus totius consolationis, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation.

qui consolatur nos in omni tribulatione nostra:He consoles us in all our tribulation,ut possimus et ipsi consolari eos qui in omni pressura sunt,so that we too may be able to console those who are in any kind of distress, per exhortationem, qua exhortamur et ipsi a Deo.through the exhortation by which we also are being exhorted by God.

Quoniam sicut abundant passiones Christi in nobis:For just as the Passion of Christ abounds in us, so also, ita et per Christum abundat consolatio nostra.through Christ, does our consolation abound.

Sive autem tribulamur pro vestra exhortationeSo,et salute,if we are in tribulation, sive consolamur pro vestra consolatione,it is for your exhortation and salvation, sive exhortamur pro vestra exhortationeor if we are in consolation,et salute,it is for your consolation,quæ operatur tolerantiam earumdem passionum,or if we are exhorted, quasit is for your exhortation and salvation,et nos patimur:which results in the patient endurance of the same passion which we also endure.

ut spes nostra firma sit pro vobis:So may our hope for you be made firm, scientes quod sicut socii passionum estis, knowing that, sic eritisjust as you are participants in the suffering,et consolationis.so also shall you be participants in the consolation.

Non enim volumus ignorare vos,For we do not want you to be ignorant, fratres, brothers,de tribulatione nostra, about our tribulation,quæ facta est in Asia, which happened to us in Asia.quoniam supra modum gravati sumus supra virtutem,For we were weighed down beyond measure, beyond our strength, ita ut tæderet nos etiam vivere.so that we became weary, even of life itself.

Sed ipsi in nobismetipsis responsum mortis habuimus,But we had within ourselves the response to death,ut non simus fidentes in nobis,so that we would not have faith in ourselves, sed in Deo,but in God,qui suscitat mortuos:who raises the dead.

qui de tantis periculis nos eripuit,He has rescued us, and he is rescuing us,et eruit:from great peril.in quem speramus quoniam et adhuc eripiet,In him, we hope that he will continue to rescue us.

adjuvantibus et vobis in oratione pro nobis:And you are assisting, with your prayers for us,ut ex multorum personis,so that from many persons, ejus quæ in nobis est donationis,by that which is a gift in us,per multos gratiæ agantur pro nobis.thanks may be given through many persons, because of us.

Nam gloria nostra hæc est:For our glory is this:testimonium conscientiæ nostræ,the testimony of our conscience, quod in simplicitate cordis et sinceritate Dei,which is found in simplicity of heart and in sincerity toward God.et non in sapientia carnali,And it is not with worldly wisdom, sed in gratia Dei,but in the grace of God,conversati sumus in hoc mundo:that we have conversed with this world, abundantius autem ad vos.and more abundantly toward you.

Non enim alia scribimus vobis,For we write nothing else to you other than what you have readquam quæ legistis, and understood.et cognovistis. And I hope that you will continue to understand,Spero autem quod usque in finem cognoscetis, even unto the end.

sicut et cognovistis nos ex parte,And just as you have acknowledged us in our role, quod gloria vestra sumus, that we are your glory, sicut et vos nostra,so also you are ours,in die Domini nostri Jesu Christi.unto the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Et hac confidentia volui prius venire ad vos,And with this confidence, I wanted to come to you sooner,ut secundam gratiam haberetis:so that you might have a second grace,

et per vos transire in Macedoniam, and through you to pass into Macedonia,et iterum a Macedonia venire ad vos,and to return to you again from Macedonia,et a vobis deduci in Judæam.and so be led by you on my way to Judea.

Cum ergo hoc voluissem,Then, although I had intended this, numquid levitate usus sum? aut quæ cogito, did I act lightly? Or in the things that I consider, secundum carnem cogito,do I consider according to the flesh,ut sit apud me Est et Non?so that there would be, with me, both Yes and No?

Fidelis autem Deus,But God is faithful, quia sermo noster, qui fuit apud vos,so our word, which was set before you,non est in illo Est et Non.was not, in him, both Yes and No.

Dei enim Filius Jesus Christus,For the Son of God,qui in vobis per nos prædicatus est,Jesus Christ, per me,who was preached among you through us,et Silvanum, through myself and Sylvanus and Timothy,et Timotheum, was not Yes,non fuit Est et Non,and No;sed Est in illo fuit.but was simply Yes in him.

Quotquot enim promissiones Dei sunt,For whatever promises are of God are, in him, Yes.in illo Est:For this reason, ideo et per ipsum Amen Deo ad gloriam nostram.too, through him: Amen to God for our glory.

Qui autem confirmat nos vobiscum in Christo,Now the One who confirms us with you in Christ,et qui unxit nos Deus:and who has anointed us, is God.

qui et signavit nos,And he has sealed us,et dedit pignus Spiritus in cordibus nostris.and he has placed the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts.

Ego autem testem Deum invoco in animam meam, quod parcens vobis,But I call God as a witness to my soul, non veni ultra Corinthum: non quia dominamur fidei vestæ,that I was lenient with you,sed adjutores sumus gaudii vestri: nam fide statis.in that I did not return to Corinth:

not because we have dominion over your faith, but because we are assistants of your joy. For by faith you stand.
