Statui autem hoc ipsum apud me,But I determined this within myself,ne iterum in tristitia venirem ad vos.not to return again to you in sorrow.

Si enim ego contristo vos:For if I make you sorrowful,et quis est, qui me lætificet, then who is it that can make me glad, nisi qui contristatur ex me?except the one who is made sorrowful by me?

Et hoc ipsum scripsi vobis,And so,ut non cum venero,I wrote this same thing to you, tristitiam super tristitiam habeam,so that I might not,de quibus oportuerat me gaudere:when I arrive, confidens in omnibus vobis, add sorrow to sorrow for those with whom I ought to rejoice, quia meum gaudium, having confidence in you in all things, omnium vestrum est.so that my joy may be entirely yours.

Nam ex multa tribulatione et angustia cordis scripsi vobis per multas lacrimas:For with much tribulation and anguish of heart, non ut contristemini,I wrote to you with many tears:sed ut sciatis, not so that you would be sorrowful, quam caritatem habeam abundantius in vobis.but so that you might know the charity that I have more abundantly toward you.

Si quis autem contristavit,But if anyone has brought sorrow, non me contristavit:he has not sorrowed me. Yet,sed ex parte, ut non onerem omnes vos.for my part, this is so that I might not burden all of you.

Sufficit illi, qui ejusmodi est, objurgatio hæc,Let this rebuke be sufficient for someone like this,quæ fit a pluribus:for it has been brought by many.

ita ut e contrario magis donetis, et consolemini, ne forte abundantiori tristitia absorbeatur qui ejusmodi est.So then, to the contrary, you should be more forgiving and consoling, lest perhaps someone like this may be overwhelmed with excessive sorrow.

Propter quod obsecro vos,Because of this,ut confirmetis in illum caritatem.I beg you to confirm your charity toward him.

Ideo enim et scripsi,It was for this reason, also,ut cognoscam experimentum vestrum, that I wrote, so that I might know, by testing you,an in omnibus obedientes sitis.whether you would be obedient in all things.

Cui autem aliquid donastis,But anyone whom you have forgiven of anything,et ego:I also forgive.nam et ego quod donavi,And then, too, anyone I have forgiven,si quid donavi,if I have forgiven anything, propter vos in persona Christi,it was done in the person of Christ for your sakes,

ut non circumveniamur a Satana:so that we would not be circumvented by Satan.non enim ignoramus cogitationes ejus. For we are not ignorant of his intentions.

Cum venissem autem Troadem propter Evangelium Christi,And when I had arrived at Troas, because of the Gospel of Christ,et ostium mihi apertum esset in Domino, and a door had opened to me in the Lord,

non habui requiem spiritui meo,I had no rest within my spirit,eo quod non invenerim Titum fratrem meum, because I was not able to find Titus, my brother. So,sed valefaciens eis, saying goodbye to them, profectus sum in Macedoniam.I set out for Macedonia.

Deo autem gratias,But thanks be to God,qui semper triumphat nos in Christo Jesu, who always brings triumph to us in Christ Jesus,et odorem notitiæ suæ manifestat per nos in omni loco:and who manifests the fragrance of his knowledge through us in every place.

quia Christi bonus odor sumus Deo in iis qui salvi fiunt,For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ for God,et in iis qui pereunt:both with those who are being saved and with those who are perishing.

aliis quidem odor mortis in mortem:To the one, certainly, the fragrance is of death unto death.aliis autem odor vitæ in vitam. But to the other, the fragrance is of life unto life.Et ad hæc quis tam idoneus? And concerning these things, who is so suitable?

non enim sumus sicut plurimi,For we are not like many others, adulterantes verbum Dei,adulterating the Word of God.sed ex sinceritate, sed sicut ex Deo,But instead, we speak with sincerity:coram Deo,from God,in Christo loquimur.before God, and in Christ.
