Has ergo habentes promissiones,Therefore, carissimi, having these promises, mundemus nos ab omni inquinamento carnismost beloved,et spiritus, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and of the spirit, perficientes sanctificationem in timore Dei.perfecting sanctification in the fear of God.

Capite nos.Consider us.Neminem læsimus,We have injured no one;neminem corrupimus,we have corrupted no one;neminem circumvenimus.we have defrauded no one.

Non ad condemnationem vestram dico:I am not saying this to your condemnation.prædiximus enim quod in cordibus nostris estis ad commoriendumFor we have told you before that you are in our hearts:et ad convivendum.to die together and to live together.

Multa mihi fiducia est apud vos,Great is my confidence in you.multa mihi gloriatio pro vobis:Great is my glorying over you.repletus sum consolatione;I have been filled with consolation.superabundo gaudio in omni tribulatione nostra.I have a superabundant joy throughout all our tribulation.

Nam et cum venissemus in Macedoniam,Then, too, when we had arrived in Macedonia, nullam requiem habuit caro nostra, our flesh had no rest. Instead, sed omnem tribulationem passi sumus: foris pugnæ,we suffered every tribulation: exterior conflicts, intus timores.interior fears.

Sed qui consolatur humiles,But God, who consoles the humble, consolatus est nos Deus in adventu Titi.consoled us by the arrival of Titus,

Non solum autem in adventu ejus, and not only by his arrival, sed etiam in consolatione, qua consolatus est in vobis, but also by the consolation with which he was consoled among you.referens nobis vestrum desiderium,For he brought to us your desire, vestrum fletum, your weeping, vestram æmulationem pro me, ita ut magis gauderem.your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced all the more.

Quoniam etsi contristavi vos in epistola,For though I made you sorrowful by my epistle, non me pœnitet:I do not repent.etsi pœniteret,And if I did repent, videns quod epistola illa (etsi ad horam) vos contristavit, but only for a time, having realized that the same epistle made you sorrowful,

nunc gaudeo:now I am glad:non quia contristati estis, not because you were sorrowful, sed quia contristati estis ad pœnitentiam.but because you were sorrowful unto repentance.Contristati enim estis ad Deum,For you became sorrowful for God,ut in nullo detrimentum patiamini ex nobis.so that you might not suffer any harm from us.

Quæ enim secundum Deum tristitia est, pœnitentiam in salutem stabilem operatur:For the sorrow that is according to God accomplishes a repentance which is steadfast unto salvation.sæculi autem tristitia mortem operatur. But the sorrow that is of the world accomplishes death.

Ecce enim hoc ipsum,So consider this same idea, secundum Deum contristari vos, being sorrowful according to God,quantam in vobis operatur sollicitudinem:and what great solicitude it accomplishes in you:sed defensionem, sed indignationem, including protection, and indignation, sed timorem, and fear, sed desiderium, and desire, and zeal, sed æmulationem, and vindication.sed vindictam:In all things,in omnibus exhibuistis vos incontaminatos esse negotio.you have shown yourselves to be uncorrupted by this sorrow.

Igitur,And so,etsi scripsi vobis, though I wrote to you,non propter eum qui fecit injuriam,it was not because of him who caused the injury, nec propter eum qui passus est:nor because of him who suffered from it,sed ad manifestandam sollicitudinem nostram, but so as to manifest our solicitude, quam habemus pro vobiswhich we have for you before God.

coram Deo:Therefore, ideo consolati sumus.we have been consoled. In consolatione autem nostra,But in our consolation, abundantius magis gavisi sumus super gaudio Titi,we have rejoiced even more abundantly over the joy of Titus, quia refectus est spiritus ejus ab omnibus vobis:because his spirit was refreshed by all of you.

et si quid apud illum de vobis gloriatus sum,And if I have gloried in anything to him about you,non sum confusus:I have not been put to shame.sed sicut omnia vobis in veritate locuti sumus,But, just as we have spoken all things to you in truth, ita et gloriatio nostra, quæ fuit ad Titum, veritas facta est,so also our glorying before Titus has been the truth.

et viscera ejus abundantius in vobis sunt,And his feelings are now more abundant toward you, reminiscentis omnium vestrum obedientiam:since he remembers the obedience of you all, quomodo cum timore et tremore excepistis illum.and how you received him with fear and trembling.

Gaudeo quod in omnibus confido in vobis.I rejoice that in all things I have confidence in you.
