Notam autem facimus vobis,And so we are making known to you, fratres, brothers, gratiam Dei, quæ data est in ecclesiis Macedoniæ:the grace of God that has been given in the churches of Macedonia.

quod in multo experimento tribulationis abundantia gaudii ipsorum fuit,For within a great experience of tribulation,et altissima paupertas eorum, they have had an abundance of joy, abundavit in divitias simplicitatis eorum:and their profound poverty has only increased the richness of their simplicity.

quia secundum virtutem testimonium illis reddo,And I bear witness to them, that they were willing to accept what was in accord with their ability,et supra virtutem voluntarii fuerunt, and even what was beyond their ability.

cum multa exhortatione obsecrantes nos gratiam,For they were begging us,et communicationem ministerii, with great exhortation, quod fit in sanctos.for the grace and the communication of the ministry that is with the saints.

Et non sicut speravimus,And this is beyond what we had hoped, sed semetipsos dederunt primum Domino, since they gave themselves, first of all to the Lord, deinde nobis per voluntatem Dei,and then also to us, through the will of God,

ita ut rogaremus Titum,so much so that we petitioned Titus,ut quemadmodum cœpit, that in the same manner as he had begun, ita et perficiat in vobis etiam gratiam istam.he would also complete in you this same grace.

Sed sicut in omnibus abundatis fide, et sermone, et scientia, et omni sollicitudine, insuper et caritate vestra in nos, ut et in hac gratia abundetis. But, just as in all things you abound in faith and in word and in knowledge and in all solicitude, and even more so in your charity toward us, so also may you abound in this grace.

Non quasi imperans dico:I am speaking, not commanding.sed per aliorum sollicitudinem,But through the solicitude of others, etiam vestræ caritatis ingenium bonum comprobans.I approve of the good character of your charity.

Scitis enim gratiam Domini nostri Jesu Christi,For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, quoniam propter vos egenus factus est, cum esset dives, that though he was rich, he became poor for your sakes,ut illius inopia vos divites essetis.so that through his poverty, you might become rich.

Et consilium in hoc do:And about this, I give my counsel.hoc enim vobis utile est, qui non solum facere,For this is useful to those of you who, only a year earlier, sed et velle cœpistis ab anno priore:had just begun to act, or even to be willing to act.

nunc vero et facto perficite:So, truly now, accomplish this in deed,ut quemadmodum promptus est animus voluntatis,so that, in the same manner as your willing mind is prompted, ita sit et perficiendi ex eo quod habetis.you may also act, out of that which you have.

Si enim voluntas prompta est,For when the will is prompted, secundum id quod habet, accepta est,it receives according to what that person has,non secundum id quod non habet.not according to what that person does not have.

Non enim ut aliis sit remissio,And it is not that others should be relieved, vobis autem tribulatio, while you are troubled, sed ex æqualitate.but that there should be an equality.

In præsenti tempore vestra abundantia illorum inopiam suppleat:In this present time, utlet your abundance supply their need,et illorum abundantia vestræ inopiæ sit supplementum,so that their abundance may also supply your need,ut fiat æqualitas,in order that there may be an equality, sicut scriptum est:just as it was written:

Qui multum, non abundavit:“He with more did not have too much;et qui modicum, non minoravit.and he with less did not have too little.”

Gratias autem Deo,But thanks be to God,qui dedit eamdem sollicitudinem pro vobis in corde Titi, who has granted to the heart of Titus, this same solicitude for you.

quoniam exhortationem quidem suscepit:For certainly, he accepted the exhortation.sed cum sollicitior esset,But since he was more solicitous, sua voluntate profectus est ad vos.he went to you of his own free will.

Misimus etiam cum illo fratrem, cujus laus est in Evangelio per omnes ecclesias:And we have even sent with him a brother whose praise accompanies the Gospel throughout all the churches.

non solum autem,And not only that, sed et ordinatus est ab ecclesiis comes peregrinationis nostræ in hanc gratiam, but he was also chosen by the churches to be a companion for our sojourn in this grace,quæ ministratur a nobis ad Domini gloriam, which is ministered by us with our determined will,et destinatam voluntatem nostram:to the glory of the Lord.

devitantes hoc,So let us avoid this,ne quis nos vituperet in hac plenitudine, quæ ministratur a nobis.lest anyone disparage us over the abundance that is ministered by us.

Providemus enim bona non solum coram Deo,For we provide for what is good, not only in the sight of God,sed etiam coram hominibus.but also in the sight of men.

Misimus autem cum illis et fratrem nostrum,And we have also sent with them our brother,quem probavimus in multis sæpe sollicitum esse:whom we have proven to be frequently solicitous in many matters.nunc autem multo sollicitiorem,But now there is a greater solicitousness,confidentia multa in vos,which is greatly entrusted to you;

sive pro Tito, and whether it concerns Titus, qui est socius meus, who is a companion to meet in vos adjutor, and a helper to you, sive fratres nostri,or whether it concerns our brothers,Apostoli ecclesiarum, the Apostles of the churches, gloria Christi.it is to the glory of Christ.

Ostensionem ergo,Therefore,quæ est caritatis vestræ,in the sight of the churches,et nostræ gloriæ pro vobis, show them the proof of your charityin illos ostendite in faciem ecclesiarum.and of our glorying about you.
