Deinde post annos quatuordecim,Next, iterum ascendi Jerosolymam cum Barnaba, after fourteen years, assumptoI went up again to Jerusalem,et Tito.taking with me Barnabas and Titus.

Ascendi autem secundum revelationem:And I went up according to revelation,et contuli cum illis Evangelium, and I debated with them about the Gospel that I am preaching among the Gentiles, quod prædico in gentibus, but away from those who were pretending to be something, seorsum autem iis qui videbantur aliquid esse:lest perhaps I might run,ne forte in vacuum currerem,or have run,aut cucurrissem.in vain.

Sed neque Titus,But even Titus, qui mecum erat, who was with me,cum esset gentilis, though he was a Gentile, compulsus est circumcidi:was not compelled to be circumcised,

sed propter subintroductos falsos fratres, but only because of false brothers, who were brought in unknowingly.qui subintroierunt explorare libertatem nostram,They entered secretly to spy on our liberty, quam habemus in Christo Jesu, which we have in Christ Jesus,ut nos in servitutem redigerent.so that they might reduce us to servitude.

QuibusWe did not yield to them in subjection, neque ad horam cessimus subjectione, even for an hour,ut veritas Evangelii permaneat apud vos:in order that the truth of the Gospel would remain with you,

ab iis autem, qui videbantur esse aliquid (quales aliquando fuerint, and away from those who were pretending to be something. (Whatever they might have been once, nihil mea interest:it means nothing to me.Deus personam hominis non accipit):God does not accept the reputation of a man.)mihi enim qui videbantur esse aliquid, nihil contulerunt. And those who were claiming to be something had nothing to offer me.

Sed e contra cum vidissent quod creditum est mihi Evangelium præputii,But it was to the contrary, sicutsince they had seen that the Gospel to the uncircumcised was entrusted to me,et Petro circumcisionisjust as the Gospel to the circumcised was entrusted to Peter.

(qui enim operatus est Petro in apostolatum circumcisionis,For he who was working the Apostleship to the circumcised in Peter, operatus est et mihi inter gentes):was also working in me among the Gentiles.

et cum cognovissent gratiam,And so,quæ data est mihi, when they had acknowledged the grace that was given to me,Jacobus,Jameset Cephas, and Cephaset Joannes, and John, qui videbantur columnæ esse, who seemed like pillars, dextras dederunt mihi, gave to meet Barnabæ societatis:and to Barnabas the right hand of fellowship,ut nos in gentes,so that we would go to the Gentiles, ipsi autem in circumcisionem:while they went to the circumcised,

tantum ut pauperum memores essemus, asking only that we should be mindful of the poor, quod etiam sollicitus fui hoc ipsum facere.which was the very thing that I also was solicitous to do.

Cum autem venisset Cephas Antiochiam,But when Cephas had arrived at Antioch,in faciem ei restiti,I stood against him to his face, quia reprehensibilis erat.because he was blameworthy.

Prius enim quam venirent quidam a Jacobo,For before certain ones arrived from James, cum gentibus edebat:he ate with the Gentiles.cum autem venissent,But when they had arrived, subtrahebat,he drew apartet segregabat se,and separated himself, timens eos qui ex circumcisione erant.fearing those who were of the circumcision.

Et simulationi ejus consenserunt ceteri Judæi,And the other Jews consented to his pretense, ita ut et Barnabas duceretur ab eis in illam simulationem.so that even Barnabas was led by them into that falseness.

Sed cum vidissem quod non recte ambularent ad veritatem Evangelii,But when I had seen that they were not walking correctly, dixi Cephæ coram omnibus:by the truth of the Gospel,Si tu,I said to Cephas in front of everyone:cum Judæus sis,“If you, gentiliter vivis, while you are a Jew,et non judaice:are living like the Gentiles and not the Jews, quomodo gentes cogis judaizare?how is it that you compel the Gentiles to keep the customs of the Jews?”

Nos natura Judæi,By nature, we are Jews,et non ex gentibus peccatores.and not of the Gentiles, sinners.

Scientes autem quod non justificatur homo ex operibus legis,And we know that man is not justified by the works of the law, nisi per fidem Jesu Christi:but only by the faith of Jesus Christ.et nos in Christo Jesu credimus,And so we believe in Christ Jesus,ut justificemur ex fide Christi,in order that we may be justified by the faith of Christ,et non ex operibus legis:and not by the works of the law.propter quod ex operibus legis non justificabitur omnis caro. For no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.

Quod si quærentes justificari in Christo,But if,inventi sumuswhile seeking to be justified in Christ,et ipsi peccatores,we ourselves are also found to be sinners, numquid Christus peccati minister est?would then Christ be the minister of sin?Absit.Let it not be so!

Si enim quæ destruxi, iterum hæc ædifico:For if I rebuild the things that I have destroyed,prævaricatorem me constituo.I establish myself as a prevaricator.

Ego enim per legem,For through the law, legi mortuus sum,I have become dead to the law,ut Deo vivam:so that I may live for God.Christo confixus sum cruci.I have been nailed to the cross with Christ.

Vivo autem,I live; yet now,jam non ego:it is not I,vivit vero in me Christus.but truly Christ, who lives in me.Quod autem nunc vivo in carne:And though I live now in the flesh,in fide vivo Filii Dei, qui dilexit me,I live in the faith of the Son of God,et tradidit semetipsum pro me.who loved me and who delivered himself for me.

Non abjicio gratiam Dei.I do not reject the grace of God.Si enim per legem justitia,For if justice is through the law, ergo gratis Christus mortuus est.then Christ died in vain.
