Unde,Therefore, fratres sancti, holy brothers, vocationis cælestis participes, sharers in the heavenly calling, considerate Apostolum, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession:et pontificem confessionis nostræ Jesum:Jesus.
qui fidelis est ei,He is faithful to the One who made him,qui fecit illum, just as Moses also was, sicut et Moyses in omni domo ejus.with his entire house.
Amplioris enim gloriæ iste præ Moyse dignus est habitus,For this Jesus was considered worthy of greater glory than Moses, quanto ampliorem honorem habet domus, qui fabricavit illam.so much so that the house which he has built holds a greater honor than the former one.
Omnis namque domus fabricatur ab aliquo:For every house is built by someone, qui autem omnia creavit, Deus est.but God is the One who has created all things.
Et Moyses quidem fidelis erat in tota domo ejus tamquam famulus,And certainly Moses was faithful, with his entire house, like any servant,in testimonium eorum, quæ dicenda erant:as a testimony to those things that would soon be said.
Christus vero tamquam filius in domo sua:Yet truly,quæ domus sumus nos,Christ is like a Son in his own house.si fiduciam,We are that house,et gloriam spei usque ad finem,if we firmly retain the faithfulness and the glory of hope, firmam retineamus.even unto the end.
Quapropter sicut dicit Spiritus Sanctus:Because of this, it is just as the Holy Spirit says:Hodie si vocem ejus audieritis,“If today you hear his voice,
nolite obdurare corda vestra, harden not your hearts, sicut in exacerbatione secundum diem tentationis in deserto,as in the provocation, the very day of temptation, in the desert,
ubi tentaverunt me patres vestri:where your fathers tested me,probaverunt, even though they had seenet viderunt opera meaand examined my works for forty years.
quadraginta annis:For this reason, propter quod infensus fui generationi huic,I was enraged against this generation,et dixi:and I said:Semper errant corde. They always wander astray in heart.Ipsi autem non cognoverunt vias meas,For they have not known my ways.
sicut juravi in ira mea:So it is as I swore in my wrath:Si introibunt in requiem meam. They shall not enter into my rest!”
Videte fratres,Be cautious, brothers,ne forte sit in aliquo vestrum cor malum incredulitatis, lest perhaps there may be, in any of you, an evil heart of unbelief, discedendi a Deo vivo:turning aside from the living God.
sed adhortamini vosmetipsos per singulos dies,Instead, exhort one another every day, donec hodie cognominatur, while it is still called ‘today,’ut non obduretur quis ex vobis fallacia peccati.so that none of you may become hardened through the falseness of sin.
Participes enim Christi effecti sumus,For we have been made participants in Christ.si tamen initium substantiæ ejus usque ad finem firmum retineamus. This is only so, if we firmly retain the beginning of his substance, even unto the end.
Dum dicitur:For it has been said:Hodie si vocem ejus audieritis,“If today you hear his voice, nolite obdurare corda vestra, harden not your hearts, quemadmodum in illa exacerbatione.in the same manner as in the former provocation.”
Quidam enim audientes exacerbaverunt:For some of those listening did provoke him.sed non universi qui profecti sunt ex Ægypto per Moysen. But not all of these had set forth from Egypt through Moses.
Quibus autem infensus est quadraginta annis? So against whom was he angry for forty years?nonne illis qui peccaverunt,Was it not those who had sinned, quorum cadavera prostrata sunt in deserto?whose dead bodies lay prostrate in the desert?
Quibus autem juravit non introire in requiem ipsius,But to whom did he swear that they would not enter into his rest, nisi illis qui increduli fuerunt?except to those who were incredulous?
Et videmus,And so,quia non potuerunt introire propter incredulitatem.we perceive that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.
