Timeamus ergo ne forte relicta pollicitatione introëundi in requiem ejus,Therefore, we should be afraid, lest the promise of entering into his rest may be relinquished, existimetur aliquis ex vobis deesse.and some of you may be judged to be lacking.
Etenim et nobis nuntiatum est, quemadmodum et illis:For this was announced to us in a similar manner as to them.sed non profuit illis sermo auditus,But the mere hearing of the word did not benefit them, non admistus fidei ex iis quæ audierunt.since it was not joined together with a faith in those things that they heard.
Ingrediemur enim in requiem,For we who have believed shall enter into rest, qui credidimus:in the same manner as he said:quemadmodum dixit:“So it is as I have sworn in my wrath:Sicut juravi in ira mea:They shall not enter into my rest!”Si introibunt in requiem meam:And certainly,et quidem operibus ab institutione mundi perfectis.this is when the works from the foundation of the world have been finished.
Dixit enim in quodam loco de die septima sic:For, in a certain place, he spoke about the seventh day in this manner:Et requievit Deus die septima ab omnibus operibus suis.“And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”
Et in isto rursum:And in this place again:Si introibunt in requiem meam.“They shall not enter into my rest!”
Quoniam ergo superest introire quosdam in illam,Therefore,et ii,this is because certain ones remain who are to enter into it,quibus prioribus annuntiatum est,and those to whom it was announced first did not enter into it,non introierunt propter incredulitatem:because of unbelief.
iterum terminat diem quemdam, Hodie,Again, he defines a certain day,in David dicendo, after so much time, post tantum temporis, saying in David, “Today,”sicut supra dictum est:just as it was stated above,Hodie si vocem ejus audieritis,“If today you hear his voice, nolite obdurare corda vestra.harden not your hearts.”
Nam si eis Jesus requiem præstitisset,For if Jesus had offered them rest, numquam de alia loqueretur,he would never have spoken, posthac, afterward, die.about another day.
Itaque relinquitur sabbatismus populo Dei.And so, there remains a Sabbath of rest for the people of God.
Qui enim ingressus est in requiem ejus,For whoever has entered into his rest, etiam ipse requievit ab operibus suis, the same has also rested from his works, sicut a suis Deus.just as God did from his.
Festinemus ergo ingredi in illam requiem:Therefore, let us hasten to enter into that rest,ut ne in idipsum quis incidat incredulitatis exemplum.so that no one may fall into the same example of unbelief.
Vivus est enim sermo Dei,For the Word of God is living and effective:et efficax et penetrabilior omni gladio ancipiti:more piercing than any two-edged sword,et pertingens usque ad divisionem animæ ac spiritus:reaching to the division even between the soul and the spirit, compagum quoque ac medullarum, even between the joints and the marrow,et discretor cogitationum et intentionum cordis.and so it discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Et non est ulla creatura invisibilis in conspectu ejus:And there is no created thing that is invisible to his sight.omnia autem nuda et aperta sunt oculis ejus,For all things are naked and open to the eyes of him,ad quem nobis sermo.about whom we are speaking.
Habentes ergo pontificem magnum qui penetravit cælos,Therefore, since we have a great High Priest, who has pierced the heavens,Jesum Filium Dei,Jesus the Son of God,teneamus confessionem.we should hold to our confession.
Non enim habemus pontificem qui non possit compati infirmitatibus nostris:For we do not have a high priest who is unable to have compassion on our infirmities, tentatum autem per omnia pro similitudine absque peccato.but rather one who was tempted in all things, just as we are, yet without sin.
Adeamus ergo cum fiducia ad thronum gratiæ: ut misericordiam consequamur,Therefore, let us go forth with confidence toward the throne of grace,et gratiam inveniamus in auxilio opportuno.so that we may obtain mercy, and find grace, in a helpful time.
