Capitulum autem super ea quæ dicuntur:Now the main point in the things that have been stated is this:Talem habemus pontificem, that we have so great a High Priest, qui consedit in dextera sedis magnitudinis in cælis, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in the heavens,
sanctorum minister, who is the minister of holy things,et tabernaculi veri, and of the true tabernacle, quod fixit Dominus, which was established by the Lord,et non homo.not by man.
Omnis enim pontifex ad offerendum munera,For every high priest is appointed to offer giftset hostias constituitur:and sacrifices.unde necesse est et hunc habere aliquid,Therefore, quod offerat.it is necessary for him also to have something to offer.
Si ergo esset super terram,And so, if he were upon the earth, nec esset sacerdos:he would not be a priest, cum essent qui offerent secundum legem munera, since there would be others to offer gifts according to the law,
qui exemplari, gifts which serve as mere examples and shadows of the heavenly things.et umbræ deserviunt cælestium. And so it was answered to Moses,Sicut responsum est Moysi, when he was about to complete the tabernacle:cum consummaret tabernaculum:“See to it,”Vide (inquit) omnia facito secundum exemplar,he said, quod tibi ostensum est in monte.“that you make everything according to the example which was revealed to you on the mountain.”
Nunc autem melius sortitus est ministerium,But now he has been granted a better ministry, quanto et melioris testamenti mediator est,so much so that he is also the Mediator of a better testament, quod in melioribus repromissionibus sancitum est.which has been confirmed by better promises.
Nam si illud prius culpa vacasset,For if the former one had been entirely without fault, non utique secundi locus inquireretur.then a place certainly would not have been sought for a subsequent one.
Vituperans enim eos dicit:For, finding fault with them, he says:Ecce dies venient,“Behold, the days shall arrive, dicit Dominus:says the Lord,et consummabo super domum Israël, et super domum Juda, testamentum novum, when I will consummate a New Testament over the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
non secundum testamentum quod feci patribus eorum in die qua apprehendi manum eorum ut educerem illos de terra Ægypti:not according to the testament which I made with their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand, so that I might lead them away from the land of Egypt.quoniam ipsi non permanserunt in testamento meo:For they did not remain in my testament,et ego neglexi eos,and so I disregarded them, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.
Quia hoc est testamentum quod disponam domui Israël post dies illos,For this is the testament which I will set before the house of Israel, after those days, dicit Dominus:says the Lord.dando leges meas in mentem eorum,I will instill my laws in their minds,et in corde eorum superscribam eas:and I will inscribe my laws on their hearts.et ero eis in Deum,And so, I will be their God,et ipsi erunt mihi in populum:and they shall be my people.
et non docebit unusquisque proximum suum,And they will not teach, each one his neighbor,et unusquisque fratrem suum, and each one his brother, dicens:saying:Cognosce Dominum:‘Know the Lord.’quoniam omnes scient me a minore usque ad majorem eorum:For all shall know me, from the least, even to the greatest of them.
quia propitius ero iniquitatibus eorum,For I will forgive their iniquities,et peccatorum eorum jam non memorabor.and I will no longer remember their sins.”
Dicendo autem novum:Now in saying something new, veteravit prius.he has made the former old.Quod autem antiquatur, et senescit, prope interitum est.But that which decays and grows old is close to passing away.
