Hic enim Melchisedech,For this Melchizedek, rex Salem, king of Salem, sacerdos Dei summi, priest of the Most High God,qui obviavit Abrahæ regresso a cæde regum, met Abraham, as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings,et benedixit ei:and blessed him.

cuiAnd Abraham divided to him a tenth part of everything.et decimas omnium divisit Abraham:And in translation his name is first, primum quidem qui interpretatur rex justitiæ:indeed, deinde autemking of justice,et rex Salem, and next also king of Salem, quod est, that is,rex pacis, king of peace.

sine patre,Without father, sine matre, without mother, sine genealogia, without genealogy, neque initium dierum, having neither beginning of days, neque finem vitæ habens, nor end of life, assimilatus autem Filio Dei,he is thereby likened to the Son of God,manet sacerdos in perpetuum.who remains a priest continuously.

Intuemini autem quantus sit hic,Next, cuiconsider how great this man is,et decimas dedit de præcipuis Abraham patriarcha.since the Patriarch Abraham even gave tithes to him from the principal things.

Et quidem de filiis Levi sacerdotium accipientes,And indeed, those who are from the sons of Levi, having received the priesthood, mandatum habent decimas sumere a populo secundum legem, hold a commandment to take tithes from the people in accord with the law,id est, that is,a fratribus suis:from their brothers, quamquam et ipsi exierint de lumbis Abrahæ.even though they also went forth from the loins of Abraham.

Cujus autem generatio non annumeratur in eis,But this man, whose lineage is not enumerated with them, decimas sumpsit ab Abraham, received tithes from Abraham,et hunc, qui habebat repromissiones, benedixit.and he blessed even the one who held the promises.

Sine ulla autem contradictione,Yet this is without any contradiction, quod minus est, a meliore benedicitur.for what is less should be blessed by what is better.

Et hic quidem,And certainly, decimas morientes homines accipiunt:here, men who receive tithes still die;ibi autem contestatur, quia vivit.but there, he bears witness that he lives.

Et (ut ita dictum sit) per Abraham, et Levi,And so it may be said that even Levi, who received tithes, qui decimas accepit, decimatus est:was himself a tithe through Abraham.

adhuc enim in lumbis patris erat,For he was still in the loins of his father, quando obviavit ei Melchisedech.when Melchizedek met him.

Si ergo consummatio per sacerdotium Leviticum erat (populus enim sub ipso legem accepit) quid adhuc necessarium fuit secundum ordinem Melchisedech,Therefore, if consummation had occurred through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), then what further need would there be for another Priest to rise up according to the order of Melchizedek, alium surgere sacerdotem, et non secundum ordinem Aaron dici?one who was not called according to the order of Aaron?

Translato enim sacerdotio,For since the priesthood has been transferred, necesse est ut et legis translatio fiat.it is necessary that the law also be transferred.

In quo enim hæc dicuntur, de alia tribu est,For he about whom these things have been spoken is from another tribe,de qua nullus altari præsto fuit.in which no one attends before the altar.

Manifestum est enim quod ex Juda ortus sit Dominus noster:For it is evident that our Lord arose out of Judah,in qua tribu nihil de sacerdotibus Moyses locutus est.a tribe about which Moses said nothing concerning priests.

Et amplius adhuc manifestum est:And yet it is far more evident that,si secundum similitudinem Melchisedech exsurgat alius sacerdos, according to the likeness of Melchizedek, there rises up another priest,

qui non secundum legem mandati carnalis factus est,who was made, not according to the law of a carnal commandment, sed secundum virtutem vitæ insolubilis.but according to the virtue of an indissoluble life.

Contestatur enim:For he testifies:Quoniam tu es sacerdos in æternum,“You are a priest forever, secundum ordinem Melchisedech.according to the order of Melchizedek.”

Reprobatio quidem fit præcedentis mandati,Certainly, propter infirmitatem ejus, there is a setting aside of the former commandment,et inutilitatem:because of its weakness and lack of usefulness.

nihil enim ad perfectum adduxit lex:For the law led no one to perfection, introductio vero melioris spei, yet truly it introduced a better hope, per quam proximamus ad Deum.through which we draw near to God.

Et quantum est non sine jurejurando (alii quidem sine jurejurando sacerdotes facti sunt,Moreover, it is not without an oath. For certainly, the others were made priests without an oath.

hic autem cum jurejurando per eum,But this man was made a priest with an oath, qui dixit ad illum:by the One who said to him:Juravit Dominus,“The Lord has swornet non pœnitebit eum:and he will not repent.tu es sacerdos in æternum):You are a priest forever.”

in tantum melioris testamenti sponsor factus est Jesus.By so much, Jesus has been made the sponsor of a better testament.

Et alii quidem plures facti sunt sacerdotes,And certainly, so many of the others became priests because, idcirco quod morte prohiberentur permanere:due to death, they were prohibited from continuing.

hic autem eo quod maneat in æternum,But this man, because he continues forever, sempiternum habet sacerdotium.has an everlasting priesthood.

Unde et salvare in perpetuum potest accedentes per semetipsum ad Deum: semper vivens ad interpellandum pro nobis. And for this reason, he is able, continuously, to save those who approach God through him, since he is ever alive to make intercession on our behalf.

Talis enim decebat ut nobis esset pontifex,For it was fitting that we should have such a High Priest:sanctus, holy, innocens, innocent, impollutus, undefiled, segregatus a peccatoribus, set apart from sinners,et excelsior cælis factus:and exalted higher than the heavens.

qui non habet necessitatem quotidie,And he has no need, daily, in the manner of other priests, quemadmodum sacerdotes,to offer sacrifices, prius pro suis delictis hostias offerre, deinde pro populi:first for his own sins, and then for those of the people.hoc enim fecit semel,For he has done this once, seipsum offerendo.by offering himself.

Lex enim homines constituit sacerdotes infirmitatem habentes:For the law appoints men as priests, though they have infirmities.sermo autem jurisjurandi, qui post legem est,But, by the word of the oath that is after the law,Filium in æternum perfectum.the Son has been perfected for eternity.
