Paulus et Timotheus, servi Jesu Christi,Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, omnibus sanctis in Christo Jesu, qui sunt Philippis,to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, cum episcopis et diaconibus.with the bishops and deacons.

Gratia vobis,Grace and peace to you,et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Jesu Christo.from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gratias ago Deo meo in omni memoria vestri,I give thanks to my God, with every remembrance of you,

semper in cunctis orationibus meis pro omnibus vobis, cum gaudio deprecationem faciens, always, in all my prayers, making supplication for all of you with joy,

super communicatione vestra in Evangelio Christi a prima die usque nunc.because of your communion in the Gospel of Christ, from the first day even until now.

Confidens hoc ipsum,I am confident of this very thing:quia qui cœpit in vobis opus bonum, that he who has begun this good work in you will perfect it,perficiet usque in diem Christi Jesu:unto the day of Christ Jesus.

sicut est mihi justum hoc sentire pro omnibus vobis:So then,eo quod habeam vos in corde,it is right for me to feel this way about all of you,et in vinculis meis, because I hold you in my heart,et in defensione, and because,et confirmatione Evangelii,in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the Gospel, socios gaudii mei omnes vos esse.you all are partakers of my joy.

Testis enim mihi est Deus,For God is my witness how, quomodo cupiam omnes vos in visceribus Jesu Christi.within the heart of Jesus Christ, I long for all of you.

Et hoc oro,And this I pray:ut caritas vestra magis ac magis abundet in scientia, that your charity may abound more and more,et in omni sensu:with knowledge and with all understanding,

ut probetis potiora,so that you may be confirmed in what is better,ut sitis sinceri,in order that you may be sincereet sine offensa in diem Christi, and without offense on the day of Christ:

repleti fructu justitiæ per Jesum Christum, filled with the fruit of justice,in gloriamthrough Jesus Christ,et laudem Dei.in the glory and praise of God.

Scire autem vos volo fratres,Now,quia quæ circa me sunt, brothers, magis ad profectum venerunt Evangelii:I want you to know that the things concerning me happened for the advancement of the Gospel,

ita ut vincula mea manifesta fierent in Christo in omni prætorio,in such a way that my chains have become manifest in Christ in every place of judgmentet in ceteris omnibus, and in all other such places.

et plures e fratribus in Domino confidentes vinculis meis,And many from among the brothers in the Lord, becoming confident through my chains, abundantius auderent sine timore verbum Dei loqui.are now much bolder in speaking the Word of God without fear.

Quidam quidemCertainly,et propter invidiamsome do so even because of envy and contention;et contentionem:and others, quidam autemtoo,et propter bonam voluntatem Christum prædicant:do so because of a good will to preach Christ.

quidam ex caritate,Some act out of charity, scientes quoniam in defensionem Evangelii positus sum.knowing that I have been appointed for the defense of the Gospel.

Quidam autem ex contentione Christum annuntiant non sincere,But others, out of contention, announce Christ insincerely, existimantes pressuram se suscitare vinculis meis.claiming that their difficulties lift them up to my chains.

Quid enim? But what does it matter?Dum omni modo sive per occasionem,As long as, by every means, sive per veritatem, whether under pretext or in truthfulness,Christus annuntietur:Christ is announced. And about this,et in hoc gaudeo,I rejoice, and moreover, sed et gaudebo.I will continue to rejoice.

Scio enim quia hoc mihi proveniet ad salutem,For I know that this will bring me to salvation, per vestram orationem, through your prayerset subministrationem Spiritus Jesu Christi, and under the ministration of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

secundum exspectationemby means of my own expectation and hope.et spem meam,For in nothing shall I be confounded.quia in nullo confundar:Instead, sed in omni fiducia sicut semper, with all confidence,et nunc magnificabitur Christus in corpore meo,now just as always, sive per vitam,Christ shall be magnified in my body, sive per mortem.whether by life or by death.

Mihi enim vivere Christus est,For to me, to live is Christ,et mori lucrum.and to die is gain.

Quod si vivere in carne,And while I live in the flesh, hic mihi fructus operis est,for me, there is the fruit of works.et quid eligam ignoro. But I do not know which I would choose.

Coarctor autem e duobus:For I am constrained between the two:desiderium habens dissolvi, having a desire to be dissolvedet esse cum Christo, and to be with Christ, multo magis melius:which is the far better thing,

permanere autem in carne, necessarium propter vos.but then to remain in the flesh is necessary for your sake.

Et hoc confidens scio quia manebo,And having this confidence,et permanebo omnibus vobis ad profectum vestrum,I know that I shall remain and that I shall continue to remain with all of you,et gaudium fidei:for your advancement and for your joy in the faith,

ut gratulatio vestra abundet in Christo Jesu in me,so that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus for me,per meum adventum iterum ad vos.through my return to you again.

Tantum digne Evangelio Christi conversamini:Only let your behavior be worthy of the Gospel of Christ,ut sive cum venero, et videro vos,so that, whether I return and see you, sive absens audiam de vobis,or whether, being absent, I hear about you, quia statis in uno spiritu unanimes, still you may stand firm with one spirit, with one mind, collaborantes fidei Evangelii:laboring together for the faith of the Gospel.

et in nullo terreamini ab adversariis:And in nothing be terrified by the adversaries.quæ illis est causa perditionis,For what is to them an occasion of perdition, vobis autem salutis,is to you an occasion of salvation,et hoc a Deo:and this is from God.

quia vobis donatum est pro Christo,For this has been given to you on behalf of Christ, non solum ut in eum credatis, not only so that you may believe in him,sed ut etiam pro illo patiamini:but even so that you may suffer with him,

idem certamen habentes, engaging in the same struggle, quale et vidistis in me,of a kind which you also have seen in me,et nunc audistis de me.and which you now have heard from me.
