Dico ergo:Therefore, I say:Numquid Deus repulit populum suum?Has God driven away his people? Let it not be so!Absit. For I,Nam et ego Israëlita sum ex semine Abraham, too, am an Israelite of the offspring of Abraham,de tribu Benjamin:from the tribe of Benjamin.
non repulit Deus plebem suam,God has not driven away his people, quam præscivit.whom he foreknew. An nescitis in Elia quid dicit Scriptura? And do you not know what Scripture says in Elijah, quemadmodum interpellat Deum adversum Israël:how he calls upon God against Israel?
Domine,“Lord, prophetas tuos occiderunt, they have slain your Prophets.altaria tua suffoderunt:They have overturned your altars.et ego relictus sum solus,And I alone remain,et quærunt animam meam.and they are seeking my life.”
Sed quid dicit illi divinum responsum? But what is the Divine response to him?Reliqui mihi septem millia virorum,“I have retained for myself seven thousand men,qui non curvaverunt genua ante Baal.who have not bent their knees before Baal.”
Sic ergo et in hoc tempore reliquiæ secundum electionem gratiæ salvæ factæ sunt. Therefore, in the same way, again in this time, there is a remnant that has been saved in accord with the choice of grace.
Si autem gratia,And if it is by grace, jam non ex operibus:then it is not now by works;alioquin gratia jam non est gratia.otherwise grace is no longer free.
Quid ergo? What is next?Quod quærebat Israël,What Israel was seeking, hoc non est consecutus:he has not obtained.electio autem consecuta est:But the elect have obtained it. And truly, ceteri vero excæcati sunt:these others have been blinded,
sicut scriptum est:just as it was written:Dedit illis Deus spiritum compunctionis:“God has given them a spirit of reluctance:oculos ut non videant, eyes that do not perceive,et aures ut non audiant, and ears that do not hear, usque in hodiernum diem.even until this very day.”
Et David dicit:And David says:Fiat mensa eorum in laqueum,“Let their table become like a snare,et in captionem,and a deception,et in scandalum,and a scandal,et in retributionem illis.and a retribution for them.
Obscurentur oculi eorum ne videant:Let their eyes be obscured, so that they may not see,et dorsum eorum semper incurva.and so that they may bow down their backs always.”
Dico ergo:Therefore, I say:Numquid sic offenderunt ut caderent? Absit.Have they stumbled in such a way that they should fall? Let it not be so!Sed illorum delicto,Instead, by their offense, salus est gentibus ut illos æmulentur.salvation is with the Gentiles, so that they may be a rival to them.
Quod si delictum illorum divitiæ sunt mundi,Now if their offense is the riches of the world,et diminutio eorum divitiæ gentium:and if their diminution is the riches of the Gentiles, quanto magis plenitudo eorum?how much more is their fullness?
Vobis enim dico gentibus:For I say to you Gentiles:Quamdiu quidem ego sum gentium Apostolus,Certainly, as long as I am an Apostle to the Gentiles, ministerium meum honorificabo,I will honor my ministry,
si quomodo ad æmulandum provocem carnem meam,in such a way that I might provoke to rivalry those who are my own flesh,et salvos faciam aliquos ex illis.and so that I may save some of them.
Si enim amissio eorum, reconciliatio est mundi:For if their loss is for the reconciliation of the world,quæ assumptio, nisi vita ex mortuis?what could their return be for, except life out of death?
Quod si delibatio sancta est,For if the first-fruit has been sanctified,et massa:so also has the whole.et si radix sancta,And if the root is holy,et rami.so also are the branches.
Quod si aliqui ex ramis fracti sunt,And if some of the branches are broken,tu autem cum oleaster esses, and if you, insertus es in illis, being a wild olive branch,et socius radicis, are grafted on to them,et pinguedinis olivæ factus es,and you become a partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree,
noli gloriari adversus ramos.do not glorify yourself above the branches.Quod si gloriaris:For though you glory, non tu radicem portas, you do not support the root, sed radix te.but the root supports you.
Dices ergo:Therefore, you would say:Fracti sunt rami ut ego inserar. The branches were broken off, so that I might be grafted on.
Bene:Well enough.propter incredulitatem fracti sunt. They were broken off because of unbelief.Tu autem fide stas:But you stand on faith.noli altum sapere,So do not choose to savor what is exalted, sed time.but instead be afraid.
Si enim Deus naturalibus ramis non pepercit:For if God has not spared the natural branches,ne forte nec tibi parcat.perhaps also he might not spare you.
Vide ergo bonitatem, et severitatem Dei:So then, notice the goodness and the severity of God.in eos quidem qui ceciderunt,Certainly, toward those who have fallen, severitatem:there is severity;in te autem bonitatem Dei,but toward you, there is the goodness of God,si permanseris in bonitate,if you remain in goodness. Otherwise, alioquin et tu excideris.you also will be cut off.
Sed et illi,Moreover,si non permanserint in incredulitate,if they do not remain in unbelief, inserentur:they will be grafted on.potens est enim Deus iterum inserere illos. For God is able to graft them on again.
Nam si tu ex naturali excisus es oleastro,So if you have been cut off from the wild olive tree, which is natural to you,et contra naturam insertus es in bonam olivam:and, contrary to nature, you are grafted on to the good olive tree, quanto magis ii qui secundum naturam inserentur suæ olivæ?how much more shall those who are the natural branches be grafted on to their own olive tree?
Nolo enim vos ignorare, fratres,For I do not want you to be ignorant, mysterium hoc (ut non sitis vobis ipsis sapientes), quia cæcitas ex parte contigit in Israël,brothers, of this mystery (lest you seem wise only to yourselves) that a certain blindness has occurred in Israel, donec plenitudo gentium intraret, until the fullness of the Gentiles has arrived.
et sic omnis Israël salvus fieret,And in this way, sicut scriptum est:all of Israel may be saved,Veniet ex Sion, just as it was written:qui eripiat,“From Zion shall arrive he who delivers,et avertat impietatem a Jacob.and he shall turn impiety away from Jacob.
Et hoc illis a me testamentum:And this will be my covenant for them, cum abstulero peccata eorum.when I will take away their sins.”
Secundum Evangelium quidem,Certainly, according to the Gospel, inimici propter vos:they are enemies for your sake.secundum electionem autem, carissimi propter patres. But according to the election, they are most beloved for the sake of the fathers.
Sine pœnitentia enim sunt dona et vocatio Dei.For the gifts and the call of God are without regret.
Sicut enim aliquando et vos non credidistis Deo,And just as you also, in times past, nunc autem misericordiam consecuti estis propter incredulitatem illorum:did not believe in God, but now you have obtained mercy because of their unbelief,
ita et isti nunc non crediderunt in vestram misericordiam:so also have these now not believed, for your mercy,ut et ipsi misericordiam consequantur.so that they might obtain mercy also.
Conclusit enim Deus omnia in incredulitate,For God has enclosed everyone in unbelief,ut omnium misereatur.so that he may have mercy on everyone.
O altitudo divitiarum sapientiæ,Oh,et scientiæ Dei:the depths of the richness of the wisdom and knowledge of God!quam incomprehensibilia sunt judicia ejus,How incomprehensible are his judgments,et investigabiles viæ ejus!and how unsearchable are his ways!
Quis enim cognovit sensum Domini? For who has known the mind of the Lord?aut quis consiliarius ejus fuit?Or who has been his counselor?
aut quis prior dedit illi,Or who first gave to him,et retribuetur ei?so that repayment would be owed?
Quoniam ex ipso,For from him,et per ipsum, and through him,et in ipso sunt omnia:and in him are all things.ipsi gloria in sæcula. To him is glory, for all eternity.Amen.Amen.
