Obsecro itaque vos fratres per misericordiam Dei,And so, I beg you, brothers,ut exhibeatis corpora vestra hostiam viventem,by the mercy of God, that you offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,sanctam, Deo placentem,holy and pleasing to God,rationabile obsequium vestrum.with the subservience of your mind.
Et nolite conformari huic sæculo,And do not choose to be conformed to this age,sed reformamini in novitate sensus vestri:but instead choose to be reformed in the newness of your mind,ut probetis quæ sit voluntas Dei bona,so that you may demonstrate what is the will of God: what is good,et beneplacens,and what is well-pleasing,et perfecta.and what is perfect.
Dico enim per gratiam quæ data est mihi,For I say,omnibus qui sunt inter vos,through the grace that has been given to me,non plus sapere quam oportet sapere,to all who are among you:sed sapere ad sobrietatem:Taste no more than it is necessary to taste,et unicuique sicut Deus divisit mensuram fidei.but taste unto sobriety and just as God has distributed a share of the faith to each one.
Sicut enim in uno corpore multa membra habemus,For just as, within one body, we have many parts,omnia autem membra non eumdem actum habent:though all the parts do not have the same role,
ita multi unum corpus sumus in Christo,so also we, being many, are one body in Christ,singuli autem alter alterius membra.and each one is a part, the one of the other.
Habentes autem donationes secundum gratiam,And we each have different gifts,quæ data est nobis,according to the grace that has been given to us:differentes:whether prophecy,sive prophetiam secundum rationem fidei,in agreement with the reasonableness of faith;
sive ministerium in ministrando,or ministry, in ministering;sive qui docet in doctrina,or he who teaches, in doctrine;
qui exhortatur in exhortando,he who exhorts, in exhortation;qui tribuit in simplicitate,he who gives, in simplicity;qui præest in sollicitudine,he who governs, in solicitude;qui miseretur in hilaritate.he who shows mercy, in cheerfulness.
Dilectio sine simulatione:Let love be without falseness:odientes malum,hating evil,adhærentes bono:clinging to what is good,
caritate fraternitatis invicem diligentes:loving one another with fraternal charity,honore invicem prævenientes:surpassing one another in honor:
sollicitudine non pigri:in solicitude, not lazy;spiritu ferventes:in spirit, fervent;Domino servientes:serving the Lord;
spe gaudentes:in hope, rejoicing;in tribulatione patientes:in tribulation, enduring;orationi instantes:in prayer, ever-willing;
necessitatibus sanctorum communicantes:in the difficulties of the saints, sharing;hospitalitatem sectantes.in hospitality, attentive.
Benedicite persequentibus vos:Bless those who are persecuting you:benedicite,bless,et nolite maledicere.and do not curse.
Gaudere cum gaudentibus,Rejoice with those who are rejoicing.flere cum flentibus:Weep with those who are weeping.
idipsum invicem sentientes:Be of the same mind toward one another:non alta sapientes,not savoring what is exalted,sed humilibus consentientes.but consenting in humility.Nolite esse prudentes apud vosmetipsos:Do not choose to seem wise to yourself.
nulli malum pro malo reddentes:Render to no one harm for harm.providentes bona non tantum coram Deo,Provide good things, not only in the sight of God,sed etiam coram omnibus hominibus.but also in the sight of all men.
Si fieri potest,If it is possible,quod ex vobis est,in so far as you are able,cum omnibus hominibus pacem habentes:be at peace with all men.
non vosmetipsos defendentes carissimi,Do not defend yourselves, dearest ones. Instead,sed date locum iræ.step aside from wrath.Scriptum est enim:For it is written:Mihi vindicta:“Vengeance is mine.ego retribuam, dicit Dominus.I shall give retribution, says the Lord.”
Sed si esurierit inimicus tuus,So if an enemy is hungry,ciba illum:feed him;si sitit,if he is thirsty,potum da illi:give him a drink.hoc enim faciens,For in doing so,carbones ignis congeres super caput ejus.you will heap burning coals upon his head.
Noli vinci a malo,Do not allow evil to prevail,sed vince in bono malum.instead prevail over evil by means of goodness.
